Gotta give the kids in the farm system the opportunity to play in the bigs or pass them along and try again. Don't hold on to guys and hope they can turn it around, in this league a player should get one good shot at it and then move him along and get what you can for him.

I think the Cubs have given opportunities to some of their prospects. Soto came up at the end of 2007 and contributed right away. It took some time for Theriot to get playing time under Baker but he seemed to make a positive impression whenever an opportunity was given. Fontenot was a terror when first called up.

But a guy like Pie struggled in limited playing time. Should the Cubs given him more of a chance, did Pie get one good shot?. If Pie came up with Boston, do the Red Sox stay patient with him and give him 400 AB? I hate to keep referring to boston, but they are the model franchise. Ellsbury and Pedroia seemed to contribute right away.

I struggle with the question in that do the Cubs give their prospects a chance to succeed? the cubs are in a position where they can't spend time developing players up at the big leagues.

Why are the Red Sox in a position where they can spend time developing players up at the big leagues? Aren't they trying to win it every year? I think Pie got his shot and was moved a bit late. Why not move him before you make the decision to send him down and run out his options?

The past couple years have been improvement because of the players you mentioned but previous managers had a thing about giving time to younger players. I would hope that scouts and higher ups would take the initiative to get those players at bats or innings.

What the Fuck are you talking about. In just the past few years, they brought up Ryan Theriot, Geovany Soto, Micah Hoffpauir, Carlos Marmol, Jeff Samardzija, Sean Marshall, and Mike Fontenot. The farm system has been producing very well in recent years. Theriot and Soto were both vital componants of this past years 97 win team and Fontenot was a solid contributor that may start this season. All position players developed in the Cubs system. Try again.....

Okay, seriously. Steve, did you post this while you were drunk?

2 career HRs and 8 career RBI for Hoffpauir, and Steve proclaims hims the best thing since sliced bread

walkrman, #1 will provide funding for #3, but not funding for #2.

Theriot hit .307 last year. He had a stellar season. Soto was the starter for the National league in the All Star game, as well as the rookie of the year. Hoffpauir had an unbelieveable year, with 25 Hr's and 100 RBI in AAA in UNDER 300 AB's!! He followed that up, with hitting .342 with the Cubs, with a .400 on base pct. His slugging pct. was .534. I would love it, if the Cubs would have made a deal with the Orioles for Biran Roberts that would have included Lee, so as to free up the position for Hoffpauir. Hoffpauir is the reason they let Daryle Ward go. They will use Hoffpauir in his role, barring an injury that would put him in an everyday role. The Cubs might not have a farm system that is producing as well as say the Twins, but it has produced pretty well in the past few years. Just look accross town, what position players have they produced from the minors? You cannot include Alexi Ramirez, as he never played a day in the minors. He was developed in Cuba. Jerry Owens??? He still can't reach base enough to play regularly. Brian Anderson...They still sign a fossil like Griffey last year, because they believe so little in him. Never has been a regular starter. The answer is, they do not have a regular starter they have developed in the minor leagues in the past few years that starts for them. Compared with the White Sox, the Cubs have an outstanding minor league system. Compared to a lot of teams, the Cubs minor league system is pretty productive. But they do have room for improvement, as many early round draft picks do not pan out. But that is true for most every team. I'm more concerned with whether Ricketts will make deals to bring in Brian Roberts (Yes) and Jake Peavy. I want to see them win NOW.

You're a fuckin idiot. Over the last few years the Sox (who had nothing to do with this discussion) have used their farm system to acquire major league talent like Robby Alomar, Freddy Garcia, Carl Everett, Jim Thome, Javy Vazquez, Matt Thornton, Nick Swisher and Carlos Quentin. They have a different philosophy towards minor league talent and trying to compare them to the cubs is apples and oranges but I wouldn't expect a dimwit like to to understand that.

The Sox farmsystem also produced Brandon McCarthy, who turned into John Danks.

Hoffpauir is the prototypical AAAA star.

Sox have had more success with probably one player from their farm system then the combination of players the Cubs have produced in the past 30 years. I think his name was Frank Thomas?

Hoffpauir is the new Daryle Ward: first bat off the bench, emergency starter at first or a corner outfield. NOT AN EVERYDAY PLAYER. Honestly, guys.

Ironically enough, the Cubs also had that same sort of success with a White Sox 5th OF/Farmhard that they acquired from Texas.

As per Fred Mitchell, Ron Santo also believes the farm system should be a top priority for the new owner. I dont know if this strengthens or weakens my argument though...

