Mac will be back on the air in May. No doubt about it. He'll have to take less money, but I
imagine he'll work out something with the Score. No chance Carm, Jurko and Harry last more than a few months. ESPN is just waiting for the first chance to get out of Harry and Jurko's deals. Carm is good at night, but he already failed miserably when given a prime-time show with Silvy. Carm won't last. I expect Waddle and Silvy to move to afternoons..and a new 9-12 show of David Haugh and JD, or JD and Howard Griffith, or maybe Carm and JD...or possibly Colin Cowherd if ESPN goes on the (really) cheap. Just my opinion.

I'm not sure how I feel about Mac leaving. It certainly will make 2-6 radio listening not as enjoyable. I like Carm, but I agree with a few others who posted. Carm, JD, and Hood have some great chemistry. I think Hood and Carm should continue to work together.

But Mac was clearly the driving force. I won't be surprised to see the Good Kid leave when his contract is up and who will keep Harry in line? I like him, I like them all, but without guidance Jurko and Harry will just spend the afternoon arguing with each other over minutia. I just wish the Score had something worth listening to in the afternoon. I realize they have their own following but, B&B are boorish and ego maniacal for my taste.

Ah well, we don't always get what we want, right Mic?

Despite the fact they have different management running the station now, I'm not so sure that Mac is going back to "The SCORE" as so many have suggested. The economy really sucks, and the only way I think Mac gets back on the air there is if SportsRadio 670 does something with "Hampton & Holmes", Mike Murphy, or yes, even "Boers & Bernstein". Do they move "B & B" back to middays, reassign "Murph" again to evenings on nights the White Sox don't play, cut the stuttering Dan Hampton loose, put LoHo back on Bears' duty only to accommodate Mac? WSCR Program Director Mitch Rosen has some work to do, and it's not as easy as it seems...Remember, fans. When Mike North left "The SCORE" and "Mully & Hanley" moved to mornings, they thought LoHo was best suited of the younger guys to host a show full time, even before bringing #99 on board to co-host. This management team at WSCR has been really stubborn and resistant to make necessary changes to its lineup. To paraphrase one of Mac's favorite bands the Rolling Stones, "You Can't Always Get What You Want".

No one has yet said why it would be a good move for the Score to hire Mac. He's going to be expensive, and it sure sounds like most of the people who were listening to him are switching over anyway. It would make sense to hire him if ESPN wanted him, but if ESPN doesn't want him, what's the incentive? That he'd do a sports show on a general interest station like WGN? I can't imagine that'd happen.

I'd have to think a more likely outlet would be satellite radio, but I don't know that it'd be for anything like what Mac was making.

A very busy weekend and 13 pages of thoughts, boy it sure takes a while to post.

Needless to say I am very pissed about this decision. Obviously Mac was the cornerstone of MJH. I like Carmen, but like others have said, I don't think he'll command the respect from Jurko and Harry. Plus, Mac was a ball buster at times. Carmen is too nice of a guy (not that there's anything wrong with that). Harry will try to take advantage of this by trying to be a bigger player in the show. And this, I'm afraid, will just take the show down into the dumpster. I will still listen to ESPN during my day at work (mainly because that station comes in the best on my radio). I'm a big Waddle & Silvy fan. If they moved into the afternoon slot, I'd be all for that. I will not go to B&B since I can't stand Bernstein. If Mac were to go to the Score and face off against W&S, I'd stick with ESPN. Now, if ESPN did go to all national shows, I would find something else to listen to (maybe try WGN or see if I can get some music stations on the radio).

Mac, I wish you nothing but the best and thank you for all those years of great entertainment. And this sucks because I was hoping to make it to a Manniversary or Cubs/Sox tailgate one of these years.

It just goes to show you how much of an affect this news has been on us when you have 13 pages of thoughts and comments. Plus, just look at all the guys that came back on here to express their support for Mac that haven't been on here in years. To keep this board strong, I'm hoping those individuals don't wait for the next big shocker to particapate once again.

You know what it is...Meanwhile, there is word that "The SCORE" is indeed looking into re-hiring Mac, but which of the current guys may be sent packing? That's what I want to know...

