I'd be interested to see if this was just the calling of a bluff in negotiations in a similar way to North. If Mac just wouldn't accept a lower offer and then ESPN was forced to follow through on a threat to take him off the air.

I wonder if negotiations will continue since he is under contract until May.

Lafayette, IN has no regularly scheduled local programming. If Purdue talk is on a weekday it is after SVP who ends at 4pm EST. Local weekend talk is sporadic and centered around fball and basketball.

I must confess to listening to more of Silvy & Waddle when I'm in the car ever since I saw Tom fill in on M&M on ESPN2. Didn't follow the Bears in his day, but he's a hottie now! :D  :D

Beardown, are you on crack tonight? Your song selection sucks. Paruch has nothing to worry about at whatever music station he works at.

Well, he's not GONE from ESPN...he's still the first choice to sub for anybody. But he did have his OWN show on the national ESPN radio lineup after Dan Patrick, but when Eric became the host of "Nascar Now" on ESPN television, he gave up his radio show.

That was pretty much my first thought. I'd like to think that this is the scenario and that Mac will be sensible enough to accept if it's a good offer (unless that book he's writing is REALLY good). Because honestly, what are his options besides the Score?

Wow.

I'm actually really bummed. Though I hadn't been able to listen as much lately as previously, I still enjoyed the show immensely and listened to MJH whenever I was in my car. I'm not sure what "trying new things" means, but it certainly cannot mean guaranteed ratings.

I'm happy I was kept informed during White Sox run in 2005 via online listenting to MJH afternoons and Silvy & Carmen mornings, and I'm happy I was able to meet many of you'se at MJH remotes. And to think I was already working on a song for the Manniversary contest. Talk about putting the cart before the horses.

Best of luck to all involved. Lately this show had hit a rough patch but it was still my 1st and only choice for afternoon drive.

I would have stacked the deck that a suspension would have taken him off the air before something like this

Mac...the latest (temporary) victim of the recession, and crappy sales people? Clearly Disney still has no real clue in the radio biz.

Maybe they're negotiating to replace him with Field Turf.

It's the only thing that makes sense.

Dan McNeil out at ESPN 1000

Dan McNeil’s tempestuous run at WMVP-AM 1000 came to an abrupt, uncharacteristically quiet end after his Friday afternoon broadcast, the station confirmed.

Sources say that no specific incident precipitated WMVP’s decision not to pick up the option on the final year of McNeil’s contract, reportedly worth more than $600,000 annually, but the cumulative effect of past run-ins, self-inflicted controversy and suspensions may have played a role.

McNeil remains under contract to WMVP into May but will remain off the air. Replacing him alongside John Jurkovic and Harry Teinowitz for the foreseeable future will be Carmen DeFalco, who has had a variety of roles at the station, including backing up McNeil.

“We’re looking to try some new things in the afternoon, and given the economic climate, we feel like this is the right time to do it,” WMVP boss Jim Pastor, who is regional general manager for ESPN Radio, said in a prepared statement. “Mac’s played a big part in ESPN 1000’s success. This afternoon I thanked him for that and wished him well in the future.”

McNeil was unavailable for comment.

This is the second major, well-paid Chicago sports talk star to get divorced from his station in less than a year. Mike North left WSCR-AM 670 last year when the station wanted him to take a pay cut. North bided his time with an Internet radio program and on Monday launched a Comcast SportsNet morning TV show that reunites him with former WSCR partner Dan Jiggetts.

Despite his popularity, McNeil has been suspended many times over the course of his more than 20-year career in Chicago sports radio.

His last big public blow-up came in June, when he insulted a female Comcast SportsNet executive on the air. He spent 19 days sidelined a year earlier after an ugly on-air spat with co-host Teinowitz, which supposedly led WMVP to tell McNeil there would be a “zero tolerance” policy regarding future incidents.

McNeil joined WMVP after ending a nine-year afternoon stretch at CBS Radio’s WSCR-AM 670 in late 2000. He began his radio career at Chicago Tribune parent Tribune Co.’s WGN-AM 720 in 1985 as a producer.

