I started listening to the Saloon again, when Norm van Lier died. B&B were not talking about it and when I went over to the Afternoon Saloon, they did a great job covering it, with very good guests. Since then, I have flipped back and forth. One thing I have noticed though, is that the show is taking far fewer calls from listeners these days. I have called just a couple times myself-less frequently than in the past, when danny Mac was on the show (was the show). But I wonder if there are far fewer people calling, or if Carmen just chooses not to put as many callers on the air? Anyone else notice the change?

less listeners=less callers

I played Little League baseball in '73 and '74 with a guy named Les Callers. Dandy little glove man at second base. :-)

Maybe Carm wants to take less callers so he has more of a chance to let everyone listening know how great he is. Im sorry but I dont really listen to this show that much anymore. Harry fucking kills me with his stupid jokes and Carmen just seems like he is a sports know it all. Yeah he knows it all but he doesnt understand that stuff doesnt fly in Chicago.

Mac- Get back to editing your book. :P

I listen less mostly because I've been a little more busy and away from computer at work. They've also been more strict about listening in the office, but I do catch it when I can. I think Carm does a fine job and I still enjoy The Afternoon Salon (misspell intended).

Chris. What. In the fuck. Are you talking about? Ever heard of Dan Bernstein? How's his show doing in the ratings?

Yeah, I was thinking that also, but I think for some reason he almost has that Howard Stern following. I know people that cant stand him, but they know all about his show. And the guy has been on the air and been successful at it for awhile. I just think he and Carmen are very different. Maybe Carm has to direct his attitude to the callers and leave Jurko and Harry alone.

i don't think Carm's as pretentious as you think though. I definitely think he is better as a second banana than a driver because he's actually too nice for the most part. He's a complimentary type of personality. I don't see him as much of a ranter. Unfortunately between Carmen, Jurko and Harry he is the best choice for driving the show.

I think he does pretty well as a driver but I think you're right in that he is better paired with a strong personality opposite him. I don't find him know it all-y or pretentious.

Funny you should mention Les - as I think my wife was a guy in a previous life, actually three men: Les Sex, Les Gratification and Les Happiness.

Boers/Bernstein is a show I haven't been able to ever get on board with. Every once in a while, I check them out and they have their moments. However, there have been times whether its them or some of their callers that make it a damn tough listen as it can be painful at times.

If ESPN let Mac go because of his on-air work and not so much of that fifth-year option, I can understand it because he constantly dated himself and all but ignored basketball although I personally miss him myself. It looked to me that with MJH that you had radio soul mates. Defalco guest hosted the saloon (for Mac) before his promotion and I liked his rapport with Jurko & Harry but it just isn't the same whether if there is less calls taken or not as I am just not feeling it now with those three. It surely is a show that is still in transition (I believe) and if CJH last past mid 2010, I'll be surprised.

I don't find him pretentious, I find him extremely defensive. The few times I've been able to listen, when someone challenges a Carm statement or opinion, he seems to fly off the handle, enough to make it must-miss radio for me.

As a big consumer of sports talk radio myself, I've noticed that ESPN Radio hosts RARELY take calls from Joe Fan on the national level. If you listen to "Mike & Mike" or "Tirico & Van Pelt", I think you'll know what I mean. There are also times on "The SCORE" where the hosts don't take calls in a specific segment. For instance, "Boers & Bernstein" don't take any calls at all when they do "The Second Half" at 4p Monday-Thursday...Something else to consider. Whenever there's a guest, regardless if it's ESPN Radio, WSCR 670, Sporting News Radio, or even FOX Sports Radio, they rarely take calls from fans like you & me as well, likely the result of time constraints with the guest on the phone.

Well, im sure there are time constraints. Im also sure the first time they take a caller for some hot college basketball chick, Grid will be calling with his best "Julie Sweicka Mouthbreathing" call.

I've met them. Moore Responsibility, Moore Offspring, and Les Time introduced us.

I can see that with Jurko and Harry. I didn't think he was like that with Silvy or Hood. I like him though.

You'll get more callers when NFL and MLB games matter again.
