He'll be an MLB player, just not yet. Kid already seems to swing an MLB bat, but he needs some time in the minors to develop.

He could be the best 2B on the team, and I'd bet that the Sox will keep him in the minors long enough so that this season won't count against them for free agency/arbitration.

IMO the smartest thing to do. No need to rush him.

Precisely.

I actually think Getz will be quite solid this year.

Beckham is miles ahead of Bettancourt and Lillibridge.

I was in Arizona this weekend. Sox fans, you gotta get to Camelback Ranch. The place is fantastic.

He has yet to play a game above A ball. There is NO need to rush him. I'd like to see him start in AA and play the position they think he will play in the majors. Second? Short? Third? Make the decision and let his hall of fame career get started. 8)

Easy does it! Gordon Beckham's not ready for the majors right now. He needs seasoning down in the minors, and there's a chance, albeit slim, that he could be here in September. In the meantime, the starting second baseman come Opening Day wears jersey #17 now, Chris Getz, or the ex-Colorado Rockie who wears #5 Jayson Nix.

GOod point, but I think a big difference there is that Alexi played at the professional level before he came to the Sox.

Point very well taken, Frank, and I believe Alexei was 26 years old when he arrived on the Southside...

Guys, I wasn't breaking any Gordon Beckham news, let alone Alexei Ramirez...I was trying to temper any enthusiasm concerning Beckham being ready for the majors right now, when he's not.

But there were four previous posts (Frank, BD, RFDC, and Keyser Soze) that had done just that. I do commend you on your research thought and providing the jersey numbers for Chris Getz, and the ex-Colorado Rockie Jayson Nix who wears #5.

You are on your own on that one, Rogers Park...I haven't seen that much of Beckham to really notice...

My exact words were "not yet", as in he is not ready to play at the MLB level this year.

After only 4 spring training games, I don't know how anybody can make that determination.

As it stands now, Chris Getz is believed to be the front runner for the second base job, although Jayson Nix has done very well with the bat for what's it worth in the early going. There's a long way to go in Spring Training, and the word on Brent Lillibridge is that he's more a shortstop than a second baseman.

What jersey number does Lillibridge wear?

According to whitesox.com, Brent Lillibridge has been assigned #18, Orlando Cabrera's old number, while I thought he wore #1 with the Braves. Interestingly enough, #1 is open with the Sox right now...Speaking of Cabrera, Yahoo! Sports says he's signed with the A's, and that the Sox will receive draft picks for compensation.

When you watch Lillibridge, Bettancourt, Nix, and whomever play the middle infield this year, you'll want Beckham here immediately.

The guys who played college ball are ready sooner. It's not rushing him.

Brent Lillibridge is said to be learning a new position at second base. The word is the guy who doesn't get the second base job, Lillibridge or Jayson Nix, might be going north as a reserve as a possible backup to Alexei Ramirez at shortstop. Yeah, I know they also have Wilson Betimit, but #15 in silver & black may be better suited to backup at third for either Josh Fields or Dayan Viciedo or at first base to give Paul Konerko a breather. Either Lillibridge or Viciedo could be the odd men out in the Sox infield...

Beckham hasn't played above A ball. Hitting a HR off the great Carmen Cali is great and all but asking him to take 4 AB's against the likes off Cliff Lee, Justin Verlander, Doc Halladay, CC Biggins, Josh Beckett, etc. is asking too much. His time will come.

Have any of you "he needs seasoning" guys saw a player and recognized this guy is the real deal??? With me it was Bill Madlock when he 1st came up with the Rangers, Frank Thomas, conversley Brian Anderson a guy that just can't hit a breaking ball? Maybe I should start anew thread on this ????
