It's almost like he can't help it. I can understand a bit of his disdain for the local media, however.

Degenerate Dave, Urlacher told Silvy not to get used to him coming on the show. Basically vowed to fade off into Bolivian after the interview.

Silvy said something about this being the first time he's talked to Urlacher in four years and I think Urlacher said "don't get used to it." I thought it was kinda funny, but Mac has an axe to grind with him for snubbing the media so it probably bothered him more than anybody.

So basically taking the same path as his career then - nice.

I also understand an athlete's/coach's disdain for the media. We're a pain in the backside. Too bad, however, the jockos aren't smart enough to realize they have the chance to USE media to better their image with the fans. Screw the media... but recognize the potential for strengthening your position with those who root for you and your team.

Urlacher could have been a God in this town for the rest of his life if he had realized being "Media Savvy" is the best PR he could have ever had. Idiot

He hates the local media. These are the guys, in his mind, who raked him over the coals for a lot on non-football related stuff. Paris Hilton, custody hearings, blue nail polish, etc. I understand why he feels the way he doies. I understand why it bothers you so much Mac. It would probably bother me too if I were in the media and he never gave me anything to use. I'm not saying he's right about this, but I just understand...

Mac rank the Cutler trade in terms of sports radio.

Biggest thing that ever happened?
Ditka firing?

Sucks that your on the radio for what 95% of the last 10-15 years and during the few months your off...biggest story ever breaks...and its during your old time slot.
Man even yesterday I found myself punching the button on Carm and harry the lesbian...that show is not good anymore

Krazy Ivan, I promise you my disappointment in guys like Urlacher has little to do with being in the media. I also am a fan and a sportsradio consumer. I'm one of those who prefers to LIKE the guys in my teams' colors.

Jurko told me the Packers did a very nice job training their players to "use" the media. My agent, Bryan Harlan, did an excellent job with that when he was the Bears PR man for 16 years. It's pretty simple math: treat people well and be accessible to your fans and you will be beloved .... provided you produce on the field.

Biggest day in Chicago sportsradio history... good one.

Can't remember the exact date... but in September of '93... the White Sox were on the brink of elimination in their ALCS with Toronto.... Cubs manager Jim Lefevre (sic?) was whacked... and oh by the way.... Jordan retired. All in the same day.

Ditka fired likely would be second.

Yesterday certainly would be in the proverbial team photo.

If the board's interest level is any indication... it appears W&S and B&B were the only "most stops" for sports fans yesterday. CJH section hasn't had anybody offer a thought on any of this since the show said good night Thursday evening.

Great topic for discussion. I think the day Walter Passed away was a very big day and I also remember the fire sale the White Sox had and the look on Mac's face at the remote when the news broke we traded half the team and the White Sox winning it all just years later was just awesome but Mac was not there to talk about it . :P :P

I think that was bigger news than the Sox winning it . You'll never live that down .

That's all that really matters, Mac. I don't care about athletes interviews for the most part. I want them to be good at what they do. People have been down on Urlacher lately because his skills have diminished. Not because he doesn't do interviews. 'You guys' care about that stuff. You can't expect the average fan to give to craps about the way an athlete treats the media.

Brian Urlacher didn't sound as surly this team talking to "Silvy", the Trib's David Haugh & ABC7's Mark Giangreco this morning. He sounded as if he welcomed the acquisition of Cutler & said the right things about Kyle Orton. I thought he sounded good.

Harry sucks...he always did but now its way more evident. I think Carmen deserves some blame too. He's just not good. Too arrogant. Theres no way he ever devolops a following or ALS with his personality. I actually think Silvy jurko and harry would be listenable.

YOU don't care. Cool. Let's take a look at some guys who produced and weren't well received.

Albert Belle is the best example. Two years with the White Sox... two pretty important franchise high-water marks: HRs in a season: 49. RBIs in a season: 152. Public's most dominant emotion about AB? Jagoff. Don't let the door hit you in the backside on your way out.

How about Pippen? Key member of six NBA championships. Arguably second-best player in Bulls history. Most indellible impression on Bulls/Chicago fans? "No tippin' Pippen." Not a good guy. Brandished unregistered firearm. "Wherever I go to play, I'll be rich." Bye, bye.

Mark Pryor: Went from beloved to loathed. Why? Became uncooperative and pissy.

Lance Briggs: Admired for his consistent play. Big reason why Bears went to Miami for SB XLI. What people say about him? Canvassing the area with unplanned for babies. Crashed car and filed a police report that it was stolen. Not as beloved as he could be and by a long shot. He's the best player on the Bears.

Brian Urlacher: You know the story.

On the other hand... many productive players, but not megastars are hugely popular when they are perceived to be "our kind of guys." "The kind of guy you want to have a beer with."

Examples: Kerry Wood. Aaron Rowand. John Paxson. Raymont Harris. Fred Freaking Hoiberg! Adam Burish of the Blackhawks is building steam as a likeable local jocko. And he's on the fourth line.

Good debates these past two days. Tomorrow, I'll be only a month away from May 4. Looking forward to that live mic.

Actually, it's ironic that you brought up Prior.
Didn't his transformation happen shortly after the Just Ducky apperance?

Of all people, Mac, I figured you'd be the one to understand how spending an evening with Harry can lead a person to become uncooperative and pissy.

Caught the end of it. It was a decent interview. It almost seemed like someone suggested that he do this one interview to get it out of the way before the season to make him seem like he's pals with the media. Urlacher still used the impersonal "you guys" term, as if the media are some sort of secret society of freaks (which in some cases are true). I'll give him some credit for coming on though. I liked that when they went to break that they edited Brian's blog spot to say: go to espnradio1000.com

Urlacher's disdain for the media seems to annoy the talking heads, but at Bears games there a lot of 54 jerseys and he gets a hell of an ovation. Personally I don't care if he talks to the media. I thing disdian for media, including sports media and the negative attitudes, is growing rapidly.
I thought it was a good interview and he seemed personable and cooperative.
