WSCR overtakes MVP, but barely.

The current ratings must reflect what we saw in the Spring book, since the Score is now claiming to be the #1 sports station in Chicago.

Yeah but that's bullshit. 1000 was always a couple points ahead of the Score because they had the nights won with Sox and Bulls. Now the Score wins nights because of the Sox. But it doesn't reflect on their day part shows. I'm sure Mike and Mike are beating Pappy and we learned MJH are still ahead of B&B.

July's current quarter ratings are up.

WSCR's 1.8 to WMVP's 1.5

I wonder what the total breakdown is by time slot?

That's a pathetic showing for both stations. It looks like sports talk is not a growth market anymore. The combined numbers are not good.

I'll see if I can dig up the numbers for certain shows.........probably won't be able to, but if I could I'd love to know how 9 to noon is doing.

50% increase for SCR over the winter number is quite impressive. MVP should have kept the Sox.

1.2 to 1.8 is a 50% increase, Einstein. 50% of 1.2 is 0.6, and 1.2 + 0.6 = 1.8

In today's Trib:

ON SPORTS MEDIA AND COLLEGES
Sox help boost WSCR's ratings

by Teddy Greenstein

July 19, 2006

Arbitron released its spring book Tuesday and, as usual, both sports radio stations claimed victory in the ratings battle.

WSCR-AM 670 officials crowed about results in two key demographics: 12-plus (overall audience 12 and older) and men 25-54. In 12-plus, the Score beat WMVP-AM 1000 1.8 to 1.5.

It was almost a dead heat among men 25-54, with the Score enjoying a 3.8 to 3.7 advantage.

Those results reversed a trend of recent WMVP victories and prompted WSCR general manager Paul Agase to boast: "We have a plan and it's working. We took advantage of a high tide."

That high tide was created by the White Sox, who jumped ship from WMVP to WSCR after last season.

"We've gained Sox listeners and converted them into Score listeners," Agase said.

But WMVP general manager Jim Pastor was not impressed, attributing WSCR's overall victory to a ratings edge on weeknights.

He called the Score "a one-trick pony."

"It begins and ends with the White Sox," he said. "[WMVP] continues to dominate when it counts. We own sports radio from 6 a.m.-7 p.m."

WMVP's afternoon "Mac, Jurko & Harry" show remained the highest-rated local sports show in the market, rising (among men 25-54) from a 4.2 to a 5.0 from the winter to the spring.

But MJH's top competition, the Score's "Boers and Bernstein" show, enjoyed a greater ratings rise, from 2.8 to 4.1.

"We're in striking distance," said Mitch Rosen, WSCR's program director.

WMVP host Dan McNeil said he's not worried: "Our concern is in being the No. 1 overall show among men, and we're chasing (WLS-AM 890's) Roe Conn. We don't care about the collection of dirt behind us."

Bottom line: The audience split has gone from about 60-40 to 55-45. And the suspensions of McNeil and Harry Teinowitz, obviously, didn't help, as Terry Boers and Dan Bernstein gained the edge in June, 4.6-4.1.

While the Score's Mike North had a good book, climbing from 2.8 to 3.9 among men 25-54, it still wasn't enough to beat WMVP's Mike Greenberg and Mike Golic, who registered a 4.4.

WMVP's new morning tandem of Sean Salisbury and Steve Rosenbloom also performed well, based on preliminary indications. But because of its 9 a.m.-noon time slot, that show's ratings won't be clear until Arbitron releases hour-by-hour breakdowns.

those who talk about the sox impact, that is why the cbs suits paid the big bucks for the sox, it shows how critical that contract is

Hold on a minute, but weren't poeple claiming and betting that the Sox wouldn't improve the Score's numbers? And face facts, B and B are slowly but surely closing in on MJH.

LONG LIVE THE DIDDLY and LIL DANNY BERNSTINE

Anyone who said that the Score wouldn't re-take the lead doesn't know the first thing about radio. Their victory was guaranteed when they got the Sox.

A few facts. the Score used to bill between 11-14M without the Sox. They will raise that number only slightly this year. They will pay out close to 3M to do the games. That will make them a less profitable station.

MVP used to lose 5-6M a year with the Bulls and Sox. Now that they are billing around 12M, and their ENTIRE on-air payroll is less than the MNMS, they will make the ESPN suits very happy.

B&B will live long because they have new deals. As for catching MJH, I don't see it anytime in the near future. Hardly means that it won't happen. But SCR should win the summer book also. And perhaps the fall book too if the Sox go far in the play=offs.

seacrest is right on the money / wscr over-payed for the sox to use them for whats called a "loss-leader" / theyre not making any money on the sox / theyre hoping you stay tuned to 670 for other shows / too bad the after-sox programming sux / so the plan back-fired.

in a sarcastic way you nailed it, the scores biggest opening is mornings against a national broadcast, with a very soft un-Chicago edge. Look Murph and Fred beat Mike and Mike. So all you need is a solid show, I say Goff and Uncle Fuzzy would work.
