Anybody out in the Northern burbs gonna check out the Bears game at Tiny's 'event' at Chammps Americana in Skokie?

I love watching the Bears kick the living fuck out of the Saints. It's been an annual tradition since I couldn't answer a fuckin' trivia question about their playoff history. :?

Trivia question: In January 1989, during one of the coldest games in NFC Championship game history, which prohibitive home favorite not only got their asses kicked by 25, which said ass-kicking also led to the demise of a true Chicago iconic, bs hero (skids greased by a stint as 'Aints coach   )?

I know it's reaching, but...

I know not of what you speak my friend. That date inparticular was wiped from my memory. :)

Gibbs and Walsh owned Ditka in big games.

Not quite. January of 1989 would have been a loss to the 49ers, at Soldier Field, in the NFC title game. We had beaten the Eagles, in the fog bowl, to get there. Regular Reader was right. It was cold. I was at that game.

Bears lost to the Redskins in the divisional round in January of 1987 and 1988. Both losses were at Soldier Field.

This is close enough to be a possibility. On the other hand, I have zero desire to see Harry in a bar again.

Beardown, I knew it was the Niners. I elect to forget that game.

Didn't I say that (Bill) Walsh owned Ditka in big games?

And I believe the years immediately after the Super Bowl Gibbs did the Bears in.

'86 was Darrell Green's return for a TD I believe... and Flutie Flakes at QB. Redskins win

'87 saw Payton miss a key first down by inches, and he cried on the bench afterwards after losing... to the Redskins.

'88 was Walsh's Niners coming in BEAR WEATHER and beating the fuck out of the beloved.

'89 Ditka predicted the Bears wouldn't win another game after getting blown out by (you guessed it) Washington - and he threw Donnell Woolford under the bus saying he couldn't cover anybody. Coach was right. The Bears lost the rest of their games and missed the playoffs.

'90 they made the playoffs - beat the Saints and went out to NY and got destroyed by the Giants.

'91 lost to the Niners 52-14 - while Wayne Fontes chomped on a cigar. I was at the Admiral Theater - making the most of a bad Bears game. Dallas beat the Bears in the playoffs. Waddle played a good game. Nobody else did, as Dick Hantak oversaw things. It was the passing of the torch... the Bears were toast - the Cowboys were back - in a major way.

'92 buh bye Ditka. His farewell speech:

"I'll try to do this with class, I don't know if I can...Scripture tells you that all things shall pass. This too, shall pass. Regrets? Just a few, but too few to remember. I can't sing it quite as good as he could (referring to Frank Sinatra). Thirty two years, and I have a lot of people to thank. I have a lot of coaches that I worked for over the years as a player, as an assistant coach. Of course I have to thank Coach Halas. I guess you've got to thank the players most because they make it happen. I was blessed. I came here and I inherited a hell of a football team. Man, you've got Walter Payton, you've got a hell of a football team. We drafted some good kids, we took a run. Pretty good...we did a pretty good job. Players make it happen. Had some great assistant coaches and respect every one of them. I really loved every one I've ever had. Disagreements or no disagreements, they've been very vital in my life. I've had my run-ins with you guys (referring to the media) and I've had a lot of support from you. I appreciate it and I thank you. I thank the fans of this city." "You know, the Bears will come back. Mike Ditka will survive. I will land on my feet. There's no problem about that. I don't worry about that. I worry about how this organization is perceived. I believe it will go forward and try to do the things necessary to make the adjustments to get through the '90s the way it should. I would hope that." "It's pretty hard to erase 17 years. Not much else I can say but thank you, I appreciate it and this, too, shall pass."

Does anyone remember when Giangreco was on Channel 5 and after Ditka was fired he kept a picture of him in the background of every story (whatever they call the over the shoulder headline picture) he did for the next few weeks, even if the story had nothing to do with Ditka or the Bears?

Oh yeah. You did say "Gibbs and Walsh", Grid. I just caught the Gibbs part. Sorry.

Three straight playoffs after the Super Bowl. Bounced 3 times at Soldier Field. Amazing.

Especially the 1986 Bears. That was a great team. They were 14-2. Maybe a better regular season team than the 1985 Bears. Defense was better. They set the record for fewest points in a season. Later broken by the Ravens.

Flutie started that fuckin' playoff game. Should have been Tomzack. Sucks that Jimmy Mac couldn't stay healthy. I also remember Darell Green returning a punt for a TD, with broken ribs, in that game.

Personally, the Flutie loss to the Skins stung more than the Niners NFC Championship Game loss.

I kind of felt the Bears 'jobbed' the Iggles and were fortunate to be in the NFC Championship Game. I thought after they won the Super Bowl, they'd rattle off a couple more in the subsequent years. Joe Gibbs didn't think so. Maybe that's why I hate the Redskins so much.

I vividly remember being wasted at Fat Sams at 159th/45 watching that Skins/Bears game. VEEEEEERY bummed out.

Oddly enough the Redskins with their signing of Wilber Marshall had me burn my Bears' fan card.

People (although not Grid) often forget that the Bears went 14-2 in the 1986 season and statisticaly were better defensively under Vince Tobin then they were the year they won Super Bowl XX.

I agree that the playoff game after the 1986 season with the Skins may be the biggest disappointment of the Ditka era. Of course on the field only. Gum throwing, DUI, and yelling at Red Motlow do not count. :D

It was a game vs Saints that, in my mind, started the demise of the Jauron era.

Was that the punt off the facemask of Leon Johnson game.

Its a tragedy the Bears did not win another Super Bowl. Could you imagine the '92 Bulls losing to the Knicks or Cavs in round 2?

It was an abberration for Leon to have a game like that! He was blinded by the sun! He couldn't see the ball! He ran out of gas! He had a flat tire! He didn't have enough money for a cab! His shoulder pads didn't come back from the cleaners! An old friend came in from out of town! Someone stole his car! There was an earthquake! A terrible flood. Locusts! IT WASN'T HIS FAULT!

Screw it... I opted to buy a poker table instead of pissing away a few dozen sheckels in Skokie. I'm watching the game from the cozy confines of the GRID Cave.

Sorry Grid, would have loved to meet you and watch the
game but a trip down from Wisconsin would have been a
bit much. Go Bears
