The White Sox have the inside track on free agent outfielder Bobby Abreu, according to the New York Daily News.

The Chi Sox would likely want to move Jermaine Dye first and have been in talks with the Reds to do just that. Abreu, 34, batted .296/.371/.471 last season with 20 home runs and 100 RBI. He also stole 22 bases. It's going to take at least a three-year deal to ink him.

Hmmmmm. This is hard one to figure. Dye and Abreu are the same age and it will cost more than the 2yr/$23.5mil Dye is currently owed to sign Abreu. Abreu is left-handed and has more speed but isn't an upgrade defensively. I like the fact that it shows they want to win in '09 but I would rather have Dye over Abreu.

Abreu has a better OBP--More Speed,better Defensively,and most important is Ozzie's Guy.

According to the fielding bible Bobby Abreu was the 2nd worst RF with a -24. Dye was a -6.

The fielding bible? Is that the King Mays version?

From a purely fan standpoint I really hope they keep Dye as he's my favorite Sox player but if they can get Abreu AND deal Dye for help in other needed areas I'd be fine with that. I would like to see Dye end his career with the Sox though.

I wouldn't hate this move, but would prefer a younger OF, if they do dip into free agency and trade Dye.

I don't like it. I think Dye is a fan favorite and all around good guy. If I'm going to move him, its got to be a clear upgrade, which I don't think this is. If any money is spent in the OF it has to be in CF.

Don't believe they are going to spend the bucks for Abreau. It would be counter-productive in terms of the plan they seem to have in place. By the time all the young players are in their prime and ready to contend, Abreau will be an older player, too well past his prime to contribute at a high level. If Kenny is going to sign a free agent, it's more likely to be a younger one. I also agree about Dye. At this point, he may not run as well, but he's the more dangerous hitter. He's one of the most underrated hitters in baseball. Abreau has a great eye and draws a lot of walks, but he does not have the power Dye has. Plus, he is a below average fielder. I really doubt this will happen. Abreau would be a better fit on a team ready to contend immediately.

There's no truth to the Bobby Abreu rumors involving the White Sox, and I doubt the Southsiders will spend the $$$$ to land the rightfielder who didn't get arbitration by the Yankees.

Hey SHARK - get to work on this rumour:

Zambrano to the Sox as part of a 4-teamer that gets Peavy to the Cubs.

I think the Sun-Times just threw that one in today to see if anyone is still paying attention.

Fat chance, Spanky...The Jake Peavy to the Cubs deal died some 8 hours ago... :(

Cleveland, probably not.

Detroit has serious pitching issues, and while I doubt they will lose 90 games again, they won't be in the playoffs either.

Maybe but he can still be a productive hitter for 3-4 more years. The sooner he moves to DH the better.
