Actually, I recall when Pappy really started coming off a dick. Someone emailed him when he was doing the show with Anne and asked him why he didnt take calls any longer, he said he did that for ten years, he didnt have to do that anymore. What kind of dick says something like that? It was like, thanks for getting me where i am guys, but now that i made it, screw you. I just think its really hard to do sports talk radio without taking calls, it was a bad choice.

Somebody should track down Ann Maxfield. I bet she has some Pappy stories.
He treated her like shit.

See this is a tough one. Ann was not right for that show to begin with, and IMO didn't provide any substance. It was not like she was good in a bad position. She was bad in a bad position. She was part of the problem on Mike's AM show. I would not expect her to have any positive thoughts about any of them...including her own performance. She may be able to add something in a different job. I haven't seen/heard her on anything else.

we are not friends, but we have spoke a few times via email and she was pretty open with her thoughts about pappy and score mgt.

evertime someone brings up that ann wasnt a fit, just remember who "hand picked" her and wouldnt let the score fire her. In case they dont know, the answer is pappy;)

RodeoVann,
Yes,I too talked with Ann via e-mail. It was right after she was let go. I knew she was not happy, but she did not do a "rip" job.

I dont hate pappy, I am a critic of his, yes, but thats because his last 6 years of radio, webio and tv have sucked, but he is saying how great it was, thats a lie. I have said it for years, pappys product was good for a long time, but once he got the money, he got lazy. His ratings, effort and ego prove it. I dont care that he got the money, get it while you can, but the money changed him, people who would know better then me have told me that, but the one word that is common in the discussions i have had with people is "lazy".

As a sports talk radio fan, i never saw pappy as the face of the score, i always liked HFC and B/B more then any of pappys shows, but thats my opinion. Bottom line, pappy had a big part in bringing the score where it is, but he also had a huge hand in his own downward spiral, actually it was all him and that hurt the score, something pappy will never admit to.

I have no issues with those who defend him, but I dont think you can tell me I am wrong that he became a control freak and coudlnt dig himself out of the hole he dug, he did this to himself and I just cant feel sorry for him, nor do I think he cares if I do or dont, but when he whines about it, no tears for him from me.

But North was the face of the Score & was, more than anyone else, responsible for WSCR's success in the 1990's. We all remember how high profile he was in advertising, new stories, newspaper articles & the like. Hell, he was getting national attention & publicity ass well, to the point where WFAN in New York made North & Jiggets an offer to host a show. North turned it dowm because he couldn't leave Chicago.
Damn those were the days.

WAS is the key word in your statement. He is now a has-been and Mr. Irrelevant to most of the city, NO LOSS.

No, it isn't true.

Agreed that she was hand picked. But no one forced her to take the job, or stay at the job. She took it and I am guessing could have left when it was clear it wasn't working. I am not trying to defend North in any of this (although keeping her employed was a good gesture). Should she not take some responsibility for her career choice and how her interaction worked with the rest of that show?

she ripped mike and others, i shared those emails with a few people here. i didnt ask her to call mike a stooge oragase a idiot, she did that on her own.

the feeling i got from her is there is no lost love for mike, jen and some others. either or, it doesnt matter, bottom line is ann was mikes choice and it can be added to the growing list of pappys failed creative decisions.

A dick who isn't getting any calls anymore because he doesn't have any listeners.

If Mike did put out the word that he got an offer from WFAN, I remind you that he also put out the word that he was in the running for the Sox radio analyst job, but "took himself out of the running so he could concentrate on making the morning show better."

In other words, he's full of hot, steaming feces as always.

Yes, she bears responsibility for her choice as do those who followed North to Webio, but that doesn't mean her criticisms after-the-fact of that giant turd and what happened with the morning show aren't valid. I wish more of the Webio crowd would be truthful and do the same.

Yes he did, about 10 or 12 years ago.

Did he really turn it down cuz he could nt leave chicago?

That was the reason he gave.

Were those really the days?

At that time North and Jiggets were the shit as far as sports talk radio shows at that time.

Mike is a BS-er, and he never changed his style. He never became introspective with his work. He didn't appear to heed criticisms and make adjustments.
He just continued to assume more control of his show and ran it into an iceberg. Mike worked best with a partner. The MNMS was anything but a group project.
He hardly used restraint with his comments, and that caught up with him. He never appeared to mature into his role.

Hey,I eat at Tony's.He has great stuff BUT the place with excellent food is next door. The bakery on Saturdays, makes all kinds of excellent Italian dishes. You need to walk in there about 11am. Chicken parmesan, eggplant parmesan, meatballs, all kinds of stuff!

Mike's early shows gained popularity due in large part to the appearances of Walter Payton and Mike Ditka. Northy can thank Jiggs for those gets. Neither Bears icon originally came onto the show because of North's presence.
His show really worked when his co-host had Bears ties. Mike conned himself into thinking that he could talk about all types of sports. He just lacks the sports acumen to pull that off.

The Score was put on the map the day North ripped Isiah for walking off the court without shaking hands

Why don't you go ahead and add that nugget to the Wikipedia file on the station.

I don't remember North's statement being the lone or standout voice of discontent.

It wasn't a statement, it was an interview where he let him have it and didn't let Isiah equivocate about his actions. His ripping of Mike McCaskey in an interview helped the station out greatly also.

I agree that Mike became what he often railed about when he started. But he made that station in a way that Mac and Boers could only be envious of. He got paid, and in turn Mac got paid himself along with many others. Mac has said as much on this very board.

Pete Rose is one of the all time tools and liers in sports.
He should never get into the HOF.

The all time leader in hits doesn't deserve a spot in the Hall of Fame? he may be a tool, may have bet against the Reds even. But he was an all star at several positions, won gold gloves at several positions and helped teams to World Series championships-besides having more hits than anyone to play the game. He belongs and will get in, within the next couple years. There was talk last month that Selig has been discussing lifting his suspension.

Yeah,Selig is an asshole. He wants to bask in some goodwill with the Rose move.
It might make the steroid stench go away. Baseball needs a real commisioner!

No, it isn't true.

Yes, he frequently was the guest "Chicago" voice on WFAN, and he would be the "Chicago" face for the local TV sports network. It was quite amusing. He played the Chicago meatball/superfan to a "T".
