Good start to the series. Wells is turning into quite the find for the Cubs this season.
I'll take it and be glad for it.

what I noticed was the starting lineup...batting order aside. I believe these were the 8 position players they planned on starting all year. That has not happened in quite a while.

I was at the game tonight and what a perfect night for Baseball. Wells with another quality start, Lee keeps hot and another win. Things are shaping up.

fukudome has been looking pretty comfortable in that leadoff spot. i dont know if it will last but hes been getting on base consistently since the change. right now runners need to be on in front of d lee

I know that it worked out that Cox walked Bradley to get to A-Ram this time but I would like to invite managers from around baseball to please keep trying this strategy for the rest of the year. I hope LaRussa was taking notes.

I wouldn't have minded seeing Fox in there for Fontenot, even against the righty. He's been a better hitter lately and has more pop to get Soriano in from first. Oh well.

Horrible loss tonight. Can't lose to this team with Zambrano pitching and no Chipper in the lineup. Fontenot was brutal, 0 for 4 and left men on all over. Lee was bad tonight, but has been carrying them, and Hoff was bad again. Hoff has been bad last few weeks, think it may be time to send him down. Now we need a win tomorrow with Hart on the mound, not a good spot to be in.

Hoffpauir had a hit and scored the only run. Lee, Fontenot and Fukadome went hitless though. The key was situational hitting and unproductive outs...like in the inning where Hoffpauir led off with a single, then Ramirez singled to put runners at first and second with nobody out. Soriano strikes out and then Fontenot flies out Koyie Hill comes through with a 2 out single to score Hoffpauir, but had either Soriano or Fontenot advanced the runners (at least) they would have gotten 2 runs on the hit. Or if Soriano moved them over and Fontenot hits a deep enough fly or even a weak grounder, they get a run in already and have a runner on 3rd with just 1 out, before Hill bats. They wound up 1-5 with runners in scoring position, that was a huge reason why they lost tonight. Not enough timely hitting and unproductive outs.

give the braves defense credit though. they robbed the cubs of atleast 4 hits that i can think of. the biggest being that catch by mcclouth on fontenots deep fly ball. its not like the cubs didnt hit vasquez hard

I thought we traded for Jeff Baker the playoff maker? Why is Fontenot getting at bats and Baker not?

Did I miss something?

I was saying 2 months ago that Fontenot has been exposed - but the Cubs still can't see this?

Frustrating as hell...

fontenot had actually been hitting over 400 for the month. and that ball he hit to center was smoked. with a different wind that night that ball is probably off the wall

Last 21 days he is hitting .218?

That's a bit off the .400 pace.

Yeah I don't know how you can argue that Fontenot is doing anything to help this club out right now. He is lost at the plate and he especially blows with men on base. It is looking pretty clear cut he is not an everyday player. Bring on Andy White!

That play at 2nd in the 1st on Kosuke wasn't even REMOTELY close. He was on the bad seriousy when the thrown ball was a good 8-10 feet away. I can't fathom how Kosuke could have POSSIBLY been called out. that was just nuts.

Wow just got fucked on another play at 2nd. The inning before we saw why Fox isn't a outfielder, missing a routine hopper out there.

Another bad call at 2nd, this one where he called the runner safe with theriot making the dp turn.
Look close. Ump called him safe BEFORE the runner was even 4 feet from the bag!

yeah, I don't blame the umps for losing the game, but the runner can't be called safe if he's not on the bag. Guy called him safe BEFORE he made it to the bag.
FWIW, no runs scored, but something is happening with that ump. It's... like nothing I've seen before. I wouldn't argue balls ans strikes but that's two pretty damn bad calls at 2nd.
That being said... Cubs can't win a game where they score no runs.

this series cubs scored 2 runs in each of the first 2 innings...then nothing after. (6 total innings with no runs)

2nd game they score a whopping 1 run in 9 innings ( 8 total innings w/ no runs)

Today - so far...5 shut out innings.

What the fuck. They can't score runs for shit. shutout a total of 19 of 22 innnings this series. This has become a year long trend! damnit, damnit, damnit.

If they end up losing this game, it will be a huge let down after the Brewers series. There is no reason for only having 1 run against the guy they faced today. Just a horseshit effort so far.

Hendry needs to shake this team up. If he can't trade somebody, cut some
"star" loose and tell the public: "I screwed up but it's addition by subtraction."
SORIANO MUST GO! One way or the other,he has done squat in his time with
the CUBS (when it counts). Trade his fat contract for some other losers fat contract.
Change of scenery might work. Cubs might have to package a starter & Theriot for some hitting. Leave Blanco at SS.