Sure, I do wish and think they can do both.

Hendry is a good GM who has been the unfortunate beneficiary of players that have never panned out to their potential in either the later portion of September or early portion of October. Not to bring up bad memories, but 03 was the year. He was the guy that turned Bobby Hill into Aramis Rameriz and Kenny Loften. In 2004, he was the one to turn Hee Soep Choi into Derrick Lee. in 07, he brought in Soriano as one of the top 5 highest paid contracts in baseball. He brought in Baker, a proven winner in San Fran. He brought in Pinella, a proven winner. Unfortunately, the players in the end of failed him.

BUT, he may no longer be the right man for the job if he cannot get the ownership to spend. If that is the case, you have to get a GM who can focus and improve whatever the problem is with talent evaluation and scouting of position players. Hendry has started to make improvements by placing the right people in positions to evaluate talent. Have you noticed one huge change over the past few years that doesnt get talked about much? Remember when Baker used to complain about how advanced scouting didnt prepare the players to face pitchers they havent seen before? I remember at least a few times where the Cubs got shut out by some random pitcher and that comment had been spewed. Now, it may be that Pinella just doesnt talk about that kind of stuff, but the Cubs rocked pitchers over the last year and a half. The key is that they beat up on a pitcher during an inning. Thats advanced scouting for you when you see an entire lineup bat around because they see something in either the pitchers delivery or their mode of operation out on the mound and every player is aware of it.

Hendry isn't one of the worst GM's in the league but he isn't one of the best either. I agree that early in his tenure he made some great moves. His best was dumping Todd Hundley for Grudz and Karros. My problem with Hendry is he hasn't made many more moves like this. Unless Hendry can send a prospect to a team reducing payroll or Hendry is trying to reduce payroll himself, Hendry probably isn't making the trade.

As for the prospects not producing, those are Hendry's guys. Hendry was Assistant GM/Minor League Director until took over as GM in 2002. Guys like Patterson, Pie, Orie, Ryan Harvey, and Brian Dopirak are Hendry's guys. That's not to take away from Hendry being involved in drafting pitchers like Wood, Prior, Garland, and Zambrano among others. But Hendry and crew have really struggled drafting position players. That being said, he did hire Tim Wilken from the Blue Jays, who is highly regarded as a scout. So I'm hoping he can help.

And I know I said Prior was a good draft pick. I still stand by it. Nobody knew what he would become what he has. It's too bad the Twins didn't take Prior and the Cubs could've had Joe Mauer.

My statement was that in the past few years the Sox have not produced a good everyday positional player that is currently starting for them. If you want to talk about guys they traded away, where are those players starting? How are they producing? The Cubs turned Bobby Hill into Aramis Ramirez. Does that mean the Cubs farm system is great? No, it means some other team over-valued a young player and wanted to either dump a salary, or trade a guy, before he could become a free agent...Thats all it means. The Sox have no everyday positional players that they produced from their minor league system. Meanwhile, the Cubs have produced Theriot and Soto in the past couple of years and Hoffpauir, who would be starting if they had 1st base open.

Yes, Puckhead-I would love to see Hoffpauir starting instead of a guy (Lee) that strikes out over 100 times, hits into more double players than anyone in Baseball and had the most at bats on the team, yet knocked in just 90 runs, while batting 3rd for the team with the most runs scored in the league. I think Hoffpauir would do better. Lee has had 1 big season in his career and a few good ones. But he's overrated and I would trade him and his 13.5 million dollar salary to the first team that offered up a case of baseballs.

I also include talent evaluation as part of the overall umbrella that is farm system. Though Alexi Rameriz was not in the minor leagues much, he was evaluated well and has been a great addition. It also includes the ability to evaluate the talent of other team's farm systems. Quentin was an MVP candidate for much of last year. When you compare that to the Cubs, who brought Matt Murton over the sox, Fukudome over from Japan... well, I would rather have Rameriz and Quentin and Ill leave it at that. You are right though, the Sox have not produced a major league ready player from the minor leagues since Ordonez, I believe.

As noted last year in this section on several occasions, Derrick Lee was hitting into a lot of double plays because his swing has changed. He gets jammed a lot because he cannot get around on the inside pitch the way he used to. He adjusted his mechanics a bit during the season and I thought had a decent few playoff games. His defense is still top notch, which I cannot say for Hoffpauir. I want Hoffpauir to have a chance to play, just not at the expense of a major league ready winner with proven talent. It would be ridiculous to suggest otherwise.
