I think I was his only supporter last year. Anyone else want Adam Dunn INSTEAD of Lee now? I'd love to hear from MITC especially...

DLEE has stolen AB's from THE HOFF! That's why his BA went down!

While I was all for letting Hoff have some At Bats while D lee was still batting 180ish, I said that Hoffpauer would have to be such a huge offensive improvement to take DLess job because D Lee Defense is that much better.

Who was the poster last year that kept bringing up Lee's GIDP's?

They almost HAD to keep playing Lee, though he was hitting under the .200 (Mendoza ) line, for the first 6-7 weeks of the season, because he is making 13.5 million. Hoffpauir is making peanuts, was coming off a season in which he had 25 homers and 100 RBI in UNDER 300 at bats(289) at AAA, AND had hit well over .300 in the majors (I think it was .342) AND he had led everyone in the majors with 26 RBI in spring training, while Lee did poorly. So to want a guy who had been doing as well as Hoffpauir, to get the playing time he had earned, over a guy who last season had the most at bats on the team that led the league in runs, yet had just 90 RBI and led the league in hitting into double plays.....is not crazy or unreasonable at all. But for the sake of the team and the Manager that had to keep playing the higher salaried Lee, I am happy he decided to start hitting again. I hope it continues...

some of those old DLee threads are probably a real hoot to read now. then, as now,

Hoffpauir>Lee = retarded thinking

and the argument against signing adam dunn because his defense isnt good enough still makes me chuckle, too.

And the whole "he always hits into double plays" thing...he hit the ball hard a lot, and the Cubs had a ridiculous OBP last year so there were always guys on in front of him.

I was critical of Lee, and I didn't think he would turn it around. I am happy I was wrong.

But he did have two sub-par years for a guy making 13.5 million/year and batting in the 3 hole.

I'm with BigFan, I thought Hoff should have gotten some ABs, but never ever did I think he should outright replace him.

What I did love, was how many times this year I have heard people say "D-Lee is what he is... he's going to hit you 20-25 Hrs..."

If there were always guys in front of him (on base) so as to allow him to hit into a team record (and 2008 high) number of double plays, how come the guy with the most at bats on the team that scored the most runs in the league, had just 90 RBI???? The guy was a serial killer in 2008. He killed more rallies than anyone.

in 2007 albert pujols grounded into 27 double plays. i highly doubt anyone in st. louis was calling for pujols to be benched in favor of scott spiezio. granted pujols put up a higher avg. and power numbers so hes given more slack. but still 27 double plays is the same amount d lee had last season.

lee has never hit into that many double plays in his career outside of last season. not even close to that many. and this year hes in single digits. he had big problems with his wrist which i dont think he cared to tell anyone about. but this year he has been carrying this team on his shoulders through all the drama and injuries and he deserves credit for that

Yeah but if Scott Speizio led ALL of spring training in RBI's he would've started ahead of Pujols!!!

However, Pujols had 36 Homers and 116 RBI, not 20 and 90. The comparison doesnt work. Had Lee hit for 36 and 116, with a higher batting average to boot, the topic probably never arises.

Maybe if Lee had a true leadoff hitter in front of him that got on base a lot, he'd have more RBIs.

Yep - I will admittedly stand corrected (for the moment), but the guy's body of work the last couple of years certainly warranted questions about his value to the club. So what do we with Hoffpauir now? Are we thinking that D will keep this up for the remainder of his hefty contract, making Micah completely expendable? I'm wondering what can we get for him, if that is the case...

For who? Not Albert Pujols...he had 524 official at bats (add in 104 walks and sac flies) scored 100 runs, had 187 hits, including 44 doubles and 37 THIRTY SEVEN homers and tallied 116 RBI ONE HUNDRED SIXTEEN...plus 7 stolen bases. These stats are for 2008, when Lee had just 20 homers and 90 RBI.

I would rather have Dunn instead of Lee... I guess I am missing the point? Short of batting average, he's better at everything at the plate. On defense, he has quite a few more errors, but even if you figure that an error is worth about one run to the other team (my guess is that the true value is less than that), you're only giving up 9 runs. And you can plug Dunn into left, right, and first base. They are both having good years, but Dunn's is better IMHO.

i was big-time in favor of adam dunn, but never to replace lee, but to bat between ramirez and lee. milton bradley was a dumb-assed signing, and a bad example of over-thinking filling an obvious lineup need (left-handed power) by taking the "better all-around hitter". they were and are both hacks in the outfield. i will take the hack that hits 40-100 every year. hoo boy.

Lee's defense should not be underestimated at 1st. And Dunn would make an already shakey outfield defense worse, if that's possible. The Cubs have one of the worst defensive outfields in the NL without Reed Johnson.
RFDC, my apologies. You did stand with me on that last season.

You're also the guy who loves Soriano. How do you feel about that steaming pile of dog crap now??? They never should have signed Soriano or Bradley. Woulda been better off signing Carlos Lee and either Abreau or Ibanez.
