Okay, I do understand that Beckham is a big boy and if one can't take the heat, he/she should get out of the kitchen.

However, it seems to me Ozzie is not handling Beckham's promotion appropriately. He's been sarcastic in reacting to the love affair with Beckham's Savior-like status. He doesn't think Beckham should have been promoted and basically has let his feelings known.

To me, that is detrimental to Beckham. How is this kid going to react when he knows his coach has no confidence in him?

Could it be Ozzie is taking the pressure off of Beckham by being a butthole here? Or does Ozzie truly feel that the only reason GB is playing is because Kenny forced his hand and this is how Ozzie is showing his disdain for the situation?

   That's what Ozzie calls him, Panther. I did have a Baconator at Wendy's this afternoon for lunch. Anyway, I think if you read between the lines, Ozzie's not exactly thrilled that Gordon Beckham was recalled following the 5-3 White Sox loss to the woeful A's at U.S. Cellular Field after telling anyone who would listen that Beckham's not as ready for the majors as people think. I didn't understand the standing ovation Sox fans gave Beckham when he stepped up to the plate for the first time in his Sox career Thursday afternoon, and since his call-up, he's yet to get his first official hit of any kind in the majors. I also think there seems to be a clash regarding where Beckham will play. Guillen wants to play Beckham at his natural position of shortstop, third base & second base, but General Manager Kenny Williams wants to play Gordon at third almost exclusively. I'm not so sure Beckham's future is at third to be honest with you. While he played there at Triple "AAA" Charlotte before his call-up, that's NOT where he played during the Arizona Cactus League. Beckham played second base and I remember TV analyst Steve Stone comparing Beckham to the recently retired Jeff Kent. Now that he's here, Beckham should be a utility man for the immediate future. Play him at third and Chris Getz at second base, plus play Joshua Fields at third & Beckham at second until you have a better idea where Gordon is better suited...

I was trying to be thorough, RFDC. The bottom line is Ozzie's not happy that Gordon Beckham is here, let alone how he's going to be used.

Thanks SHARK, I appreciate your ability to summarize concisely.

Duely noted, Panther. Out of respect for you, Beckham will now be referred to as "Bacon."

Since you are a new poster around here, let me help you out with something. You should have absolutely NO respect for Panther Pussy. Thanks.

Having respect for "Panther Pussy" is considered bestiality, isn't it? I think it's against the law. Thanks.

SHARK, if you're going to be considered an encyclopedia on this board, at least stick to the facts. By all accounts, Guillen isn't upset that Beckham's up for any other reason other than the press coverage.

I imagine there is some difference between public statements and private statements. I would think Ozzie has had some face to face contact with the kid and anything said there would be much more important to him than what Ozzie says to the press.

I think it's not just the hype for Gordon Beckham that Ozzie's less than pleased about. He didn't want Beckham up here this soon. I also don't think he wants to strictly play the new #15 at third...Also, Beckham is NOT in the starting lineup for Game 1 of this day-night DH vs. Detroit.

Ozzie must have been sleeping during spring training when Bacon was hitting the cover off of the ball while all the other 2B and 3B couldn't hit their way out og a wet paper bag.

Gloopan, I don't buy it for a second. They only drafted Gordon Beckham with their #1 pick only a season ago in the MLB Amateur Draft, and it's a lot to ask of the #1 pick to make the big club right away. Ozzie at that time thought guys like Joshua Fields at third and Chris Getz at second were better equipped to make the big club coming out of Spring Training. Unlike the NFL & NBA, the MLB Draft is a lot harder to figure out. #1 picks in baseball don't always pan out, and it's not always an exact science.

If you watched any significant amount of spring training, Bacon looked better than Nix, Fields, Bettencourt, et. al. combined.

Yeah, against pitchers with numbers in the 80s and 90s.

Both Getz and Nix tore the cover off the ball with Nix being praised as the best fielding IF in camp. He later tore it up in a rehab assignment. Fields had an excellent spring.
