and recently my friend was telling me both howard and artie were talking with lorne michaels about being on the show; howard was asked to be host, and he said he'd only host if he got to make fun of the bad writing of the show in his intro, and lorne told him no and i guess got an attitude about it.

but seriously, outside of weekend update, that sketch comedy writing is the worst i've ever seen. i've seen 19 year old half retarded second city sluts write better drivel than this shit.

This was a bad episode but some of the ones before xmas were funny. That Bobby Monighan guy has the best expressions, just him working the tuba during the digital short made me crack up. His snagglepuss is better than the orginal which has been mentioned here but i had to give it a plus one.

If it is what I heard, Howard was talking about when he did that about 10 years ago and settled on just going on Update to talk about what is wrong with SNL since Lorne wouldn't let Fred and Jackie write all the skits that Howard was in.

Artie also told a story about how Lorne asked him to interview and told him pretty quickly that there was no way he could be on SNL because he was known and Lorne realized it doesn't work if "known" people join the cast (Artie had been on MadTV for 2 years at that point) - that he's never had success with that, McKean, Garofalo. He then asked him why he did MadTV to which Artie basically replied "because it paid my bills, motherf@cker - like I'm going to turn down a network gig". Lorne told him he shouldn't have done it. When Artie asked why he even brought him here, Lorne told him he wanted Artie in the Molly Shannon movie. Norm told Artie that Lorne was fucking with him and that Lorne likes to do that.

was there something mentioned about a falling out between norm and lorne too? for some reason i'm thinking norm walked out on his opening speech when he hosted?

i hate second hand information...damn i miss listening to the show.

I seem to recall Norm getting fired from SNL. I want to say that he went into his TV show at the time and it was doing decently, and maybe he had a movie out at the time too, so SNL asked him to come back and host.

I don't recall the details, but sort of remember Norm being pretty brutal towards SNL, Lorne, & NBC during his monologue. I don't think he walked out though.

when did SNL change it's format to "Not So Prime Time" Drama? That Fill Werrell guy is sooooo serious untalented, Church Ladyboy and Lamb Shark and the Ignorant Slum segments are so gripping that they should have a special section on the Grammy's to reward such stark looks at reality!

Did you get a chance to gander at 'Mean Girls' by Fina Tey? If you were to think about her directional vision(which is difficult for today's medicated populus), you would see more than a half dozen concepts, camera shots/angles precisely the way a man named Michael Lehman used in another high school romp called 'Heathers' employed in 1989. Plagurism is the sincerest way to coattail dollars and take all the credit!

I remember a lot of that monologue. The punchline was (I quote from memory): "Just a few months ago I got fired for not being funny. Now they're inviting me back, not just to be on the show, but to host the show. Now I couldn't have gotten that much funnier in the months I was gone, and then I realized- they've just gotten horribly unfunny. Why else would they invite me back?"

He had some pretty sharp comments on Letterman after the firing too.

The Letterman appearance was one of the funniest "Late Nite" interviews I ever saw. Norm told a story about a vacation he took at a cabin where he though the old man who owned the place wanted to rape him. If I can find the link, I'll post it...

Old Harold Delaney! It wasn't on youtube for the longest time (years and years), then it went on about three months ago. It's probably been taken off by now. The story of him playing scrabble with the guy is absolutely priceless. I remember watching that the night it happened (sheesh, I think I was in the 6th grade) and was absolutely crying I was laughing so hard.

Somewhere on Youtube there's a three part interview with Norm and Conan O'Brien from back in the Andy Richter days. It starts slowly but you have to see the whole thing. The first two parts are just Norm, and he's completely high from (at least) cold medication. The third part, they bring on one of the chicks from Melrose Place and the wife from the Jim Belushi show (not that the time), who was promoting the Carrot Top movie Chairman of the Board. Norm pretty much took the interview over.

I always like MacDonald's head in a duffel bag routine. I hadn't seen him before and it was so bizarre and hilarious to me since he looked so normal the delivery was perfect - one of my favorites.

I haven't seen it in about 15 years. I tried looking for it online once but couldn't find it.

I beleve Norm was fired because he refused to stop the OJ jokes during Weekend Update. I'm pretty sure it wasn't Lorne who fired him. The edict came from Don Olmeyer who at the time was president of NBC, and also happened to be a good buddy of OJ's.

I've heard that rumor as well. Olmeyer insisted that ratings went down for Weekend Update with Norm, which was unprecedented. He never really produced actual numbers though.

Howard Stern once said that Norm MacDonald simply wasn't funny...Norm's imitation of Bob Dole on "Saturday Night Live" was like nails on a chalkboard...Irritating & annoying!