He later was executive producer of Chet Coppock’s weeknight sports talk show and Chicago Bulls broadcasts on WLUP-AM 1000, getting his first on-air exposure as a sidekick and fill-in host, as well as a contributor to Steve Dahl and Garry Meier’s program on the station.

Paula Farris is gonna think she had something to do with this. Hell, maybe she did. I'd fire Mac if Paula asked me to. Maybe she asked Jim Pastor. How do you say no to Paula?

I'm very happy for Carmen as I think he's a hell of talent and the nicest guy you would ever want to meet but to try and fill the shoes of Mac is a monumental task at best. I will give the new format a chance but Boers and Bernstein will be back on my radar.

I enjoy Waddle and Sillvy and thought they were building a bigger , better ESPN but ESPN has screwed the pooch with letting Mac go. I never turned on ESPN untill Danny made the move to 1000 and if he lands back at the Score or goes the way of SAT radio I will follow.

I want to thank Harry and Jurk and Mac for allowing me to enjoy the Saloon and for all the laughs and great radio they gave us over the years. I was sad the day they broke up the Heavy Fuel crew but this stings a little more because we have this board to use as a tool to vent , laugh , bitch and moan. Like Frank mentioned, I met a lot a great people because of the show and this board. The remotes, golf outings, Hawks nights(still holding Mac to that) were a ton of fun and guys like Woodridge, Frank, Spmack, Spaulding, Zack and the rest of you who attend those remotes made it all that much more fun.

I

Pretty horrible. I dont listen that regularly to the show, but Mac seems like a great guy and likely was screwed over here. Good luck Mac. Hopefully now you have some extra time and can come out to Hoops to drink with the rest of us losers.

I'm not surprised. That's how radio stations are. Pat you on the back, kick you in the ass.

This is further proof how cold the corporate world truly is. And radio today is as corporate as it comes. Some will point to satellite radio as the future - guess what gang XM/Sirius owes collectors $1 Billion dollars in the coming year, and that's the only reason why the government allowed the two struggling companies to form a monopoly.

I was awaken by a buzzing cell phone over here in Milan, Italy, and now I'm wide awake... Further proof that this is a 'global economy' and the 'information age'. This is disasterous news to be awakened with.

The fact that Pastor referenced the 'economic times' I'm sure this has a helluva lot more to do with the bottom line - than it does Mac's performance. He's the straw that stirs the drink on that show, AND THAT STATION, and he single handedly was the defibrillator for what was a 'dead' radio station - that was getting it's ass kicked on a regular basis. Allow me to break into Jerry Angelo. "Was Mac polarizing, and did he rub somepeople the wrong way?" "Sure he was, but the ratings that ESPN1000 enjoyed in afternoons the past several years were unmatched by that station, and will never be reached again. And don't kid yourselves, it had a trickle down effect on all the other shows at that station."

There were 1.1 Million people that lost their jobs in November and December, out of 2.6 million in all of 2008. As mentioned above - this one effects many of us in a personal way. ...and being a marketing professional, I'm full aware the first thing to get cut is advertising, as nobody wants to lay any hard working employees off, as it tears through an organization's psyche. Advertising is what keeps radio, TV and newspapers alive. It's a shitty time right now, as bad as it's been since the depression, and Mac's ouster is further proof of this.

Mac has affected us in a personal way the past several years at ESPN1000, for that I'm very grateful, and I wish Dan and his family the very best in the next several months, as it's gonna be a real motherfucker. God bless you Mackey. :(

...and although Carmen is being put in a very tough and awkward position, I wish him the best.

stunned at the development.

Once again, I have to really look at the people who "manage" radio stations. Never been impressed and this one just continues to baffle me.

If the 2 sides had an agreed upon 'option', most likely that option will be picked up if the employee is performing to the level expected. While Pastor & Co. might want to see them beat B&B every ratings period, I am pretty sure they have won more than they have lost in that realm?

So as management, if you agreed to an expectation and a price for that expectation, did you , as management price the performance wrong???

I know ESPN International has not been in love with Mac in the past, but it sure seemed like those days had been brushed aside and forgotten.

If this was a quanitative call, then someone else needs to some explaining , JIM PASTOR? if this was a qualitative call, then ESPN are morons!

And before I hear anything, I like Silvy and Waddle, but they are no MJH
