I see a ton of North haters on this board. So, if you guys had the chance to program a morning show from scratch, what would it entail?

I don't mean "I'd put the *FILL IN THE BLANK* show on instead". I mean specifically, what type of host or personalities, what the focus of the show would be, etc.

I know I'll get ripped on for this but here's what would work for me in the morning. Take Mike and Mike, make it mostly local talk, and remove the "I'm a metrosexual, you're a fat guy who eats a lot and farts" thing along with the book plugs. That would be perfect for me in the mornings. Mike and Mike are a very easy listen and don't grate on my ears as North does. I don't want angry, controversial, hard hitting sports talk in the mornings. That's what afternoon drive is for IMO.

Something like BB, I'd prefer to hear them on a station like WCKG, where they can talk pop culture and entertainment without being out of touch and trying to make some socio-political point like mike does. Talk politics without the usual close minded right wing approach like Mike. Talks sports like BB do. I love the little packages that they put together for the opening of the show is great and they should make more of those. Also add more drops, but play them less frequently.

I think Matt Abbatocola has a future as a sports host in the city. While it may be premature to promote him to a "drive time" slot, I think he hosting a morning show would be better than what The Score has now. Plus, when Matt is paired with Terry Boers, a lot of people tend to like that show (maybe cause he brings out a better Boers).

Anyways, my idea written in another thread was to team him with Brian Pauruke (sp?), another young guy who I think might make a good pairing with Matt. Matt drives the show, obviously. Then I'd get a Score veteran to be the third guy, first choice would be Steve Olken. Maybe Joe Bartosch, if not Olken, but if Olken were to be it, then I would have Bartosch be the producer along with Rock.

The wildcard: Mike Bloomberg as the 3rd guy, but that comes off the basis I have never heard him even host or co-host before. At the very least, I would have him do the updates in the A.M. and remove Fred (sorry Fred fans).

Name the show the First Call and see what happens. Maybe only have them on from 5:30 - 8a for the beginning, and expand Mully and Hanley from 8a-noon. If the new morning show was liked, then I'd expand it to 9 or 10a.

Ha! Fred fans.

Are there any Fred fans? Any Maxfield fans? Anyone on this board willing to step up? Just curious.

Come on Howitt_Fealz... there's gotta be a few young lads running around just waiting for Fred's next movie review.

What you guys are describing is what would work as an afternoon or midday slot. Morning drivein, I just don't know. Unless Olken's kid suddenly doesn't have diabetes, you can forget his availability.

What you need are guys with broader appeal; who can do more than sports.

The SCORE has never had a successful morning show. I doubt the format works in the mornings.

The ongoing parallel between MNMS and a Bad sports team is amazing, because nobody tears into the sports team owners and managers more than North. Paying players big money and blowing the team budget, guys they don't cut when they suck and for management on teams not seeing the most obvious scenarios that we all see.

I don't want somebody who can discuss the social/political issues in the nation/world better than Mike North - I just want intelligent sports conversation.

I think those station programmers think too much - it's a sports radio station for crying out loud - don't these jokers realize that there are other radio stations that talk politics all day long ? Don't they realize that most, probably nearly all, do not turn on the Score to get Mike North's position on North Korea.

That Annie is even on a sports radio station is a complete indictment of the Socre. She simply has no business being on the station, and we already know that she's going to oppose anything North says politically, so where's the intrigue there, even if both knew what they were talking about ?

Mike North is at his best, and it's sad I even have to say this, when he's talking sports. Sounds pretty simple, right ? The guy does tend to make points/arguments to raise controversy, but when he sticks to sports, I think he's a good listen.

I know Copp Chetock will love this but I'm in favor of giving 'ol Chetster a shot. He was a pioneer (love him or hate him) in Sports Radio. He annoyed me but I didnt tune him out anywhere near I tune out North.

I can hear it now-

"This is the return of C.O.S.!!! COPPOCK! ON! SPORTS!. Your dime your dance floor baby!"

I know its lame but what ya got now? I think he get better ratings and requires a third of this shitfest host.

He was the first one I thought of. Otherwise, Maybe a Tom Waddle with a Baseball guy. Kind of a "Bull and Bear" gimmick.

Coppock can't do mornings. Tommy Lasorda does not wake up that early.

Im not sure about the women chasin down fred for reviews, but i like the morning show. i love annie, she is extremely smart- i could only wish to meet girls like her. who cares what her political beliefs are, i dont agree with them but she makes the debates fun.


Fred is just fred. hes funny enough sometimes real good. who would replace him anyway? all that would happen is another hot head would come in and try to strong arm north, and that would work much worse.

I think the spectrum includes a fairly good cross section of Chicago sports radio fans. The fact that most people here dislike Mike North and his schtick is a pretty good indication that his slumping ratings are not an anomaly.

You, my friend, are in the minority.

I don't think any of us "hate" her. It's just that none of us think she has any place on a SPORTS radio talk show, which is where she currently happens to be employed.

Anne doing traffic on WGN = good
Anne doing news on WGN = good
Anne trying to break down last nights Cub / Met tilt = BAD

but shes does the morning show. the score put these three together in attempt to make a show for a broad audience, some that wouldnt necessarily listen to sports talk.

as for me, i like sports talk a lot, and im glad its only the morning show that is commercialized. but believe me, it would be a lot worse if they had some yes man as the host.

all you need in the morning is the scores and immediate reactions. thats what they give, and they also try to dish out some energy for you to wake up. later in the day, i mean from noon on, you get your intellect talk.

It has shown to be a very bad idea that has failed miserably.

sorry man, i have no idea about the state of the show. has there been ratings shown that its tanking? if ou ask me i dont know why brian hannely and mulligan are on in the day. murph should be 10-2. i guess you all hate murph too, he's only a fully educated talk show host and chicago native and all....

So, let me just clarify... you think that Mike North and Mike Murphy are the 2 best sports talk shows in Chicago sports radio?

Ike you're not listening to what we're saying. Go back and read man. Lots of long time guys on here who used to love Northy when he was back with the Monsters. The fact that it's a morning show isn't justifcation for the fact that it's a mixed topics train wreck. If I want to hear about Bush I'll listen to WGN or WBBM. We listen to WSCR for sports. If the show was sports focused, Annie had coherent sports thoughts, and Fred would disagree with Mike at times, I think the moring show would be just fine. But none of that is true, so Houston, we have a problem.

dont be mad at the hosts though. the train wreck you call it is only because they talk about some things you dont want to hear. the score made the decision to have an alternative show in the morning. they offered mike a lot of money. he accepted. its not a bad thing.

besides, he still crosses lines. he is still mike north, he will always ask whatever he wants. he is the best personality on chicago radio, even if these boards hate him they sure talk about him alot.

im glad i can leave the radio on the score all day and not get sick of hearing the same damn topic talked about over and over. its still like that sometimes but at least in the morning you can get a little flavor.

So long as it doesn't offend Jerry Reinsdorf, it doesn't mention ESPN1000, it doesn't involve listening to callers/emailers/guests/co-hosts, and doesn't involve any amount of thought for him to come up with it, you are right....

Sorry man, but if you think Mike North equals "dangerous" or intrepid radio, you are sorely mistaken....
