I don't know. The quarterback competition between Orton, Hanie and Basanez has me giddy.

He will be cut if the Bears draft a QB and the Bears need to draft a QB.

You could pick a lot worse players to be a third string QB though.

Two years means nothing.
You can get cut any time and the team
isn't liable for the remaining years.
Every team needs 4 OB's to start training camp.
This is not a bad pickup.
Hopefully they'll go to camp with Simms, Orton,
Hanie, and Basanez.

If anyone thinks Brett Basanez will challenge Kyle Orton for the starting job in training camp this summer, you are sorely mistaken. He might challenge for the the #3 job, but he's nothing more than a practice squad candidate in my opinion. After actually earning a spot on the roster last season with his play in preseason games, the Bears will give Caleb Hanie quite a look as possibly Kyle's #2 backup if they don't sign a veteran backup once Rex Grossman is sent packing. Seriously...

Get ready for the second coming... Bears QB problems are solved.

For the record, he probably wont make the roster... but glad to see him back in Chicago. He's a smart player and a tough competitor, but his arm strength is not NFL caliber. He's small, but bigger than Grossman.

But Brett is old news. We look to the future. And the future is Carol Stream's own Evan Watkins... but let him have his 4-5 years at NU first.

Why would anyone question the Bears signing of a QB? The Bears obviously know how to find QB's and develop them! Someday...someday they have to to find a franchise QB.

Then again...I think someday the Cubs will win a World Series as well.

Jonathan Quinn.

Why not have Brett Basanez and CJ Bacher battle it out for a roster spot?

I believe there is a NFL rule against Asian QBs.

Who's the bigger homer for their team?

A. Frank C. for the Sox

B. Elmhurst Steve for the Cubs.

C. Walkrman 5 for the Cowboys

D. Stonesroses86 for the Yankees/NY Giants

Well you went to the school, so everyone is usually a homer in that regard.

He will crash into walls and sacrifice himself for the good of the team. Move over Caleb Hanie, Brett is now the future of the franchise. Brett's heart, along with running trick plays to Garrett Wolfe and Devin Hester will bring a minimum of 4 straight superbowls to Soldier Field. The Lombardi trophy will be renamed the Basanez trophy when Brett retires as the greatest QB to ever play the game.

670 "The SCORE's" Zach Zaidman, who is also the sideline reporter on WBBM 780 and the Chicago Bears Radio Network, tried to set the record straight last night concerning Brett Basanez's signing Tuesday by the team. Zach said that the Bears are holding their mini-camp in March this year due to changes in the team's coaching staff. He added that with Rex Grossman out of the picture, the Bears need three quarterbacks to work the mini-camp, usually held in May. It doesn't necessarily mean that Basanez will be around beyond Bourbonnais. Besides, I think the Bears will sign a veteran QB that'll likely challenge Caleb Hanie for the #2 job behind Kyle Orton once the free agency period opens at the end of this month.

SHARK,
THat seems to make the most sense. He's got enough fire to push during training camp, but the probability he will make the roster is very low, IMHO. But who knows.

I think Brett will be lucky to earn a spot on the practice squad, just like where he was with the Carolina Panthers. Anyone real excited or enamored that Basanez will challenge Orton for the starting job in Bourbonnais is kidding themselves! The Bears seem to like the upside of Caleb Hanie for what it's worth...Besides, I'm not about to give up on Orton, not by a longshot!

That's the problem with Lovie. He won't LET Baz challenge Orton. He's too afraid of his QB's fragile psyche.

Mud, that's not the reason why Basanez signed. When free agency starts, there are 2 veteran QBs who are currently backups around the NFL that the Bears will give a long, hard look. One of them is Byron Leftwich from the new Super Bowl Champion Pittsburgh Steelers & the other is Phil's kid down in Tennessee with the Titans, lefty Chris Simms.
