Sounds like a heavy haul. Why would the Sox have had to increase their offer if the original was acceptable?

Peavy's rehab status as of July 17:

SAN DIEGO -- Padres right-hander Jake Peavy had his right ankle removed from a protective boot Thursday and will begin a rehabilitation program.
Peavy, who has been on the 15-day disabled list since June 13 with a strained tendon in his right ankle, threw for the first time since going on the DL and said that he feels well.

"I'm just walking around pain free and feeling like I'm ready to get strong and work toward getting out on the field," Peavy said.

The 2007 NL Cy Young Award winner received a clean bill of health from team doctors to begin the rehabilitation process although there was no time frame for his return. Peavy's optimism contrasted general manager Kevin Towers's feelings earlier this week about his pitcher's health.

"I think it's 50-50 if Jake will pitch again this season," Towers said, according to the San Diego Union-Tribune. "We'll know more when he comes out of the cast. I can't speak for Jake, but I'd much rather have him ready for 2010 than risking more serious injury by coming back too early this year."

Peavy, who hurt his ankle in late May while running the bases against the Chicago Cubs, was originally projected to be out 8-12 weeks.

Peavy is 6-6 with a 3.97 ERA in 13 starts for the last-place Padres.

I don't want to rain on the Sox/Peavy parade, so I won't for the most part. It's a good deal and the Sox gave up nothing of importance other than possibly Poreda.

However, NL pitchers to AL parks haven't worked great in the past and considering Peavy will be going from pitcher friendly San Diego to hitter friendly US Cell, do you think his impact will be as great Sox fans?

what do you consider the NL/AL difference in ERA? A half run? So let's say that his career numbers take a .5 hit to the ERA and his career numbers are at 3.29 as of now. 3.79 is still pretty good for an AL pitcher though isn't it?

His career WHIP is 1.19 - I think that's probably the most important number.

Does anyone know what the Sox were offering in the trade that was rejected earlier this year? Was Beckham or anyone else big in it? It seems like Kenny gave less this time around though. I really like this trade.

most important # is that he's 50/50 to pitch again this year which means we have 3/5 of a rotaion this year and will proablly be the favroite 2010 with our roation but will be on the outside looking at detroit winning it this year.....

A pretty damn formidable rotation for the next couple of years though...

Darky,

I was thinking the same thing - one less Cubs dominating pitcher to worry about...

FUCK - doh...

Well, at least the Cubs don't have to face him in Petco. Although the Cubs don't play too much better at US Commiskular either...

Hopefully Colon's injury is minor and he can pick up a couple of starts. It looks like Carrasco get the nod tonight.

This is a GREAT move...now get a few players...a CF and 2B would be a nice Christmas gift.

If Kenny can get a body that breathes along with a bucket of spit for Josh Fields he will reach godlike status.

Reinsdorf ought to think about extending Buerhle....like NOW.
This Peavy trade shows me Kenny is not some reckless WIN NOW maniac....
This trade is obviously geared up for the future....this is great.

The great pitching staff comes with its tradeoffs. Getz/Nix will be your second basemen next year. I also wouldn't be shocked if this means Jordan Danks and Podsednik battle it out for CF...but KW has that boner for Figgens and he always seems to eventually get his man. I don't think Figgens will command an outrageous contract given that he is 31.

I wouldn't mind seeing Shine Figgins in the Sox outfield.

They have a guy in AA who seems to be moving his way through the system. Seriously though, with those 4 starters, they can take a flier on a couple of low priced vets and just play musical chairs all year. Buehrle and Peavy alone are BIG innings eaters, and Danks/Floyd are shaping up that way as well. The bullpen is going to need at least one day where they can get a few innings.

Any worries about Peavy pitching outside SD? I think he'll make the adjustment to a new league/park myself, but interested in a statistical breakdown, if one is out there somewhere.

No worries. The current ace on the southside is 75-41 3.58 ERA in his career at the Cell. He's also thrown a no hitter and a perfect game. Good pitchers are good no matter where they call home.

I can't get enough of this. Even if it doesn't help this year, he is a young stud and will be here for awhile. I think giving up four very good prospects for an ace is a no brainer. They are after all just prospects as of yet.

He's also a great chip if things go bad. Let's say he pitches well and the Sox are out of it next year or the year after that. You can trade him and get back more than what you gave up to get him. We didn't give up "Can't miss" guys for him.

This really was a great trade even if he doesn't help this year. I think he will help. All indications are he'll be back by late August. It was an ankle injury. Not a shoulder or elbow.

Here's the thing: Kenny couldn't have got him in the offseason. More teams would have tried for him. They would have adjusted their team's money for him. Teams that were on his "list". He would have rejected the Sox. The fact that the Sox were the only team that wanted him made him want to come here for a chance to be in the playoffs this year. Because of that, he's the Sox property for 3 more years.
