Ok,in the early days of baseball,batting helmets did not exist.
Men were men & wore the soft cap up to the plate.

Not sure on the helmet question. Anyone playing in 1971 or before were
grandfathered in. Ron Santo was the first player in MLB to wear a helmet
with an ear flap on it interestingly enough.
