He actually said that Jim Edmonds was a better defensive center fielder than Andruw Jones, who is younger and has as many gold gloves.

It all depends on how the robot phrased it. If he said overall in a career I will agree with him. If he said right now--this season--he is stupid. Edmonds makes great catches. But he doesn't have the speed he once had. His great catches today would be routine for Jones. You have to take the younger Jones now.

I don't think it matters how old Edmonds is. Andruw Jones is considered one of the g-o-a-t. He acted like it wasn't even a contest.

'Factually speaking' Jones is better.

.990 fielding avg. vs. .989

And Jones is on pace to have way more assists than Edmonds currently has

Edmonds defensive stats

Jones defensive stats

Pretty hard to make a fair comparison based upon the 'total numbers' as Edmunds played some at first base.

I hate Edmonds. You'll also note his surge in power numbers when he joined Tony LaRussa's team. Kind of interesting when you consider that McGwire and Canseco also played for LaRussa.

I love Edmunds but I don't think there has been a time when both he and Jones were both MLB players that Jones was not the superior fielder.

Edmunds has a lot of the same characteristics as Rowand. His bad reads require great catches.

Please don't compare these two gd, no matter what stats you may have to back them up - at least Rowand doesn't wear eye-liner.

I think you're selling Edmunds short. In his prime he was much better then Rowand. He got better jumps then Aaron. He could jump higher then Rowand so he robbed more home runs and made more great diving catches. He's in his mid 30's now so he's just not the player he was and Jones is much better now.

He's perfected the art of making an easy catch look hard by getting late jumps and performing unnecessary flops, dives, and wall crashes. Don't get me wrong, he's a great fielder, but he's also part showboat/circus act.

Ok fine. Whatever. I think there is a better question to be asked. Who was better in their prime? Jeff Dickerson or C-3PO?

gold gloves are terrible barometers of defensive abilities.

As is evidenced by the year that Palmeiro won the Gold Glove when he was predominantly the DH.

Dickerson's dog shit.

Hmmm...

Let me think...

Nothing to add to that.
