Looks like Kenny is hot on the heels of another Cuban defector. He's a power hitting 3B so I'm sure he won't come as cheap as Ramirez. They say he's 19 which means he's 22. This could be a hell of an infield with Beckham at 2B, Ramirez at SS and Viciedo at 3B.

Good to see Contreras is good for something.

I didn't see it in the article, but what other teams are showing interest in him?

Beckam needs a couple seasons in the minors methinks.

I meant to say it could be a hell of an infield in the future but.....

2008 first-round pick Gordon Beckham went 5-for-5 with two homers, a double and seven RBI for the Saguaros of the AFL on Thursday.

A career day for the former Georgia Bulldog. Since getting a few days off to deal with the loss to the hated Gators, he's gone 7-for-9, putting him at .378/.473/.644 in 45 at-bats. Beckham is still playing shortstop for now, but it might be that he'll move to second, assuming that Alexei Ramirez adjusts to short as well as hoped. He's going to move quickly.

I read the article in the Sun Times today and this kid sounds like the real thing. I just wonder how high the bidding will go and if Reinsdorf will allow Kenny to go high enough to get him.

If this 19 year-old, Steve, is everything he's hyped, I bet Uncle Jerry gives Kenny the green light to bid big $$$$ to get Dayan. I hope Scott Bora$ isn't involved, or Jerry might hang up the damn phone...

His agent is Jamie Torres, who seems to have cornered the market on defectors.

I don't know a thing about this guy other than what I have read in the newspaper on Saturday. Things sound good, but I am always dubious of foreign players with big reputations. On the positive side, this one is actually young.

Right now, Paul Konerko is still the first baseman, unless the Anaheim Angels want to pursue Paulie in a deal should they tell Mark Teixeira & agent Scott Bora$ to get lost...Besides, there's talk "Dirty 30" Nick Swisher could replace Jason Giambi in the new Yankee Stadium...

Strangely, i have more faith in Swish than PK rebounding at this point...

Swisher never got going but he was asked to do things such as leadoff, take a lot of pitches, and play the majority of time in center. Could it get any worse? he's bound for a rebound, I'd hate to see him have a good year elsewhere.

Konerko has basically done this his entire tenure on the southside, have a good half a season, suck for 2 years, etc etc. He hasn't been a productive hitter since the beginning of '06, and when you start talking about slumps lasting 2+ seasons, i'm not sure he can get get it back.... rather i'm not sure fans are going to want to sit through running him out there everyday waiting for him to resemble a major league first baseman..

That's what I heard, and over the weekend, 670 "The SCORE's" Brian "The Whipping Boy" Paruch mentioned that the White Sox & Mets have had discussions about a possible Bobby Jenks deal, according to a Boston Globe story.

A bad Konerko year is about the equivalent of an average Swisher year.

well then the low expectations must dresss it up nicely. I'm just tired of waiting for PK to come out of one of his funks and it doesn't help that he is emblematic of the slow-footed softball team they currently have...

Nice article in the Tribune about Viciedo. I wonder about his defense tho, even tho the article infers he can pick 'em. Remember KWilliams comment at SoxFest about how he plays: seemed to say, Yeah, he can hit but...
Can he play defense? Anybody actually seen him bend over pick up a ball?

Dayan Viciedo will get long look at White Sox camp
Cuban teen has great skills, especially as a hitter, and could make a big impact for the White Sox

By Mark Gonzales | Tribune reporter
7:45 PM CST, February 8, 2009

The hitting credentials were impressive, but the White Sox's investment was even more breathtaking.

In signing 19-year-old Cuban infielder Dayan Viciedo in December, the Sox at least bought themselves plenty of evaluation time during a long spring training.

The Sox seem to thrive on spring surprises, but Viciedo presents a different challenge.

Boone Logan jumped from Class A to the 2006 Opening Day roster at 21 years old, though as a middle reliever. Cuban infielder Alexei Ramirez signed a four-year, $4.75 million contract but became a starter only after Juan Uribe strained a hamstring in mid-May.

Viciedo must unseat a more experienced and now healthy Josh Fields to win the starting job at third base. But the Sox's four-year, $10 million investment in Viciedo, for whom they outbid the Yankees and Red Sox, indicates he will play a significant role in their long-term plans.

"You don't see a 16-year-old play on a national team [as he did]," said an international scout for an American League team.

Still, the same scout and two evaluators from a National League club think the Sox's investment is too risky. They point to Viciedo's previous weight problems as a warning flag. They also suspect he will end up at first base, meaning his strong arm will be less of a factor in his value.

But the Sox figure Viciedo will follow Ramirez's lead and reverse a trend of Cuban position players who have fizzled or attained less success than was projected for them.

Ramirez has taken Viciedo under his wing in the Miami area by working out with him and showing him how to acclimate to a new country and language in the manner similar to that of Sox pitcher and fellow Cuban Jose Contreras.

According to those who have seen him lately, the forecast is encouraging.

"He's very good," Ramirez said. "He's very strong."

The Sox instructed the 6-foot-1-inch Viciedo to report to spring training at 230 pounds. The AL scout was worried because he said Viciedo had swelled to 262 after leaving Cuba last fall, though he trimmed to about 246 around the time of his tryout in November.

"He's not as fat as everyone thinks he is," general manager Ken Williams said. "The weight is what it is, but it's not fat. He's a big kid."

Based on reports from manager Ozzie Guillen and coach Joey Cora, who has observed workouts in Miami, they have no doubts Viciedo can play third.

"He said he didn't come here to go to Triple A," Guillen said.

But Guillen places a premium on defense, and Viciedo must show he can do more than hit. During a two-day workout in the Dominican Republic, Viciedo ripped line drives to the opposite field and wasn't fooled by breaking pitches.

"He has more hitting ability than Alexei," the AL scout said. "But he has to make adjustments. I see some ways to get him out. Alexei is a great athlete who is very smart and can adjust.

"The Sox were right on with Alexei, but I want to see if Viciedo can do more than hit over an extended period."

You mean Griffey in center isn't good enough for you?

Well, that was Kenny, not Guillen.

Playing Wise in the outfield would be a better example.

Of what?

Let's do a little more regression analysis on one of the top three defensive positions in baseball and throw out the names of Mackowiak and Everett.

A better example of Ozzie not putting a premium on defense.

Knowing Jerry, his theory on this kid is that it takes about $3 mill per player in the minors to develop a major league player. Thus in his mind, paying $10 M for a 19 year old (or alleged 19 year old) is not a big deal.

Been reading stuff about him for a year now, if he can prove to hit, he just becomes the DH, simple.

Channel 5 showed some tape of this guy working in the batting cage a few days ago. This kid is huge and will probably eat himself out of the league by the time he's twenty-five. I will be surprised if he is not a regular on the major league club by June.

I expect several pages of an impassioned defense of the youngster and his weight by the women on this board.
