The Cubs lost Lefthander Donnie Veal to the Pirates in a rule 5 draft, as they left him unprotected. Veal was a top prospect, who had been favorably compared to Dontrell Willis. But like Willis, he had some problems with control. If the pirates can solve Veal's control problems, this may be something that the Cubs look back at with great regret. At the same time, the Cubs did get David Patton from the Reds for Cash, after the Reds selected him in the rule 5 draft, from the Colorado Rockies. Patton has a mid 90's fastball as well as a slider and changeup. I'll be curious to see if Veal is on the Pirates opening day roster. The guy has a great arm.

The butt-pirates need all the help they can get, not that I'd want to help a division rival...

Cubs and black pitchers don't mix....I call it the curse of Lee Smith ever since he left.

The pride of Evanston......but I'm referring to pitchers that pitched good to great over an extended period of time for the cubbies....the last to do it was Lee Smith....

So Veal won't be part of the Peavy deal??

I have a feeling the cubs will get him back sometime during the season. No way he lasts the season in that atrocious Pirate bullpen.

I predict... Veal will be the Pirates #3 starter to open the season.

I hope you are right. If he does not stay on the major league roster for the entire season, the Cubs can buy him back for just $25,000. Half of what the Pirates had to pay to claim him. The experience he may get at the major league with the Pirates, might be of some benefeit too. But why you believe he will pitch out of the bullpen, rather than starting, is one thing that puzzles me.....

heres my take on donnie veal:

over - rated. you think they left him unprotected by accident? the guy has been getting his ass kicked for 2 years at AA tennessee. you read some of these crazy trade rumors and they talk like donnie veal is some kind of untouchable, untradeable force that the rest of the league is dying to get. walking guys like crazy, giving up tons of hits. this guy is LIGHT YEARS away from being successful in the big leagues, let alone being a successful number 3 starter for the pirates next year.

hey, im not a statistics guy, but just for the hell of it, i looked his up. he has been getting WORKED OVER in AA for 2 years. my absolute FAVORITE stat is his 18 wild pitches last year! EIGHTEEN!

yeah, i know, he is young, he has a good arm, whatever. get some guys out.

MOFO-you are right about what he's produced the past 2 years. But it's that arm of his that had MANY teams after him last offseason. Baltimore insisted that he be included in any deal for Brian Roberts last year. But he had even more control problems in 2008 than in 2007. I guess the Cubs decided that those problems were not getting solved, so they were willing to risk losing him. But if the Pirates can solve his control issues, you will see why so many teams coveted him.

It had a lot to do with the fact the GM said he'd be used as a reliever......

Quote:
Neal Huntington just spoke after the draft, and here are highlights: He acknowledged talks with Vazquez and "other free agents" but echoed that they are not complete. ... Veal was one of three names the Pirates had on their list, and they were "surprised" he fell to fourth. ... Veal will be a reliever in spring training, and it is no lock that he will be kept on the roster. He has to show better control, and the team's pitching coach and minor league pitching coordinator will work closely with him. "It speaks to our faith in Joe Kerrigan and Troy Buckley in what we can be able to do in spring training," Huntington said. "If it works, we'll have a very interesting left-hander. If not, nothing ventured, nothing gained." ... Asked if the lack of control was a concern, Huntington said: "Absolutely. That's why he's on a triple-A roster. He had a hard time throwing the ball over the plate. A year ago, this was one of the better left-handed prospects in the game. He went through some adversity this year, and we feel that influenced his performance. We do feel there's arm strength and a breaking ball." ... The Pirates clocked Veal's fastball at 95 mph in the past, but just 88-93 this past season. ...

Fair enough. He has always been a starter with the Cubs minor league teams, so thats a bit of a surprise. Then again, Marmol (a catcher even before pitching) and Samardzija were starters in the minors as well. I guess it shouldn't be too much of a shock. Thanks for bringing that pertinent info to the thread. I had not seen that before.

I think everyone worthwhile in the minors is a starter, regardless of how they're projected.

Veal is fucking awesome. Especially if you make it with eggplant and some clams in a white wine sauce. Yummy stuff.
