I watch at least 4 White Stocking games per week.

Usually once an inning H. Harrelson feels the need to describe the outfield positioning. Stating that they are "spread out"...

Why does he do this? Shouldn't we just assume that they always are spread out? They're outfielders - one plays in left, one plays in center and one plays in right - they're ALWAYS spread out.

Not really. In some defensive alignments the corner outfielders might pinch in, more towards center, giving more of the lines. In others they might shade in one direction (RF or LF) if they think the hitter is dead pull or a guy who goes to the opposite field predominantly. If the outfield is spread out, the hitter is a guy who sprays to all fields and you can't "cheat" one way or the other.

he shoudl say, they are pinched in, playing no doubles defense, etc. His real only excuse is when the Sox are at home, they have one of the smallest OF's, no real major adjustments can be made for wind, alleys, wells, etc.

I enjoy Hawk's telecasts. It's like dipping your behind into a warm pile of pudding...awwww yeahhhhh

If psychological coercion wasn't so out of favor these days, the Feds could pipe Hawk Harrelson doing ballgames into David Hernandez's cell for a certain confession.

The best I can say is that Hawk is the Sox what Santo is to the Cubs. You just have to accept it and move on with life.

Something that always bothered me about baseball, and to a lesser extent football broadcasts. I like to see how the defense is playing the hitter. Can give you clues about how they're gonna pitch to him. If they show you the defense for a second before the pitcher sets up you get a better feel for the game, the flow of it. Baseball isn't a boring sport... there's something happening at all positions on each pitch, and what they do tells a story of the game. That's why with the current way of broadcasting you'll never experience a ballgame right unless you're there.
As for football, I'd sure like to see the secondary before a snap. Make it easier to get what's happening in coverage later.

I could complain about a lot of shit that Hawk does. However, I don't have a problem with his description of the outfield alignment. Maybe its helpful, maybe not. The fact is that there is a lot of dead time during a baseball broadcast that needs to be filled up with something. Your choices are:

1. silence
2. A Hawk story about playing for the Carmines or playing golf with Tom Kite
3. Inane chatter about outfield alignments, attendance, Herm Schneider, the Bertuccis, etc.

I choose number 3.

I understand why some people don't like Hawk. However, I think that he is markedly better with Stone in the booth. Also, as mentioned above, if you watch a Braves telecast (or, for that matter, most local telecasts of other MLB teams), you realize that it can be a lot worse.
