If foo fighters and nirvana were a band at the same time, i may agree with you more. but, they weren't. so, comparing songs that were written 3-14 years after Kurt, uh...stopped writing music, isn't really a fair comparison imo.
Dave had the experience of Nirvana to shape his writing. Would Kurt still be playing Nirvana-esque grunge-pop songs in his 40s?

There are a lot of knuckleheaded things that get posted here, so I take what everyone writes literally instead of trying to sift through the obvious and sarcastic. When there were 20 posters, it was easier to figure that out.

Dave does write more funny upbeat songs. There are very few current creative rock drummers imo, but to each his own. I can think of one.

Valid point. Doesn't change my opinion, though. I actually didn't have a favorable opinion of Nirvana until recently. Now I dig a lot of what they did. Simple yet very effective.



Dave totally cited Kurt as a huge song writing influence.

I think the "death" of grunge would have been Kurt's undoing and he probably would have became depressed and insulted by the industry that exalted him (much to his chagrin at the time) turning it's back on him. The end result would have probably been the same.

Band components: singer, guitar player, bass player, and a machine or "brain".
We call him D.A.V.E. (digital audio video excellence).

Was a huge Nirvana fan in the EARLY Seattle movement back in the 90's and then became a huge Pearl Jam fan THANKS TO MTV (when it was good and showed videos.) I still feel Pearl Jam was a better all around band because of Vedder and his voice.I don't think Cobain was as talented as Eddie or could of lasted as long as PJ DID.

I thought some of Eddie's best work was with Temple of the Dog.Just a great album and the song Hunger Strike was a great Summer song back in 92'. Chris Cornell and Eddie together , no two better voices in rock.

What's the drummer's name?

Have you ever seen Takabite? Mac knows Johnny V from that band. They play mostly Indiana shows. Anyway, their drummer Maggie is amazing. She's probably the best "local" drummer I've seen. The guy in the Tool cover band Aenima is pretty awesome.



I'm seeing a friend's band that night, but I'll try and squeeze it in. Anything else on the horizon if I can't? I love live music.

How does the crowd react to not having a drummer? Do you sing the vocals on the posted songs? Sounds dark and tribal. If that's your machine on those recordings, the drums are programmed very well.

That's interesting, I think most people/fans would say one of the first things that drew them to Nirvana was Kurt's voice. The raw emotion was, at points, moving. There was definitely "something" there. I was a fan of both bands in the early 90's, but I always took Eddie's voice and demeanor as more of an act/schtick.

Step 1: mumble
Step 2: scream
step 3: run across stage
step 4: climb something

repeat as needed.

It always seemed like Eddie was the front man that the rest of the band needed in order to do what they did (read: max presence, minimal talent). I have backed off of that belief now that the band has been around this long, but it seemed like that to me back then.

I think Eddie's voice is better, but he became a caricature of himself at some point. Ten is a bad-ass album, IMO. I think Kurt was more of an MVP for Nirvana because of a greater contribution to the music.

Both bands have influenced tons of musicians, in good and bad ways.

I'm not the singer, I play the guitar. The bass player is/was the drummer in our old bands. He programs everything or will sample live snares, cymbals, kick, hi-hat if need be. The machine is playback of those efforts.
How does the crowd react?
We'll find out in a 11 days...but, the few friends that have seen us practice have no issues with it. Sort of like a seeing dj shadow, in a way. It works for us becasuse pA isn't a "rock" band.
We have way more control with volume and tempo anyway. Plus, you'd have to be an octopus to be able to play these songs on the drums.
We start at 9pm.
The next show will be at Reggies sometime in March and the Double Door sometime in May.
Never saw or heard of those bands.

You're all crazy. Pearl Jam was a shitty late-80's hair-band that over time (3 Albums I'd say) became a really, really good rock band. I love Pearl Jam--especially mid-late 90's stuff--but to say that they were better than Nirvana is flat out wrong. Nirvana was awesome right off the bat and was rapidly getting better. No one wrote songs like Cobain and his music changed the course of Rock n' Roll forever. Dave Grohl's OK. I like most of his music, but he's got a lot of filler on his albums. And lately all his stuff just sounds like Queens of the Stone Age ripoff...probably because it is. If you listen to an album like In Utero you'd notice there's a not a bad song on the album, and nothing before or after ever sounded like it.

I call myself a Pearl Jam fan, but they are what they are. When Ten came out it was "good" but I listen to it now and all I hear is gibberish and reverb. McCready and Ament save that album. Now everytime I hear a song from Ten on the radio I don't hesitate to change the station.

Agreed to most of that. If you listen to some of the old B-Sides, they were pretty bad. You have to remember, Mother Love Bone, which I really do not like much, was at least the early influence as far as the music. When Pearl Jam started putting together production for 10, they have admitted they changed the sound to sell records, but got away from what I they would have been otherwise, which was Mother Love Bone 2 without Andy Wood. Having never seen Nirvana live, I will say Pearl Jam is fun to see live. Yes Eddie was running around like an idiot, but it added excitement to the crowd.

In the end, I think McCready is a solid lead guitar and has some sweet riffs. They have a good overall band. They still get sold out shows and the people there are singing along with most every song, even the crap that was Riot Act.

A lot of you guys refer to Pearl Jams "10" album as their be all, end all record but I think Frank(whose the biggest PJ fan on the board) will agree that "Lost Dogs" just rocks and is by far the best . I suggest you guys go to I-tunes and download it and you will come away with a new vigor for Pearl Jam.

Songs like "Footsteps" ,"Alone", Hold on , are just of the songs that rock.

Actually, I think Binaural was one of their best albums. Grievance, Breakerfall, Sleight of Hand, Insignificance and Of The Girl, all very solid songs. Had just a great range of tunes to listen to, and they were great live. It was also the year of the 32 degree concert at Alpine Valley. Something about hearing Smile at the end of the concert.

The funny thing is some of those Lost Dogs songs are not like the original version on the bootleg copies, which were generally better. Alone and Dirty Frank are examples that came to mind. I think Brother as well has lyrics.

Vitalogy is my favorite PJ album, but that is likely due to the times when I was listening to it. I just remember thinking "is this the same band?" when I first heard the disc.
I haven't paid much attention to their newer stuff b/c I wasn't a huge fan from the start. I had TEN. I listened to the shit out of it at University just like everyone else. But at the time, I gravitated more towards the alice in chains, nirvana, primus, and sonic youth side of the northwest. Soundgarden was sort of the same way for me. I liked it, but I didn't LOVE it.
