Allen Iverson announced Wednesday morning that he is indeed joining the Memphis Grizzlies.

Via his Twitter feed, Iverson wrote: "God Chose Memphis as the place that I will continue my career."

Referring to a Monday meeting with Grizzlies owner Michael Heisley, general manager Chris Wallace and head coach Lionel Hollins, Iverson added: "I feel that they are committed to developing a winner and I know that I can help them to accomplish that. I feel that I can trust them."

The Grizzlies are believed to be offering Iverson a one-year deal for $3.5 million, which is far less than the nearly $21 million he earned last season in Denver and Detroit but far more than anyone else was prepared to pay the 34-year-old.

Grizzlies officials did not immediately confirm the signing but have made it clear that they have merely been waiting since last week for Iverson to take their offer.

Allen Iverson is a once-great player who doesn't have a position. All summer I've looked up and down each NBA roster trying to figure out where he would fit. I couldn't find a single team.

The league is different from what it was 8 to 12 years ago when A.I. was in his prime. The role of "pure point-guard" has come back to the forefront, much like it was in the 70s and 80s when all the contenders had to have a good PG. The days of the combo-guard have come to an end and players like A.I. (and Marbury) have been passed up.

He should just play out this year, get his money, and retire. He's not any closer to a title than he ever was, or ever will be again.

Allen Iverson's time in Memphis is over.

Iverson and the Grizzlies have mutually agreed to part ways, and Iverson is expected to be placed on waivers by 6 p.m. ET Monday, a league source tells ESPN.com's Chris Sheridan.

Under the agreement, Iverson will receive only a fraction of the $3 million he was scheduled to earn. If he clears waivers, he will become an unrestricted free agent on Wednesday night.

Iverson has been on a personal leave of absence for 10 days. Grizzlies owner Michael Heisley had told Iverson's agent, Leon Rose, earlier Monday that team wanted to know soon whether Iverson would play or retire, the Commercial Appeal reported.

In three games since returning from a hamstring injury, Iverson averaged 12.3 points and 3.7 assists in 22.3 minutes as a reserve.

He was a great player for a long time but his legacy will be of a guy who scored a lot of points that ultimately meant nothing. He never had the privilege of playing with a real "team" in all his years in the NBA and that's a shame. Had the Sixers ever bothered to bring a #2 guy in, we wouldn't be having this discussion because Iverson would probably have a ring.