A voice of reason here! There is no reason to sign him to the afternoon drive shift; B&B should naturally take care of things there. There is no reason to sign him to afternoons; Murph always takes care of business there. The only place you would sign him to is mornings, but there are two problems -- they aren't paying a lot now and not losing by a lot either, and Mac says he won't roll out of bed for less than a gazillion dollars. So I lose mornings to a national show, win afternoons, win drive time, win evenings. I don't need to win them all, just a majority. MVP appears to be going all national anyway... there is a glut of radio talent without contracts sitting on the sidelines anyhow... what is the urgency in signing Mac to a large contract? If I am SCR, I want to see how much ratings drop on that evening drive without Mac. If they were hauling in a 1.9 before and a 1.6 after, then I can sort of assign a number to his appeal and figure out how much I can pay him (and it will still be less than he wants to work for.)

My mother of all people - deaf in one ear, ironically - told me the news of Mac leaving "The Afternoon Saloon" (a name that will inevitably have to replace the "MJ & H" introductions out of segments). I had to read the Sun-Times article before it really hit home.

I interned with ESPN 1000 this past summer for the show and I absolutely loved Mac. I knew heading into work everyday that I'd be challenged, but that's exactly why I wanted the job. Although it was an unpaid internship, the experience I gained was invaluable. Mac's approach was definitely "tough love," but it's hard to enumerate (and really put into words) what I learned from the guy. And as a student, it's really difficult to afford much of anything... so Mac ofen paid for my lunch. [I know that's not big of a deal, but to someone whose student loans are about to kill them.. it's real nice.]

He's a real class act. He's efficiently professional but also someone that encourages people to enjoy what they do. He's a great person... all you have to do is look at his involvement with IN FEAT (Northwest Indiana Families for Effective Autism Treatment). [http://nwi.com/articles/2008/06/15/sports/region_sports/doc52bad37da3888def86257468006e2a02.txt?]

But let's not get crazy. Mac's always been young at heart and not one to sit on the sidelines when others are opining "incoherently" and "incorrectly." He wants his voice heard. Granted, he's got his occasional Sun-Times column... but he's a man of the people and a man bound by the airwaves.

He'll be back... whether it's with WMVP or The Score. Either way, I'm sure Mac adheres to one of the late great Richard Pryor mottos: "I ain't dead yet, $#&*#@"

Really? I heard he was taking over the 10-12 slot on the Score because they wanted someone with a litttle more life than the current guys occupying that spot.

It's funny as I watched the Howard Stern movie "Private Parts" on Saturday for the first time and the only thing I could think of is that this is how it went down with Mac. The goofy station manager "Pig Vomit" all over Mac and suits trying to figure out what to do with him and later they realise they fucked up.

I would not be surprised if January 16 becomes known as "Dan McNeil Day" in the city of Chicago, and is commemorated every year with a moment of silence to reflect on the events of that fateful day, the day that MJH fell silent!

There are no other alternatives, nothing else that even comes close to the quality of a Mac, Jurko and Harry program! It is tragically unfair that he has been taken away from us, our ears are going to be the ones to pay the highest penalty! ESPN is evil! They have NO right to place any restrictions on anything that any on-air personality should say, and if they do, especially MAC, it should be overlooked! Mac MADE that station, and should have cart blanche to say or do whatever he wants without fear of reprimand! If he doesn't care for his boss, he should be allowed to not listen to him and do and say whatever he wants without having to deal with things like "rules" and "codes of conduct", "listening to your boss"! After all, he is the voice of the people! He speaks for us! He doesn't work for his employer, ESPN, he works for us, right? They CAN'T fire a pain in the ass employee, can they?!!

This is a day that will be remembered for many generations to come! We will sit back and tell our grandkids about the day Dan McNeil was fired! Dan McNeil! It still sounds foul and absolutely hard to comprehend! Somehow we must all band together and support each other through this very difficult time! very happy that my first post on this MB is to say 'sayonara' to Danny Mac.

for far too long he was interested more in wagering and the politics of the radio station/radio show than in the teams/sports he was supposed to be discussing.

see ya Danny, don't forget to bundle up while standing in the unemployment line!

good luck Carm, I'm sure you'll do great
