Dont rule out the possibility that Hendry has already gotten a deal worked out with Baltimore for Roberts, as well. He might deal Marshall, Cedeno and a prospect to the Orioles for Roberts. Maybe he is clearing a spot for Roberts in the lineup with this deal? Then we get the leadoff hitter we need too.

So, do you believe they just plan on using Fontenot at 2nd then, if they deal DeRosa? I really doubt thats the plan. Another possibility, is moving Theriot to 2nd and aquiring Furcal or Cabrerra to play short. Furcal would also solve the leadoff issue.

I dunno, Steve - Fontenot has shown us somethin when he's been given a chance - Are you a "little Babe Ruth" hater? The guy's still a bargain, and they can spend money elsewhere, like payin some team to take Soriano off our hands

Maybe I'll regret this later but the kind of thinking like "Fontenot's earned a chance" is to blame, at least partially, of the Cubs failure. It's the setimental attachments. Screw it, man, let's build the best team we can, and don't worry about any of these feelings or who's earned what at this point. 2008, despite Steve's passionate claims, was a failure with nearly every member of this team having a miserable playoff run. DeRosa flopped around game two like a hooked marlin. No one but Lee could hit the ball, and in his case I'm not sure his eyes were open.

I am shocked at all of the hand wringing over the possible dissmissal of a 34 year old 2b/utility player who is coming off his best year and is almost certain to be headed for a statistical decline next year. And on top of it is plays a below average 2b defensively and is a borderline butcher in the outfield. This guy is untradable? Please.....

Who, last year, was a sentimental attachment that caused Cubs failure? Nobody in the everyday starting line-up was there because of sentimental reasons. They even trotted Edmonds out there when everybody hated him. Lee, Soriano, A-Ram, Derosa, and Blanco all deserved to be out there. Fukudome didn't, but that was an economic screw-up and not a sentimental one. Theriot I guess could be a maybe but he hit .307. The pitching staff had 2 sentimental choices. Wood closing and Dempster starting and both of them were great. I don't see how sentimentality had anything to do with us losing last year.

Well at least this wont linger on all offseason like the Roberts fiasco. It scares me that the direction people have hinted at for the Cubs is Randy Johnson but if you can sign him to a one year deal I guess you roll the dice. My number one priority if I am Hendry is getting Abreu now. As a Cubs fan I just pray that they do not make a huge mistake and go after the headcase Bradley.

None. You're missing my point.
2008's team was a failure to me. Yes, they won a lot of games but totally bellyflopped in the playoffs for the second straight year.
To me, no one on this team is untradeable. Because they were almost all responsible for the second straight playoff sweep.

Phil you speak the truth. Ryan Theriot should play 2b and they should get a SS that can go deep in the hole (giggity)

DeRosa's trade value is high now thanks to an awful Fukudome. that bastard is killing this team otherwise.

Looks like a deal will get done before the end of the week but I don't really like this move. I think the Cubs are giving up too much for a guy that had recent arm problems and has terrible mechanics from everything I've read. Do the Cubs really need 4 guys in their rotation that have had arm problems? Looks like 2004 all over again. The Cubs would be better off going after Roberts.

Yep best poster of the year!

I completely hear ya, Darkside, but it's not for sentimental value that I wanna keep guys around like Fontenot (and I know you're referring more namely to DeRo), I just want some ass-kickers in there to do the job when the game's on the line. Furthermore, I kind-of worry about Lou constantly fuckin' with a lineup if there's more than one or two guys (see the first half of his first-time go-around), saying that he needs "to tweak it until he finds the right mix"

CNNSI is reporting a possible Marquis trade to the Mets. Will this open up talks again, once that salary is gone?

God I hope not. Let it be done. Trade for Roberts or offer Furcal and Abreu some money and leave the rotation the hell alone.

Hold on.... I thought the WHITE SOX WERE CHEAP, and they were dumping salary.

The Cubs are on the cusp of the World Series and they don't want to package a bunch of fringe players and prospects to get Jake Peavy?

CHEAP!!!!!

More like prudent, than cheap. Peavy's ERA away from Petco park is nothing special and he's had 2 stints on the DL the past 2 seasons. I want Roberts or Furcal and either Abreau or Ibanez. The rotation is fine. If they can do these things and still want to get Peavy-okay, as long as they don't give up too much. The Padres should not get Harden, Cedeno and DeRosa for him. Thats too much to give up. Even though Harden usually only goes 5-6 innings, he generally gives his team a good game and a chance to win, wherever he pitches. Peavy's numbers on the road are MUCH worse than at Petco. I'm not sure he would be a great pitcher if half his starts are at Wrigley Field.

Abreau... ya, that's what the Cubs need.

How much money do they need to invest in right fielders?

They've already got the swinging bunter manning right field.
