Supposedly a three team deal, Mavs get Marion, Stackhouse is moved out.

Talk also of the Mavs moving Josh Howard, possibly to Suns in exchange for Jason Richardson.

Possible starting lineup:

Jason Kidd
Jason Richardson
Shawn Marion
Dirk
Marcin Gortat

If the Mavs can put this all together, they may be able to make another run.

True. But I think they are wanting to try and make a push while they still have Dirk in his prime.

Don't you have some Atlanta Hawks NBA finals game film to review. . . oh wait. 8)

Um....nobody in the entire world expected the Hawks to take out the Cavs last year. Are you trying to say they should be embarrassed for getting swept by them? Of course you'd like to win, no doubt. But it's not like say, the Mavs- a #1 seed, losing to the #8 seed- The Warriors. When you're a #1 seed, you're expected to beat the #8 seed. That's called a choke. Losing to a higher seed and a team expected to make the Finals (who choked themselves) isn't.

You are right, no one expects the Hawks to do anything. :thumright:

Don't be so touchy, it is clear you are a Dirk hater. That's cool, but it is quite funny coming from a Hawk fan considering their rich and storied history of NBA greatness. Dirk is better than anyone on the Hawks roster and it is not even close.

based on what? you're right, the Hawks haven't won anything. what have the Mavs won? nothing. they choked severely in the Finals. that was their shot, and they choked. Dirk and marion and whoever else they manage to get on the roster isn't going to help them. You can chastise the Hawks and fine, and rightfully so- but the fact is they are young and are trending up- whereas the Mavs are trending down and trying a last ditch grab at an attempt at a title.

A lot closer than the Hawks have ever gotten. Have they ever even made the conference finals? The one year they had a shot, they choked big time to the Pacers back in the 90s.

Dirk, Marion, and Kidd will put them way above anything the Hawks have.

The Hawks are young and trending up, but what is that going to do for them? Nothing. They have some young talent, but it will be gone in the not too distant future. Joe Johnson will be gone. Are Horford and Smith enough to lead them to greatness? Eh, I don't think so.

At least the Mavs recognize their situation and are working at trying to get a title while they still have Dirk. The Hawks will be young and trending up for awhile, then all that will be gone and they will be starting another youth movement.

Actually, no. While they haven't addressed Joe Johnson yet, they did just sign Josh Smith and Bibby to long term deals. And they still hold the rights to Childress. And yes Horford will improve. I mean realistically when it comes down to it, we're aruging about middling NBA teams. Let's be honest. Yes, I know the Hawks aren't going to do anything unless they either develop some young talent quickly or make a big trade. I also know the Mavs are never going to get past the Lakers, Spurs or the other Western heavyweights, even with Marion. They're locked into a 5-8 seed in the West. So they'll probably be out in the 1st round. Hawks are good enough to take out the Bulls, Heat- middle of the road East teams but obviously will probably succumb to the Celtics or Cavs again.

Just like they were swept by the Spurs in the first round this past year, huh? 8)

In reality I agree with what you are saying. More than likely neither the Mavs or Hawks are going to win a title in the near future. I just happen to like the moves the Mavs are making and think they are getting themselves into a situation where they could possibly make a run if everything works out.

Well then what exactly are we arguing then?

I like the moves the Mavs have made, sure. Adding Marion can only help you. I also think the Hawks have done what could be expected of them- they took a risk on a long term deal with someone like Josh Smith who is a bit unstable, they resigned Bibby...let's look at it realistically- the Hawks aren't going to sign LeBron or Bosh or Wade or whoever. They need to keep who they have that is good and try to improve in small ways other than that.

Bagels, I had almost successfully removed the '07 Playoffs from my memory. As Chris Rongey says, "Thanks for being a D-bag."

Like in Game 7 of the 2006 conference semis?

RFDC - you say the Hawks dont have a player even close to as good as Dirk, I would argue Joe Johnson is in that league.

Joe Johnson is a good player, but I do not believe that he is as good as Dirk. The only real advantage I can see is he is younger.

Look at this past years stats:

Joe Johnson

21.4 Points
4.4 Rebounds
5.8 Assists
1.1 Steals
82.6 FT %
36.0 3 Pt %
43.7 FG %

Dirk

25.9 Points
8.4 Rebounds
2.4 Assists
.8 Steals
89 FT %
35.9 3 Pt %
47.9 FG %

I never thought I would see a Mavs and hawks fan in such a heated debate.

I ain't really a Mav fan, I am a diehard Bulls fan, but of all the Western Conference teams I have always liked the Mavs for some strange reason, and I think Dirk is a really good player.

You cant measure it on stats alone, although those stats dont really tell me Dirk is a much better player. Joe Johnson is a much better defender and makes his teammates better, Dirk hasnt done that in years.

How is Dirk a bad defender?

Also, I think it can be argued Dirk has focused too much on making his teammates better, instead of demanding the ball and taking more games over.

Either way, both guys are really good, I just think Dirk is better and I think the stats back that up.

How is Dirk a good defender? He's too slow footed to guard perimeter players and not strong enough to effectively battle post players. The same reasons he is hard to guard offensively make him a defensive liability.

Also he might focus on making teammates better, but I dont think he does.

Unfortunately me neither. Instead of looking for other options when his shot isn't falling, he constantly tries to shoot himself into the game; often shooting his team out of the game in the process.

I like what I've seen of Gortat, but, whether they keep Howard or trade for Richardson, this team is still no better than 4th or 5th in the West. They aren't a pushover though, but they will come up short against the Lakers and Spurs.

Atlanta is going to shoot a very low percentage this season. Between Jamal Crawford and Josh Smith, that's a lot of ill-advised shots going up this upcoming season.

I think both teams are basically stuck in the middle of their conferences. I do like the Marion acquistion for the Mavericks. When they first resigned Kidd to the 3 year deal, I thought they were done for the off-season, and on their way to a 5 or 6 seed next season, but, if Marion is motivated, this team will at least challenge the top of the conference teams.

As for Atlanta, Orlando, Boston and Cleveland are clearly the class of the conference. That leaves them at #4 in the conference, assuming that injuries don't derail any of these teams. Teams like Washington and Toronto could make big jumps in the East, and then there are the average teams in the conference (Chicago, Philly, Detroit and Miami) who will still win their share of games. I think Atlanta will be around 43 wins next season.
