David Haugh, Tribune

One condition of all the optimism accompanying Jay Cutler and the Bears to training camp Thursday was the return of a hungry, healthy defense.

So much for healthy.

The Bears will start practice Friday without starting cornerback Charles Tillman, their most proven defensive back, who will be out indefinitely with a back injury, the Tribune has learned.

Tillman recently underwent an arthroscopic surgical procedure to clean up a disc in his back, a similar condition to one that caused him to miss the final two games of 2006. If the recovery goes well, the Bears expect Tillman to be back in time to play in the final preseason game Sept. 3 so he can see some action before the Sept. 13 season opener.

Still, the uncertain nature of the recovery during training camp will put even more pressure on the Bears' secondary to shore up before facing quarterback Aaron Rodgers and the Green Bay Packers.

It's worth noting that Tillman missed portions of training camp in 2008 while his daughter recovered from heart-transplant surgery and still had a solid season.

Tillman underwent off-season shoulder surgery that kept him away from organized team activities until June. He returned and was optimistic about the 2009 season.

Depending on how much time Tillman misses and the extent of the injury, it could affect the position move of Corey Graham. Graham played well replacing Nathan Vasher last season but was switched to free safety in the spring. He is behind Craig Steltz at free safety on the depth chart.

The injury makes it even more necessary for Nathan Vasher to return to the All-Pro form that has eluded him the last two seasons because of injuries and ineffectiveness. Vasher, the starting right cornerback, enjoyed a strong off-season.

Tillman's absence also will create an opportunity for second-year cornerback Zack Bowman, one of the surprises of off-season workouts. Bowman, who might have supplanted Graham as the No. 3 cornerback, had an interception in his only game during his rookie season before going on injured reserve.

Rookie D.J. Moore is an intriguing prospect but too young and unpolished to count on this early.

Graham also had been working at the nickel position behind Danieal Manning, whose versatility would give the Bears options if Tillman's injury lingers. Manning has starting experience at cornerback and free safety and might be the best all-around athlete in the secondary.

Tillman has returned from a back surgery before: In February 2007, he underwent surgery to repair a herniated disc in his back.

The Bears' first practice is at 3 p.m. Friday.

The article says they are into Bowman. This sucks. I like Tillman but it sounds like he is falling apart.

WTF? Why wasn't this taken care of in January, February or March?

He was busy quarterbacking his team in his charity football game.

Maybe because of the shoulder surgery? I don't know why he couldn't have the back done a month or so after the shoulder.

Well, this is the beginning of the end for Peanut. He'll recover from this surgery but he can't take too many more hits. That back won't be able to take it. Plus he has a bad shoulder that is only weaker cuz it's had surgery. Maybe you get one more good year out of him but that's it.

That's the NFL. It's brutal.

It's funny, part of the reason Peanut has these injuries is because he's such a good tackler. He does it the way you're taught unlike a lot of corners. Squares the guy up, sinks the hips, wraps up and drives the guy back. A lot of pussy CBs just try to cut the legs out. Those guys stay healthy but they have a lot of missed tackles and extra yards are gained on them.

Peanut is beat up cuz he plays the right way.

Bears better be scouring that waiver wire. Somebody always cuts a capable veteran not because of talent but because of salary. They need more bodies at CB. Tillman & Vasher might be through.

I think you might be getting ahead of yourself. Everyone said that about Mike Brown. Despite the injuries, Mike Brown continued to perform. Nate Vasher might be done. Peanut...Peanut's tough. Peanut will be back...don't you worry. Vasher, maybe not.

I look forward to Bowman getting more playing time.

Put him at the top of my list of people who will grab a starting position through pre season play.

So will the defense still be better just because we have Jay Cutler?

Yes. They won't be on the field as long.

So you believe that the defense will be better than it was last year?

I cant understand why the Bears did not address 2 of their 3 biggest problems...WR & DB/CB/S.
If Tillman is going to miss games, the Bears Defense is in trouble, & teams will throw the football against the Bears secondary.
I'm afraid Peanut has Mike Brown disease.

You bet. Sounds like Urlacher is finally healthy. We added a good LB in Tino. We've put our coaching staff in the places they know best.

And I truly believe the fact since this offense can better avoid 3 and outs, it will positively affect the defense.

Losing Tillman hurts, a lot though.
