I agree, but even among the good posters, the consensus is strongly pro-Gordon.

Is Gordon really significantly better than JR Smith? Why do people wanna give him 2x more money?

I really don't see anything Gordon does that J.R. Smith can't...and Smith is 3 inches taller.

He's significantly better than Smith, IMO. But Gordon still has his flaws. I think the timing is the worst part of all this. You're talking about signing Gordon to a pretty large contract at a time when you don't know what your roster will look like by the time you expect to compete for a championship (ie, 2+ years out).

I agree. Gordon has a better midrange jumper and is better at shooting contested shots despite being shorter. Thats really about it. Both of them can be really good or bad when driving to the basket, and are exceptional three point shooters. Instant offense off the bench. Neither tries to create open looks for others or play any kind of defense.

At the end of the day, Gordon averages 21 points per game. Smith averages less points over less minutes, but then, there's a reason he gets less minutes.

His coach is smart enough to use him most effectively? Nevermind, George Karl doesnt do anything smart or effectively. But neither should be starters, both should get 25-30 minutes a game.

Chicago Bulls guard Ben Gordon(notes) and Milwaukee Bucks forward Charlie Villanueva(notes) flew to Detroit on Wednesday morning for a mid-day meeting with team president Joe Dumars and indications are both are moving rapidly toward deals with the Detroit Pistons, league and sources close to the two players told Yahoo! Sports.

Gordon, a restricted free agent, and Villanueva, who’s unrestricted, would be significant strikes on the first full day of NBA free agency.

Gordon and Villanueva have history together, and are good friends. They played for the University of Connecticut, although never together. The Pistons have nearly $20 million in salary-cap space and it’s believed that the offers to these two players would come close to expending that money.

The Bulls would have a chance to match a Detroit offer to Gordon, but league sources believe Chicago has its limits on how far it’ll go to keep the guard, who scored 20 points a game last season. Gordon turned down a $54 million extension last summer.

If the Bulls want to make any real improvement in 2010, they better let Ben walk. I can stomach one more mediocre year if it means we can contend for 3-5 years after that. Ben Gordon is a nice player, but will never lead a team to the finals. Let him walk...

Boy, oh boy, the RealGM Gordon ALS is in full-on panic mode. Honestly, if you'd been in a coma for the last decade, and you read some of those posts, you'd bet the house that the Gordon was Jordan's second coming. I'm so irritated over what I've read, I no longer believe I'm able to assess the situation in an unbiased manner: a large and rapidly-growing portion of me desires nothing more than to see Gordon sign with the Pistons just to grieve those retarded souls. Shit, I half hope the Pistons sign Gordon to some bargain offer, and the Bulls inexplicably fail to even match it.

Im assuming you slept through last year's playoffs. Specifically the NBA Finals. Ray Allen is an above average defender, especially on SG's who dont have a post-up game. Kobe does have one and wasnt smart enough to use it and got hounded all series long by Ray.

Even this year when him and Gordon were battling all series long Gordon was getting very contested shots and making "WOW" plays. Ray was schooling Gordon on moving without the ball and got many more uncontested shots, especially the clutch ones down the stretch.

Chasing guys around screens isn't good defense. Even BG was able to run around screens with Ray this year and everyone knows he is a horrible defender. Maybe our definition of good defense is different. I think Pierce is a good defender and I don't think Ray Allen is in his class.

Im not talking about simply running around screens, although I disagree(not surprisingly). When does Gordon effectively run around screens? Ray Allen's clutch shot clinic in that series was partially due to the fact that he had wide open looks by 12-18 inch margins simply because Gordon couldnt chase him around screens, actually Kirk couldnt either effectively and I think he's a decent defender. Besides that Ray had a hand in Kobe's face Battier-style alot of the times, he played Kobe's game of grabbing jerseys and constantly poking at him and bothering him. Was it not clear that series that Kobe was visibly frustrated?

The propper way to fight through screens is more than just the defender chasing the runner. The defender to the screener has to help the chaser out. The best defender will always find himself behind the 8 ball if he is constantly being screened for. That is what we saw with Ray against the Bulls. The Celtics ran set plays where you would see Ray run through multiple screens. It is unfair to place all of the responsibility on Gordon to stop Ray.

Terry is spot on today. I know there are a few dopes in the media that think the Bulls should re-sign Ben Gordon, but who else is on the bandwagon? I haven't heard much support for keeping him around. I know the orginization is giving their typical lip service about keeping a player around (because that's what they are supposed to do), but is anyone on the radio advocating it?

I'm not so sure Ben Gordon's going to be wearing a Bulls' uniform much longer. When you consider Luol Deng's contract, the rising play of John Salmons, and the fact Uncle Jerry wants nothing to do with the NBA's luxury tax, I think BG's as good as gone.

For this team I'd rather have Hinrich than Gordon. That fucking Deng signing. Hedo would look very good right now.

I agree with everything Terry and Dan said today, but now the Bulls need to figure out who is that clutch guy for the shot at the buzzer. Right now all you have is Rose taking someone off the dribble going to the basket.

I can't believe they gave him $11M/year. I was worried that this was all a ploy by Dumars to put up a smoke screen like they were going to sign Ben to a big deal, and then the Bulls would match and then it would kill their cap space. Apparently, Dumars is really dumb.

Not only that, but he'd be 2 years closer to his next veteran payday instead of starting the clock right now. Instead, he played for $4.9m and $6.4m when he could have made nearly double that amount.

I know they just let the #3 pick walk away for nothing. As it turns out, they signed the wrong guy to big money.
That said, I'm glad they didn't overpay for Ben. He is a great scorer and nothing else. They can find other 2 guards in this league that can score. I don't think this team will struggle to put points on the board. The one thing that they do get by not signing him is cap space. Now they can make a move for Bosh and not worry about the luxury tax.

Or, instead of Salmons, they could throw in Tim Thomas, so Phoenix gets 4 expiring deals.
Then, Phoenix would have about $50 Million in expiring deals coming off the books after this year. They could sign two max guys and still be under the cap. I think.

No, word is, they plan on having Gordon come off the bench. Gordon doesn't want to come off the bench... unless you pay him a shit load of money.
