Saw this tonight with the wife.
This movie would make a great gift for a Prime minister.

So I first tried to find a teenage son or daughter to bring along with me, but then I thought better of it.

"The Hangover" did look a lot like "Very Bad Things"--but they are two completely different movies. Where "Very Bad Things" is a dark comedy about the depravity of humanity (who knew Peter Berg was so deep?), "The Hangover" is a light screwball comedy that, while it does have some "shock" moments, never lets up its shiny disposition that you should have fun with it. It's a misadventure.

And, probably one that I should've encountered sometime in my life while drunkenly wandering the streets of the south side of Chicago. But somehow, by unbelievable luck--I survived without having to go through the ordeals these poor guys have to. And "The Hangover" is everybody's worst nightmare come true when you go balls out and get wasted--and in a town like Vegas, so much can happen.

So it was, from the start, a win-win situation, as long as the writers realized how much material they had to work with. I think they got it. I think there could have been more, but I think they got enough of it.

This is helped in large part to Zach Galifianakis's deadpan, strange, and off-the-wall performance where there's just so much honesty in his eyes, you can't help but laugh at everything he says and does. There are also just some laugh out loud moments in the film, some of which you feel guilty laughing about.

Overall the movie does work, but I have to gripe about a few things that didn't work for me: what was the point of the car meaning so much to the dad? It didn't add any stakes as we all are aware the car was pretty valuable--and, it was already stated in the beginning that he didn't want anybody driving it but Doug. It just seemed unnecessary for the repeated lines of "Dad is going to be so mad about the car!". Didn't add anything at all. But that's small, it didn't annoy me. The chicken. What was with the chicken? It wasn't even a funny prop. The tiger at least had a pay off and was amusing. I didn't buy the connection Stu made with ruffies having to do with where Doug was. That was weak to me.

But the biggest problem I had was the ending. Once they found Doug, that was it. There was nothing left on the table. It was a huge dip in the energy of the film, and I just felt that the whole wedding sequence was severely drawn out. And the wedding band? Um...yeah--we KINDA saw that in..."Old School"? It was eye-roll inducing to say the least. I understand they wanted to conclude stuff with Stu and his girlfriend but they could've done that in a much quicker way. We don't care enough about these characters to sit through the ceremonies. Once they had found Doug, and they were headed back to the wedding, you need to end the movie in 5 minutes or less.

Going back to the characters for a moment--while misadventures don't often allow for a lot of character development, because they wanted to treat this as sort of a buddy movie as well as a screwball comedy, it didn't work as well because the characters were very thinly drawn. It was as though they just borrowed stereotypes from other movies about bachelor parties and gave them the run-of-the-mill standard personalities. And the weird thing was, they didn't even act out accordingly a lot of the time. Because Allen (Zach) was such a strong presence, the other characters seemed to spend most of their time just trying to figure him out rather than being who they were. And Doug was a complete non-entity. We had no idea why these guys were friends to begin with. They could've used a scene or two to establish their history.

The ending credits were probably the funniest part, and that's not exactly the best time to have the biggest laughs. But I will give credit--they were hysterical.

Overall, it's a good time and it's a fun movie. Yes, obviously when you break it down, it falls a part a little bit more. But I've laid out stuff in this review that's really not even necessary--but I couldn't get it off my mind. Don't worry, I am recommending this film (yeah I know, aren't I important?!?) and I did enjoy it. But I had to call out the weaknesses.

:D :D :D out of :D :D :D :D

Oh there's more: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1411697/

and regarding the chicken - WHY was the chicken in the room, we never got an explanation for that.

I very much agree with this. The whole is much more than the sum of its parts. It doesn't have that many quotable lines, the plot is really lacking (but no surprise there), with the exception of your namesake, there's no really great acting parts ... yet I feel I will be watching this again in 5 years and laughing at the same parts over and over.

Saw it last night, and the only question I had was how much did the Las Vegas Bureau of Tourism put up to have this film made? Questions about where the chicken came from are just about as comical as the photos running with the credits - it's not something that needs to be unpacked, it just is.

I don't think there's much to discuss here, though. The performances were pretty great - I actually thought Ed Helms stole the show - and the plot had just enough going for it to keep things interesting. If you want to see Zack Galifinakis (and John C. Reilly) at his (/their) best, check out Tim & Eric Awesome Show on Adult Swim.

i just thought the chicken was uninspired. why not have a crazier animal, like an emu, running around? if you're going for absurdity...be absurd.

See emu would be too crazy. What made this movie great is just right balance. They already had a tiger and a makeshift sex swing in the room. The we learned that a mattress was missing. Bringing the entire Africa section of the zoo would have made it way over the top. Chicken was akin to adding sugar to a savory sauce to enhance the flavor profile.

i don't want to get into an argument about something as little as this because it wasn't like it bothered me that much; i just thought the chicken was lame. it didn't make me laugh at all, and it added nothing. there were spots in the movie that were misses, and this was one of them. but the overall product worked.

My god there is alot of bitching in this thread over something stupid like chickens. I would never want to watch a movie with half of you guys complaining about why the chicken was in the movie. Who fucking cares, its a chicken.

...and why didn't they explain why the guy can't be around schools or Chuck E Cheese.

Good movie. Not great, but good. I'd put it in the category of Old School but well below Superbad. Not much originality but still funny.

IMHO, this movie is damned hilarious! I just saw it last night with a young lady that I'm trying to get something goin' with (I obviously wouldn't bring her on our first date, though, haha) - I couldn't believe that she was down with seeing it in the first place, but she actually was laughing as hard as I was - I think I've got a keeper here if I don't screw it up...

Haha, no - this is one that I'm interested in for more than just a roll in the hay - I'll probably be left wondering what that would've been like again...Then again, I think this chick can keep my mind off of the co-worker...

Ok, sounds good. If she has a similar sense of humor you are already off to a nice start.

Thats was good, my favorite part/line of the whole movie was the "Wolfpack of one" speech. I lost it. I thought you nailed all the criticisms as usual but I definitely think I liked the movie alot more than you did. But I was also semi-drunk so it might have added to the comedy. The only criticism I disagree with was the Old School wedding singer. The second they showed him I burst out laughing.

Just saw this movie last night, pretty far overdue.

I watched this again last weekend, and I think the funniest line of the movie was one I didn't even catch the first time around. Its when the three of them are carrying the baby, walking to Heather Graham's place, and Allen says:

"Its got Ted Danson, Magnum PI, and that Jewish actor..."

I finally saw this last week. Thought it was good, but could've been a lot better. Thought the decision to show everything Lost style in flashbacks was a poor choice and the movie would've been better if they actually showed what happened the night before. When they showed the hotel room at the beginning and it was all trashed I assumed we would get to see what exactly happened, but instead they didn't bother to explain a lot of it.

And they totally under utilized the asian comedy actor (forgot his name)...he's hilarious and they should've shown more of him.

And the end was really stupid....he's been on the roof the whole time? Ghey.

Ghey.

I couldnt disagree with you more if I tried. I loved the fact that they got so drunk they couldnt remember anything(drugged too). The whole basis of the movie was them trying to find doug.

I wanted to kill the asian comedy guy your talking about. I thought he almost ruined the film. He annoys the piss out of me.

The ending did suck, but overall I thought the movie was great.
