I have been a decent supporter of Angelo and his 'plans', usually.

Cedric Benson, Rex Grossman, Mark Colombo, Mike Haynes. OK, none worked out well, but I will agree with the plan. The plan to upgrade from T Jones. The Plan to get a QB, the plan to get a LT right away. Sure you can say he didnt evaluate those players well, but at least you can see what he was trying to do.

This lack of any interest in any free agent WR's is just amazing and could very well be his downfall.

TJ signed with seattle today.

The only one I'd like to get is Boldin but I don't think it's going to happen. Maybe his past WR free agent signings have made him weary. Moose and Booker did not rock my world.

Boldin via trade, but I'll take Bryant Johnson over anybody we have now.

Angelo is clearly banking on Devin Hester and Greg Olson continuing to improve, probably a high pick on a WR, and Earl Bennett breaking into the top 3 WR's on ther roster, obviously not hard if he has any ability at all.

It's a very thin group right now that they have. I would be surprised if they didn't sign some veteran WR, but he won't be anything more than a #3 WR on most teams (though on our team any veteran signing could be our #2).

TJ is a very good player, he would have helped here, but his age (32) and his contract demands were both a concern.

According to ESPN's Scouts Inc grades, there are at least 10 WR UFAs out there who represent an upgrade over at least 3 players on our roster? Using BLloyd's score as a guide and assuming that his score is comparable to Rasheid davis + Mbooker

Drew Bennett

To me, Laverneus Coles is the one I don't get. Why would you not pursue him?

They should and I hope they will. I wouldn't mind the Eagles trying him out.

Too late...Coles is Cincinnati-bound, Eaglo Jeff, not to say the Bears were that interested.

Henderson and Coles are both gone now.....

The Rams may be releasing Holt because he has a roster bonus due in a few days, and his agent is also pushing fo the release. He'd be a guy I'd be very interested in - I don't think he's done, just stuck on a horrible team with no QB last season. Saying that, I doubt the Bears get him given their lack of interest to this point in the free agent market.

Tory Holt is looking to get out of St Louis. I think he would look good in
a Bears uniform for a couple of years.

T-Bone, wishful thinking...I don't think the Bears have ANY INTEREST in Torri Holt or Terrell Owens, now that he's been released in Dallas...Even though either one would be an upgrade, I think T.O. in particular wants big $$$$, and won't get it here. :( :(

They would be more open to Holt than Owens (pretty obvious statement), but Holt will have more of a market, meaning it's extremely unlikely he would sign with the Bears.

Can someone please explain to me what Jerry is doing? I would really love to understand. The Bears sucked on offense at the end of the season. They had a roster full of #3 and #4 WR's with one having the potential to be a #2. They had a quarterback that from my seat looked like the rest of the NFL figured out and whose accuracy fell off after 10 yards. An offensive line that is old and crumbling. And a rookie RB that was worked like a mule. Now going into the draft their offensive line is worse and there were no improvements in any of the other areas. How does he expect this team to win? He is setting up his coaches to fail with his draft only strategy.

At this point in free agency, I think it's safe to assume that the Bears are not going to make any moves that will make the team better on paper heading into the draft. It's really going to come down to the players on the team (Orton, Forte, Hester, Olson and Bennett) improving, and Angelo having a solid draft.

Let's also not downplay that the Bears feel that re-tooling their defensive coaches is going to result in players playing better, and the strategy being improved.

So, the simple answer to your question is that the Bears believe their defense will improve next season, play more like they expected it to (Top 10) and the offense won't have to score 30 points to win games.

Receiving Corp:

1) Improve From Within - Devin Hester played very well down the stretch of the season. It's easy to say he sucks, and he shouldn't be a WR, but the facts are that he did improve as the season went on. From Week 12 to Week 17, he had 57, 67, 80, 46, 12 and 85 yards receiving. How many passes did Kyle Orton miss to an open Hester down the stretch of the season as well? That was a weekly story line for Orton - missing Hester on a deep pass. I'm not going to predict that Hester is going to be Steve Smith. He's not, but he can be a very good WR.......Greg Olson should continue to be a dependable option for Orton over the middle and occassionally down the field when matched up with a slow defender. I don't think it's a stretch to say he'll continue to improve.....Matt Forte will be a reliable option out of the back field as a safety valve for Orton as well. Finally, Earl Bennett has a great opportunity to step into a role next season. It could turn out that he's absolutely horrible considering he couldn't crack the rotation with last year's WR's, but if his main competition is Rashied Davis, he would stand to have a solid chance to become a rotation player.

