Fresh off scooping the Cubs' acquisition of Aaron Heilman, ESPN Radio's Bruce Levine has more info about the team's plans.

Levine says the Cubs will sign backup catcher Paul Bako to a one-year, $750K deal once they clear a spot on the 40-man roster. The 2-for-1 Heilman trade takes care of that.
The Cubs are still looking at Braden Looper and Randy Wolf if they aren't able to reignite the Jake Peavy talks.
The Cubs have Juan Uribe on the radar as a bench bat and backup infielder.

Riot's a career 290/300 hitter who is an above average defender who has shown a great ability to get on base to have DLee hit into a double play. How do you define a 'true' short stop?

I think he was talking about Theroit's lack of range and arm at the position and not his standing as an offensive juggernaut.

I mean, maybe I'm seeing it through clouded vision, but I'd rate him as a B to high B on good days defensively at the position.

I guess I should also mention that he replaced Todd Walker as my favorite Cub who doesn't have a ton of talent, but always seems to work his ass off.

Walker was notorious during his time w/ the Cubs for being the last guy to get to the stadium on gameday. Hard worker? Hardly. Natural hitter and generally irritable? Absolutely.

Theriot would be ideally positioned at 2nd base. He lacks the range and the strong throwing arm that a prototypical SS possesses. He is a David Eckstein type shortstop. He has to get to the ball and get rid of it quickly, because he lacks the good arm. Cedeno was not as accurate with his arm, but he does have a strong arm. He also had more range. I had really hoped the Cubs would have gotten Furcal as a free agent and then moved Theriot and Fontenot, along with a starting pitcher (Marshall or Marquis-before he was traded) to Baltimore, for Roberts. An infield that had Roberts and Furcal, would be stellar. Plus the havoc they could raise on the bases would be fun to watch. I agree that Theriot is at best, a grade C- defender. I like his effort, he gives you 100%. But I gotta call em as I see em.

With Crede likely gone and Fields still questionable wouldn't it have been a good idea for the Sox to sign him to a contract like this as a possibility at 3rd or a backup at short/2nd? I know he was a pretty hated figure but he played well last year. Haven't analyzed the Sox roster position by position so far, am I missing something?
