That's a pretty good assessment. I think that is why I don't hear the "fun" that I think should be there.

I think you hit on something important there, at least for me, PC. I listened quite a bit the first week-and-a-half but have only listened sparingly since. IMO Mac talks too much in Mac/Chet-isms and movie quotes. Talk to me like a normal person rather than someone who feels he always has to be "on" instead of simply being himself. Unless he's been "on" for so long that he isn't sure what that is anymore. I dunno...but it seems very artificial and it's not something I find myself wanting to listen to.

I would be quite happy if I never hear that fucking song again. It's 19 years old for chrissakes.

Yes, exactly. That's what I was getting at and maybe didn't explain it fully.

I love it...It reminds me of this cute guy that dated my friend's sister. I can still remember him pulling up in his black Thunderbird with that song on. Black Nikes, with black Cavaricci shorts and a white IOU shirt. He had a mullet and his car smelled like a Vanilla air freshner and Drakkar. He was so hot.

I like AC/DC well enough, but I too never understood the appeal of that song. Brian Johnson's voice sounds like our 1985 Ford Escort when we tried starting it. BRUTAL!

Totally agree. Its like he's subconsciously trying to do a Chet Coppick impersonation and why the hell would anyone want to emulate that hack. Hearing Mack talk is like nails on a chalkboard.

I agree, I am also a huge AC/DC fan, but that song is just plain awful.

Memo to self for ways to impress Spaulding...

Buy some black Cavaricci shorts. (I didn't know they made shorts, by the way)
Stuff said Cavariccis with sock.
Find the 80s IOU shirt. Throw it away as it will be WAY too tight. Buy a $180 Affliction T instead.
Grow mullet.
Spray car with vanilla.
Find an 80s Thunderbird (black)
Wear gold chain and snaggletooth medallion.
Suffer some brain damage to bettter appreciate Thunderstruck...(sorry)
Buy MORE Drakkar.

My problem with the show is that Spiegel combines the cloying giddiness of Mully with the intellectual daftness of Harry. He is an overstimulated lunkhead whose self-absorption prevents him from recognizing that much of what he says is drivel.

Lately, Mac has morphed into a bizarre combination of Chet Coppock and Steve Dahl circa 1990. I guess those years at AM 1000 rubbed off.

If I knew how to add a signature or was motivated to figure it out, THIS would be my sig. Not even because of the original reference to Spiegel but because it could be applied to a lot of people...

Kudos, TM.

He had a gold chain with the horn thing. That was a tooth? I always liked eternity better.

My friend and I both had a huge crush on this guy and were so jealous of her sister. Anytime we saw a hot guy we'd sing the bah ah ah ah ahahhah THUN-DER! It's still one of my favorite ac/dc songs.

Midge I love your summaries. There is a lot of truth in them. I'd like you to do one for me sometime. The angry martha stewart one from a few years ago was off.

You guys are right about the other stuff.

Next week should be a real treat with Mac gone and the cloying, giddy, daft, overstimulated, self-absorbed, and lunkheaded Spiegel driving the car.

I believe we are also going to be blessed with two days of kerry sayers  I thought she was a good as a reporter/anchor at sportsnight, but as a radio host she is awful, I don't know why espn1000 or the score keep giving her chances...

I wonder if a drunken "lay off Spiegel, assholes" post is forthcoming from an IP address in Ontario.

Mac and Spiegel sound like a couple of carnival barkers taking turns seeing who can yell the loudest.

And after all these years is someone ever going to tell Mac that trying to sound like the second coming of Chet Coppick is NOT a good thing. That's exactly who he sounds like, a self indulgent blowheart.

And maybe just maybe Mac can do a little research about sports before going on the air. Would it have killed him to spend 15 minutes on the internet introducing himself to Carlos Boozer so he could've at least pretened today like he even knew who the guy was, let alone how he plays? Its not like he didn't know the topic would come up this morning.

When it comes down to it, mac really has very little knowledge about sports other than the White Sox and Bears. He pretends to know hockey, but he really doesn't have a clue about the game.

The only things Mac likes to talk about are classic rock and gambling, the latter of which just makes him look like a pathetic degenerative addict.

And lets not even talk about Spiegel, I still have no idea why he is on the air or what he brings to the table other than his annoying carnival barker voice.

When I get in the car to drive to work the last thing I want to hear is a couple morons screaming over each other. It startling the difference in quality between this show and Waddle & Silvy...like night and day.

The one years audition can't end soon enough!

Hey John Kirk how many mults do you have?

What the heck is a mult?
Surely you must know that Shakes is not me, right???

Sorry Midge, but I don't see the comparisons between Harry and Meatpants.
Harry drinks way too much Chicago sports team kool-aid to provide any meaningful or objective opinions. I don't always agree with Meatpants, but he's able to break down the games and elaborate on his points. Harry just fills the air with rah-rah BS.

The show sounds forced...and Mac is constantly telling Matt what to say & do. And whats with using all of the other shows bits? Mac has refereced some of the one liners from Murph & others. I knew this show would blow th second I heard Spiegel was Macs partner...but I dont think he will be for long.

I must admit I am very surprised to read through this thread. I was honest when I said I hope Mac would do well with this show by bringing back some originality and entertaining radio, but reading this thread, where even his most vocal supporters are not very fond of the new show, makes me disappointed. I can't listen much in this time slot, but it does sound like little prep is still ruling the day and the quest for being clever is more important than being entertaining and talking sports.

I'm sorrry to read this thread.

I'll say it now--the "failed comedian" with his supposed over-privileged North Shore upbringing and his total Chicago homerism and the ex-jock that butchered the language and, according to some, didn't have a lot to contribute, were a HUGE part of Mac's success in the afternoons on 'MVP, whether anyone wants to admit it or not.

Mac is now "free" of all these ESPN rules that he contends stifled him there and he's free of Harry, whom he's continued to mock. Mac, you got a new playing field and a hand-picked partner, now . . . wow us. So far, well . . . ball's in your court . . .
