Let me get this straight: He was the SEC's all-time leading receiver, but says he couldn't beat out the other wideouts and get on the field because the Bears' playbook was too complicated? How in the hell does a doofus like this get admitted to Vanderbilt? His Wonderlic test must be amusing.

Angelo addressed this yesterday saying they asked him to learn all 3 receiver spots instead of focusing on just one. Maybe Angelo was just protecting him but I can see a rookie being overwhelmed by that. Whether its true or not, it is plausible.

I can't find any credible source to quote but most sites say Bennett (and Hester) scored an 18 which is okay for a receiver. I get what you are saying but might take a chance on somebody like Nicks who scored an 11. I'd really like to give the test to our coaching staff.

I read that this whole "couldn't learn the offense" is a pretense. The coaching staff values speed and experience. Bennett didn't have superior speed to that great group of veterans from last year and, therefore, did not see the field.

I tend to believe this in light of Lovie refusing to start Beekman at the end of 2007 after they were eliminated, even though Metcalf was clearly not in their future.

I simply refuse to believe that a guy who can be on his way to graduating from Vanderbilt cannot learn a sufficient amount of plays for a "motivated" coaching staff to get SOME playing time....especially as Rashied Davis dropped pass after pass after pass in critical situations.

I heard Mulligan this morning say that they asked Cutler about Bennett in the writer's meeting with him and Cutler said point blank, "I got Earl. Don't worry about him."

I don't know why but I just liked the sound of that, like Cutler will see to it that Bennett gets his shit together for what shit he may or may not have currently organized.

Yeah, I heard Angelo say that in his interview, too. I immediately started thinking that if this is the case, the damned coaching staff is arresting the development of our young players by throwing too much shit their way in their transition to the pro game. There has to be a reason (or several) to explain this regime's "difficulty" in facilitating the progress of the young players, and this would seem to be part of the problem...
