Sporting News has him 20th??????????
Sean Payton #6??? The same guy who lost to Smith in the playoffs.
Some good numbers backing Lovie in this article.

Shouldn't care, but it is interesting reading.

Juaron (21-27, no playoffs in Buffalo)? Please.

I think the list is pretty stupid but everyone's got their own opinions. Brad Childress at 11 is just a joke. McCarthy shouldnt be ranked ahead of Lovie, I dont see how anyone could make an argument for that.

I have a feeling that there's an almost direct correlation between wins last season and these rankings, and very little else.

Oh and Sean Payton ranking FAIL.

Yeah, is that the same Sean Payton that came here a few years ago in the playoffs and got whipped by Lovie... when the whole world was behind New Orleans and the media was escorting them to the Superbowl, Lovie beat him and his wonderboy Reggie Bush, and did it with Rex Grossman at QB.

And Singletary?? 14th?? LOL! Dick Jauron???

This list is, as Christian Bale would say, AMATEUR!

And good article by Haugh to point out the problems with the list.

I wolUd say that The Sporting News was generous and gave Lovie the benefit of the doubt.
I seriously think the guy is in way over his head.
Lovies next head coaching job will be in NCAA.

Lovie is WAY better than 20 and Payton is WAY worse than his spot.

When it comes to Football and leadership, after watching a few Bears games Lovie's deficiencies as a head coach are obvious. Terrible clock Management, poor use of time outs, isn't involved in the game...he stands there on the sidelines frozed like a Deer in headlights, constantly watching replays on the jumbo tron...and you never ever see Lovie talking with anyone on the sidelines during a game. You also never ever see him talking into the microfone on his headset. I have talked with Doug, OB, Hampton, and a few other ex players who have played a few more NFL games than I, and they are all of the opinion that Lovie is a joke.
Remember that Lovie was the Bears second choice.
He is gone when his contract is up.

Holy shit, are you the same guy who called B&B last fall and bitched about this?

To have Jauron, Childress, Turner, Philips and McCarthy ahead of Lovie is ignorant.

Nope. Wasn't me. But it's pretty obvious to anyone who watches a Bears game. I mean why wear a headset with a microfone if all your going to do is listen to dumbasses like Babich & Turner call the game? For God sake, he must have something to say...to someone every once in a while, no? At least act like your in charge and know what the fuck is going on!

I think Lovie sucks, not for not screaming and yelling. Some of his guys and his friends are putrid failures. I find his unwillingness to make adjustments unforgiveable. He reminds me a little of John Shoop. He's not top 10, I'd say 15-20 is about right.

I would take Lovie over Phillips and Turner anyday.

What adjustments... do you mean in-game adjustments? I don't know, I've always thought that was the lament of every fan of every team, every year. If your team isn't as good as the other team, adjustments usually aren't enough to win. Lipstick on a pig and all that.

He sucks ass at developing players. I think Hester should be further along in his development and I don't see how Bennett did not catch a ball last year despite the shitty WR core. The defense has regressed. He should have done something about Babich if not publically then privately last year. The offensive line and safeties were not good enough to be running the defense they way they were.

I have no specific examples of in game adjustments but I'm sure I could find them because I remember yelling at the TV..."Hey you fuckers tried that all first half and it didn't work." He has a plan and sticks to it.

So can you refute my observations about Lovie? Or is your debate tactic to just call people names? You gotta be a member of the Bernsey ALS, right?

Your observations about Lovie are just completely ridiculous. No one is a good or bad coach based on talking into the headset. That is just dumb.

Lovie has a better record over the last few years that the majority of other head coaches in the league right now. He has taken a team to the Superbowl, something many other coaches, even good coaches have never done. Is he the best coach in the league? No. But he is an above average coach and I think he has done enough to continue to coach here.

You didnt convince me. When you look at Lovie's personel decisions, I believe that it is he who is football stupid. The QB fiascos...Rex is our QB... not playing youngerr players like Earl Bennett while continuing to play a stiffs like Rasheed freaking Davis or Brandon Lloyd...signing Adam Archuletta annd continuing to play him as he gets fucking torched every week...it just goes on and on and on.

I am just sick and tired of people accepting medicrity with the Bears. Both Jauron & Lovie were the Bears second choice. But now that we finally have a pro bowl QB, I hope that someday soon the Bears will invest in tier 1 coaches instead of scrubs like Ron Turner, Bob Babich, Pep Hamilton, & Lovie Smith. How many of these guys could get hired in the same position by another team? Zero...none...nada...

I don't think Hester has ever been a receiver in his life until the Bears attempted conversion. And I'm not he really has the wherewithal to do it. He also hasn't had a QB that can get him the ball. Maybe '09 will be different; we'll see. As far as Bennett, that is a mystery. Maybe we'll find out he's just really bad. Don't know yet.

Spaulding wrote:

This is true. They (understandably) tried to keep the Superbowl D together, but they're getting old and broken. One of those damned if you do, damned if you don't things. Hendry and Piniella are hated for making changes to a great team. Lovie is hated for trying to keep one together.

Spaulding wrote:

What do you mean... firing him or demoting him? Well, he did during the offseason, and I'm not sure it's NFL protocol to bounce people mid-season. Not that he couldn't, but, I think that would have been pretty dramatic.

Spaulding wrote:

Well, again, if your team is limited, there's only so much you can do. Yeah teams adjusted to Orton, but that doesn't mean you can adjust him into being Peyton Manning. There's only so many plays you can run. Trickery only goes so far.

Spaulding wrote:

Ah, coaching is a thankless job indeed! If you stick to your plan and win, you're persistent! If you stick to your plan and lose, you're stubborn.

He's the head coach! He stood behind a QB that Women & Children recognised as a horrible player. Do you think Jerry told Lovie that he had to play Rex?

Who's accepting mediocrity? The Bears were in the Superbowl two years ago. They scored a great draft pick at RB in Forte. They scored the best available player this past off-season, at QB.
