Since they show him so much during the game I was noticing something odd about him. I couldn't figure it out, but he didn't look like a coach. Then I finally figured it out. He, along with his assistant, when they run onto the court contesting something look like they undercover FBI agents or the secret service. Kind of a random thought, but they really look like they are running security over the Celtics bench.

I believe that is what most competent and legit coaching staffs look like.
I prefer that look to this one, which we have seen a few times this year.

Interesting thought Rick. I never considered either Pierce or Allen Hall of Famers.
I guess someone would really have to dig into the numbers a bit more to see what
it takes to get in. Allen averages 20.9 pts and 4.4 rebounds a game. Great 3 point
shooter and free throw shooter though. Pierce averages 22.9 pts and 6.3 rebounds a
game for his career. Obviously these guys aren't quite done with their careers but is
this enough to get in these days?

I believe Pierce made it off his finals performance last year. He was borderline but probably out before that. He's been an underrated player for most of his career.

Ray Allen is borderline in my opinion. He may be the best pure shooter in NBA history but it took him coming to a bigger market towards the end of his career to get the recognition. I have no doubt that if he played for Los Angeles or Chicago instead of Milwaukee and Seattle he would be a much bigger star. I think he'll be in the group of near hall of famers who gets nominated multiple times but never gets inducted.

No, it was a subtle shot at Doc Rivers. The only reason that I think he may not be in the bottom 5 is that the NBA has a bunch of bad coaches.

As to your "question"....greatest shooter, no, the Pistol was perhaps the greatest scorer ever. A scoring savant. Hero to all of the then vertically challenged little kids dying to get into the game.

As to Doc, I just always wonder why Phil gets credit for coaching(motivational) greatness, but KC Jones and now perhaps Doc always get the short end of the stick, despite rings?

Since we're on the subject, it seems that the other coaching greats (Passenger Riley and the guy posturing in San Antonio) are always spoken of in damn near reverential tones. Why? Not particularly X&O innovative; rosters laden with HOFs themselves; nowhere to be found in losing/subpar seasons---especially 'Riles'.

my dad regaled me once with stories about being a young man in chalmette giving into his divinity (especially at LSU), but even more stories about hating the asshole owner who took his mormon ass up to utah and the jazz with him.

Here it is IMO. Doc doesn't look like an athlete, a baller, or now even a coach. I've met Doc (Button 48 I know), like him alot, but would I pick him out as an elite athlete, no. Does he have the BS intensity/slime of a coach, no. Just kind of a regular guy that got good by practicing(coaching) in the same mundane, dull way every day.

I think its his suit choice and the white shirt, and they way it flies open when he throws his arms up in protest. He reminds me of the FBI guy from Harold and Kumar 2 for some reason.

You really need to hear the stories of the other NBA players of that era then...talk about getting "into" the divinity....alright But, like your dad, but as a yute I began my disgust for all things Utah with that. Never seen the movie. I got the premise of the first one having gone to school in the south(and looking forward to Elizabethtown, KY on every drive north ), but otherwise I can't relate.

But, thinking about it, you may have a point. His suits always look off the rack, ill-cut and a bit stiff. Agent-style.

thing is, this is why my dad gets so tight about the saints whenever a move is mentioned. there's a provincialism down there that is almost unmatched anywhere else. it's almost scary how possessive new orleans can be. but oh so sexy...

man when my dad comes to visit this summer we gotta make something happen where you two can talk. my dad grew up a sox fan because he was born on the south side of chicago. i'm thinking he's a generation or two older than you but perhaps not--and i think you two'd have a lot to talk about. I completely agree with RR

I was one of Doc's biggest critics last season for awhile. The fact is he outcoached Phil Jackson(who really is living on reputation the past few years) last year in the Finals. He held his team together and went 12-2 down the stretch without KG. He has been instrumental in the development and maturization of Rondo as a player and person(although from what Ive seen/read he has a ways to go in both areas). I think you have to credit him a little bit along with KG in forging the Ubuntu environment in that locker room. He's a lousy in-game coach but nowadays theres a whole lot more to being a successful coach than just in-game stuff. Hes very good at managing personalities.

I will disagree with RR on Pops. IMO he's the best coach in the league and his team has never been laden with HOFers, just one. Robinson didnt count he was at the end of his rope and Manu and Tony Parker are very good but not HOFers.
