What year did 3 pointers start? That might give you a better idea.

I am stumped, great trivia question. I was going to paste the entire McDonalds
alumni list but that would have been a very long post.

Yup. Chris Ford made the first one.

But the story was about a high schooler, so wouldn't it need to be when the 3 point line first started in high school, not the NBA?

3 point line didn't hit high school until the mid 80s. I
think it was 1986 actually. Early guesses anyone?
Let's list all the national champion game opponents
from 1985 on to start.

The 3 point line first started in 1986-87 in high school.

10. Isiah Thomas, Indiana, 1981
Thomas, a sophomore point guard, scored 19 of his game-high 23 points and had four steals in the second half of the final against North Carolina to lead Indiana to a 63-50 victory and the second of Bob Knight's three national titles. Two of those steals came in the first 90 seconds after halftime and resulted in easy layups. "I thought the key for us were the two quick steals Isiah got at the start of the second half," Knight said. "That got us going."

i was curious if the "it" in quotes was a clue. but that doesn't make sense as far as the high school 3-pointer timeline though...

I got it...

Jay Williams.
Williams, Jay 1999 St. Joseph’s H.S., Metuchen, NJ Duke New Jersey Nets

during his senior year. In basketball that year, Williams was named a First Team All-State Player in New Jersey, the New Jersey Player of the Year, a Parade All-American, a USA Today first team All-American, and a McDonald's All-American, where he competed in the Slam Dunk Contest and the McDonald's All-American Game, scoring 20 points in the contest

At Duke, Williams became one of the few freshmen to average double figures in scoring, and was named ACC Rookie of the Year and National Freshman of the Year by The Sporting News, averaging 14.5 points, 6.5 assists and 4.2 rebounds per contest. He was also a first team Freshman All-American by Basketball Times.

In the summer of 2000, Williams shined as a member of the U.S. select team, a group of college players picked to play an exhibition against USA Basketball's "Dream Team", helping his team to surprisingly dominate the much more experienced pros for the first half of the game, before eventually succumbing to defeat in the second half.

Back at Duke that fall, Williams started all 39 games as a sophomore and lead the Devils to the 2001 NCAA National Championship, earning NABC Player of the Year honors.

My guess is Jordan Farmar but he didn't average 50/game.

Here are the listed National High School Record holders for points per game, career and season.

I think he has his facts wrong.

Per Game — Career
41.1 Steve Blehm (Devils Lake North Dakota School for the Deaf, ND),
1970-73 (3,859/94)
40.4 Ervin Stepp (Phelps, KY), 1977-80 (3,071/76)
37.5 Steve Farquhar (Calvary Baptist Christian, NJ), 1983-85 (2,701/72)
37.2 Greg Procell (Noble Ebarb, LA), 1967-70 (6,702/180)
35.7 Isaac Bonds (Winslow, AZ), 1962-64
34.6 Paul Werle (Orrick, MO), 1986-88
33.7 Leon Wood (Santa Monica St. Monica, CA), 1977-79 (2,693/80)
33.1 Rod Watson (Memphis Westside, TN), 1982-85
32.6 Brian Hueblein (Pasadena Poly, CA), 1968-70 (1,859/57)
32.5 Tracy Murray (Glendora, CA), 1986-89 (3,053/94)

Per Game — Season
54.0 Bobby Joe Douglas (Marion, LA), 1979-80 (2,052/38)
53.7 Ervin Stepp (Phelps, KY), 1979-80
50.9 Bennie Fuller (Little Rock Arkansas School for the Deaf, AR),
1970-71
50.4 Kent Hyde (Onida, SD), 1953-54
49.8 Steve Farquhar (Calvary Baptist Christian, NJ), 1984-85
(1,494/30)
47.7 Tom McMillen (Mansfield, PA), 1969-70
47.3 Steve Blehm (Devils Lake North Dakota School for the Deaf, ND),
1970-71
47.2 Ervin Stepp (Phelps, KY), 1978-79
46.9 Larry Huston (Savannah, OH), 1954-55
46.8 Kelly Coleman (Wayland, KY), 1955-56

Years ago, I heard about a short little shooter (whose name is not important) heading into the 10th grade. I went to watch him play at a basketball camp that featured nothing but top-rated players, 16 and under. Most observers thought he'd be overwhelmed by the talent.

He played well in his first game, but his team trailed by 9 with 50 seconds to go. However, he then made three consecutive 3-pointers, plus a steal, and suddenly the game was tied. We all stood slack-jawed at what had just happened. But the player acted as if he expected that ending.

Two years later, he led the nation in scoring (50 ppg) and was a McDonald's All-American. Two years after that, as a college soph, he was a starter in the NCAA title game. The kid was easy to write off, but he just kept coming, because he knew he had "it." Those of us who saw that last-minute performance knew he'd end up being a difference-maker.

Sure reads like fiction. A high school player averaging 50 a game ....started as a sophomore in a title game
was easy to write off????????????????????????????????????????Sure sounds like Runyon too me!

I think the 50 pts per game has to be wrong.

I sent Thorpe an e-mail asking him to give up the name. I will let you know if he
answers me back or not. Still stumped by this one.

I searched the exact quote from the article...somebody on some other message board asked the question...and some other guy answered.

Its funny this kinda thing reminds me that the internets arent as vast as I think they are sometimes. Like yesterday I was pretty much thinking "Why is there not a website called sophomoreguardswhostartedintitlegames.com"
