He was the speaker at northwestern's school of music graduation this past saturday, and after the ceremony I was able to shake his hand. His speech wasn't an actually a speech, but inspirational statements that others in his profession have said to him throughout his life. My favorite was "don't apologize when you miss a note, the note doesn't feel anything, the note doesn't care..." As someone who often plays his instrument poorly, I was taken aback by this... what a cool cat.

Yeah, he's not that famous compared to to other musicians, but he is a Grammy award winning jazz, and classical musician... he plays the trumpet.

No, that would have been Wynton's brother Branford who plays the saxophone and made a lot of coin in Sting's first post-Police project. However, if I recall correctly, Wynton played the national anthem before Superbowl XX.

Besides from being a great jazz musician, Wynton is an excellent classical trumpeter. His recording of the Haydn concerto is absolutely outstanding... not quite my favorite, but close. He'll never quite get the credit he deserves in the classical world because he spends so much time playing jazz and because he didn't come up through the "ranks" (which, for brass musicians, usually involves acting as principal at a major orchestra before a solo career).