2) Draft - Jerry Angelo is going to add a WR in the first 3 rounds of the draft. At this point, I would guess a Round 2 selection. As we know, this position tends to produce projects so we may not have a lot of impact for next season from a pick here. Still, you can't throw a blanket on a player drafted in Round 1 or 2, and automatically refer to him as a project without seeing his development.

3) Free Agency/Trade: I don't hold out much hope for A.Boldin being traded to the Bears. I don't think the Bears would ever sign Terrell Owens, and Holt is probably a long shot. Best hope here is just sign a veteran WR to be another body. So, we can see that Angelo is obviously depending on Hester/Olson/Bennett to improve next season while finding more talent at WR early in the NFL Draft.

Offensive Line:
Jerry Angelo is rebuilding the offensive line. With the signing of Frank Omiyale, it would appear the Bears prefer to play him at Josh Beekman's Guard spot, and making Beekman a backup Guard and Olin Kreutz's future replacement at center. Obviously, Chris Williams will be the LT next season, and drafting a RT is probably still very high on the list, even if they resign St.Claire. The Bears could go into next season with 2 rookies (I consideer Chris Williams to be that) at the tackle spots, Omiyale at a guard spot, and then Garza/Kreutz as the crusty old veterans. I like what Angelo is doing here, assuming he drafts an OT in the first 3 rounds.

QB:
Kyle Orton is a one year rental at this point. If he plays well, he'll be resigned. If he regresses or is average, he'll either be allowed to walk by the Bears or real competition, as in, another 1st round QB will be brought in next season. He's really the key to how much rebuilding Jerry Angelo will have to do. If he plays consistently, the Bears will feel that they have a solid QB who they can win with, and he'll be resigned. If not, it's back to the drawing board.

RB:
Matt Forte played very good as as rookie. Now, let's hope they don't run him into the ground. Either resign Kevin Jones with the intention of giving him 10 carries a game or find someone else to do that whether it's Garrett Wolfe, another rookie, or a veteran off the scrap heap.

If you're talking draft, I expect 2 of their first 3 picks to be an OL and WR. That leaves 1 pick for another defensive back or another defensive lineman, plus picks 4-7.

I will be happy with the draft if we go WR, DE, and OL in any order in the first 3 rounds.

I really won't be too upset with most anything they do. There are a lot of positions that could use an upgrade.

this team has a dozen holes and can only hope to fill a couple of them in the draft. quick, name who we drafted in rounds 4-7 last year.

I'm starting to wonder if Eugene Levy, I mean Jerry Angelo, knows what in the hell he's doing trying to generally manage this team...

Will this be a replay of 2005 with a defense that's not as good. You still need to score on offense even if you have a great defense. You can't go into a season with holes at all of these positions.

QB
#1WR
#2WR
RB (backup)
RT
LG
FB
MLB (time to move Urlacher to the outside)
LOLB
S
Nickle Corner
Dime Corner
RE (Ogunleye hasn't been dominant since he has been here)
LE (Brown really can't get to the QB and Marinelli may need to perform a miracle on Anderson)
P (Maynard won't be around much longer)

Some of these may be questions, and possibly holes, but the Bears aren't looking for another QB, MLB, Nickel, DE (maybe one only), P....I get your point - you want to improve at every position, but it's impossible too.

Anyone who thinks Brett Basanez will be the second or third string QB is kidding themselves! He's nothing more than a practice squad candidate at best. As for Caleb Haney, that's another story...

I understand P and MLB aren't likely to be addressed. That being said the Bears still need at least a backup QB or a project. They also need a LB because Hunter was too ouchy and appeared to take a couple steps back last year. Do you want to go into the season with Danielle "I no clue what I'm doing" Manning at nickle? Graham and Vasher aren't strong enough.

I'm ok with Manning at nickel. I'm not comfortable with him, but he played well there last season.

Let Graham/Vasher battle for the CB Spot. Best man wins.

I wouldn't be shocked if the Bears spent a 6th round pick on a QB, but I think it's more than likely that they let Hanie and the new guy from NW battle it out for the #2/#3 spot.

I'd love to see an OLB come in, but don't expect Angelo to do anything here beyond a mid-late round pick to compete with Hunter and Roach.
