If this is true, Jim Hendry now has a chance to redeem himself for one of the few mistakes he has made in past years.

Derosa solves a ton of issues that the Cubs have right now and maybe the Indians will agree to a similar package in return for what they paid for Derosa?

With their bullpen troubles, maybe we can send them Patton or Ascanio or maybe dupe them into taking Kevin Gregg as Wood hasn't looked very good - not that Gregg has either, but I can hope can't I?

I know it would take more than 1 bullpen guy - but I would certainly open up the lines of communication here...

Who says he is on the trading block?

Or is this wishful thinking?

Rototimes.com is saying this is according to Jon Heyman of Sports Illustrated. I don't know how reputable a source Heyman is, but if it is even a remote possibility, I'm in.

DeRosa for GREGG?! Great idea, let's weaken the bullpen more...

Aren't we weakening the pen every time he throws? I hate Gregg and I would love to jettison him somewhere.

If Angel Guzman is legit, he moves to the 8th inning spot and Marmol closes. Marshall takes over in the 7th or situational - I think Gregg is absolutely horrid.

Why would they give up that much?? I'm sure they could get DeRosa for Koyie Hill or Bobby Scales (though it would be tough to part with one of those two).

based on Guzman's record, he will be hurt by June. Gregg is a decent closer. His record shows he will be fine. The last thing they need to do is get rid of a closer and Cleveland wouldn't want him anyways. Trading for DeRosa is fine, but jettison some of your position players.

Didn't Gregg lead the league in blown saves last year? He hasn't been particularly effective here either. If we can get something for him, do it. Marshall has GOT to be in the bullpen as well, becasue Cotts couldn't pitch his way out of a paper bag right now, and that's pretty much been the story of neil cotts.

I'm with you DS - I didn't like Gregg when we got him - I still don't like him and probably never will. While I agree Cleveland probably doesn't want him either it might not be a total miseffort to try to package him up with a positional player or two to reacquire Derosa.

Marshall has to be in the pen - agreed. I don't know if Wells is the long term answer but Marshall has to be moved. Cotts is useless.

After last night, they'll probably give us back Kerry Wood too.

if you can get another closer for him, then ok. Otherwise you weaken the bullpen. Even if Gregg has been bad so far, he's still better than the guys left in the minors.

Does anyone here think Derosa is the cub fan version of Aaron Rowand? Yes, he did have a couple of decent years here, but would they not win the division without him? I think Cubs fans are overvaluing him just a tad.

I think it's hard to overvalue 140 hits 21 HR 87 Ribbies and a .376 OBP coupled with multiple position defensive versitility.

In fact, I think he's been undervalued.

DeRosa can play any position and he hits well. I don't think he's Aaron Rowand and I think the Cubs would be far better off with him at 3rd or 2nd. When Soriano inevitably gets injured and Bradley does as well, the Cubs will regret not having a DeRosa type. It's made worse by the absolutely cringe-inducing pickup of Aaron Miles, who is absolutely worthless.

Keith Law, who I respect as an analyst, was apalled at the Cubs signing of Gregg. Says...Not only is he not a closer...hes not an 8th inning guy...hes an arm for the bullpen might be effective in middle relief.

Gregg is garbage.

he's in the AL. that would change should he come back to the NL and a hitters park.

perhaps, but what you are doing there is taking the guys best year ever as a MLB player and holding it as his norm. i dont think anyone can say that is what you can expect from him year in and year out.

The White Sox, if they could find a way to dump some money back on the Indians, should be interested as well considering the play of Josh Fields, not to mention Chris Getz at 2B.

No, just last year's stats. I'm not holding it as the norm, but rather using that as a basis for the next players VORP. The VORP is negative at his position this year. So far.

I think the question we have to consider is would Derosa be an upgrade to the garbage the Cubs are throwing out there now and I think the answer is a resounding yes.

As to what we would have to give to get him I threw out Gregg as a possibility not a definite - but I'd love to move him because I think he is hot garbage.

Cleveland according to the article, is looking for pitching - I am not sure if that is starting or relief.

Maybe they can send back the 3 pitchers they received in the original deal, or they still holding them for the Jake Peavy deal??

You will have to ask Tommy Waddle what hot garbage is - one of his famous lines...

Just because he can play multiple positions doesn't mean he's good at them.

I'm not saying he was great, I'm not saying he's going to the HOF, hell I'm not even saying he's decent, but he's better than what we have. Plus dudes, come on he can hit.

Exactly. He's certainly better than the current options at 3rd.
