Gerald must have been the one who vouched for trading DeRosa and signing Bradley.

A desperate move that will accomplish nothing. Hendry should be fired for assembling this poorly constructed bunch of baseball stiffs.
He nothing but a boob with a big checkbook.

These guys will continue to fucking blow.

As a Manager or Coach, whether in business or sports, when your department performs poorly, you should lose your job. I commend the Cubs for taking action.

Doesn't that mean that Hendry should lose his job as well?

I think this is over-reaction to some players under preforming, and their best hitter being injured...

Does he get credit for last years teams stat's?
This was a gutless move by an organization who has
a tired, disgusted manager that the players are not
responding to. Time to bring in an angry, old guy:

Dumbass.

Even if Bowa was a good fit here (he's not), I'm sure he's quite comfortable coaching 3rd base for Torre and the Dodgers.

It's not gonna happen, but do you really think that, if offered the job, he would turn it down because he enjoys his job as a third base coach so much?

Ryne Sandberg is already lined up as the next Manager of the Cubs.
I hope it happens this year.

Quite possibly, he would. Hell, I might even turn down the job of managing these stiffs. They fucking blow.

yes I am. I assume you were asking Greg Walker though. Ha.

They had to make this move. Had to. The problem with Hendry is that there is no owner he is responsible to. Crane Kenney is not going to do anything...this sale (no sale) is F'n us on many levels.

I'm a Sandberg fan, but hes not ready. Last time I looked, Tennessee had a horrible record, and had lost 10 in a row.

Agree, been saying this for a month now. The Fukudome, Bradley, and Miles signings alone gets him fired.

If Lou is done anytime in the near future, I would rather have Brenly than Sandberg. Sandberg will have his shot, but he still needs some time to fine tune his skills.

Come on. This was long past due. I won't go as far as to say things will turn around for this team, but, the fact is, their approach to hitting lo these many years has royally sucked. Hack away, hack away, hack away. Do they really think other teams don't notice this?

Seriously, nobody notices how the opposing pitchers never, never give in to the Cubs hitters? In any count? There is no point to ever throw them a strike. So, they don't. Not too difficult to figure out from there why it becomes so difficult to make consistent solid contact with the baseball.

I'd like to hear from the scouts working for the '07 Diamondbacks and '08 Dodgers and learn their opinion on the Cubs' approach at the plate. Based on those teams' performances against said offense, I'd say they figured it out pretty good. And so has the rest of the league.

I have no idea what the hitting philosophy will be from here on out. I pray the hack hack hack philosophy is gone for good. We'll see.

As to last year's success... maybe someone can help me find the quotes, but I am positive that there were at least two occasions (wasn't that a song from the 80s?) where Perry disavowed his involvement with the Cubs newfound patience at the plate in the first half of last season... the very patience that produced the top hitting team in the league. I swear he was quoted as saying something similar to "I'd rather see them more aggressive", and I also think Lou or someone was quoted as saying "I know Perry would rather see them swinging more rather than going deep into counts".

So no, I will not bemoan this move. As I've said many times, this team is easily handled by opposing pitchers and scouts that know how to approach them.

And also, while I'm glad DeRosa is having a great year and I really like him as a player, he is fast becoming the Aaron Rowand "fire and passion" legend of the North side. Is there any evidence that says, if he were still here, he would be carrying this team? Wasn't he part of the '07 playoff team that was stymied? Wasn't he part of the '08 playoff team that was stymied? Wasn't he part of the '07 team that had several offensive slumps similar to this one? Wasn't he part of the '08 offense that struggled during the interleague stretch? Come on. He should be glad he's gone, because I suspect that if he were still here, his numbers would be below-par just like everyone else in the lineup.

Maybe things will not get better from this point on, but I promise you this, they won't get any worse (talking offensively here).

Looks like Matty was right all along. Piniella is gone after this year no matter what.

I would not say that DeRosa would have prevented the mass problems that the offense has suffered through since Aramis Ramirez's injury. But, he would have provided a QUALITY back-up at that position. Something they went into 2009 without. That was a mistake. He would have hit for a better average and played better defense that the guys who have been trotted out there and Fontenot would have come off the bench to play 2nd (where he is much better) while DeRosa shifted to 3rd. That would have been far better. I doubt he was glad to be traded. He had the chance to go to several clubs as a free agent. He chose Chicago, had his best year here, went to the post-season on a team that won an NL best 97 games and was a media favorite. I'm guessing that his endorsement opportunities are greater in Chicago than they might be in Cleveland too. No, I highly doubt that he is glad to be gone.

I am going a little off track here, but whenever there is a free agent looking to play for a team in Chicago vs a smaller market team, I always here about how this player could make more in endorsements in Chicago and that in turn they could take less money here and make it up in endorsements.

But is this really true? I don't remember any commercials featuring Derosa...how many cubs do you see with commercials? Or Sox, Bulls, Blackhawks, Bears?

You win a championship, sure they may be endorsement opportunities, but I think the riches someone might gather in this city thru commericials or whatever is overblown.

Not missing Gerald Perry much so far... :)

Oh I know, I just meant that I doubt he would have 13 HR and 49 RBI if he was in the middle of this lineup, that's all. All things considered I'm sure he'd rather still be here.

Whether it's coincidence or not, I can't say, but since the change in the batting coach was made, the offense has improved rather significantly. Then again, the pitching they have faced in the past few days-particularly after the starters were removed from the games, have not been very good.
