This is a match made in bad basketball heaven:

Quote:
Allen Iverson announced Wednesday morning that he is indeed joining the Memphis Grizzlies.

Via his Twitter feed, Iverson wrote: "God Chose Memphis as the place that I will continue my career."

Referring to a Monday meeting with Grizzlies owner Michael Heisley, general manager Chris Wallace and head coach Lionel Hollins, Iverson added: "I feel that they are committed to developing a winner and I know that I can help them to accomplish that. I feel that I can trust them."

The Grizzlies are believed to be offering Iverson a one-year deal for $3.5 million, which is far less than the nearly $21 million he earned last season in Denver and Detroit but far more than anyone else was prepared to pay the 34-year-old.

Grizzlies officials did not immediately confirm the signing but have made it clear that they have merely been waiting since last week for Iverson to take their offer.

Well, as Bernstein would say- "It's a thing"

Can't hurt, considering the great history of the Memphis Grizzlies. :puker:

I think it can hurt a ton. They pretty much have a very young team, and having morons like Randolph and Iverson around will do nothing but hurt this team. They will not be a playoff team with these guys and they still won't be a playoff team without them. These moves make no sense. Just let the kids play and keep developing.

Allen Iverson is a once-great player who doesn't have a position. All summer I've looked up and down each NBA roster trying to figure out where he would fit. I couldn't find a single team.

The league is different from what it was 8 to 12 years ago when A.I. was in his prime. The role of "pure point-guard" has come back to the forefront, much like it was in the 70s and 80s when all the contenders had to have a good PG. The days of the combo-guard have come to an end and players like A.I. (and Marbury) have been left behind.

Plus, A.I. is old. He can't even do the things on the court that made him such a great scorer. In his prime, you could overlook his defensive lapses and poor court-vision when he was scoring 35 to 50 points. He can't do that anymore.

He should just play out this year, get his money, and retire. He's not any closer to a title than he ever was, or ever will be again.

Why not just do the usual "veteran signs to Celtics/Lakers/Cavs for the minimum" then

I suppose because he still refuses to come off the bench?

VANCOUVER!!!

BTW My thought is...there really never WAS a place for Iverson...I know he had some success...but a pg who shoots 40 shots per game and needs the ball ALL the time doesnt really fit on a winning NBA team.

Allen Iverson a Grizzlie? This has disaster written all over it, given the fact the Grizzlies aren't exactly filling FedEx Forum like they do for their Memphis college basketball team, even before their latest scandal. I would bet almost any amount of my money that there will be times when the Grizzlies are getting their clocks cleaned and A.I. just sits there sulking like Al Bundy did in shame on countless episodes of "Married...with Children". Not exactly a smart basketball move... :(

I'm willing to be that was a pretty big consideration in signing him. Not that he has the star power he once had, but I'm sure that's at least some of the thinking here, that people will want to come out and see him

it's sad to see this guy end up as sloppy seconds to every other team, but he really is playing in a game that's passed him by.

he will go down in history as the all-time leader in shot attempts.

The Iverson era in Memphis is now over. How many banners did he hoist to the top of their jam packed arena?

Quote:
Source: Grizzlies to waive Iverson

Allen Iverson's time in Memphis is over.

Iverson and the Grizzlies have mutually agreed to part ways, and Iverson is expected to be placed on waivers by 6 p.m. ET Monday, a league source tells ESPN.com's Chris Sheridan.

Under the agreement, Iverson will receive only a fraction of the $3 million he was scheduled to earn. If he clears waivers, he will become an unrestricted free agent on Wednesday night.

Iverson has been on a personal leave of absence for 10 days. Grizzlies owner Michael Heisley had told Iverson's agent, Leon Rose, earlier Monday that team wanted to know soon whether Iverson would play or retire, the Commercial Appeal reported.

In three games since returning from a hamstring injury, Iverson averaged 12.3 points and 3.7 assists in 22.3 minutes as a reserve.

poorly worded on my part. There's no doubt he's in the hall. I dont think he's very overrated at all, definitely not nearly as much as players like patrick ewing

He was a great player for a long time but his legacy will be of a guy who scored a lot of points that ultimately meant nothing. He never had the privilege of playing with a real "team" in all his years in the NBA and that's a shame. Had the Sixers ever bothered to bring a #2 guy in, we wouldn't be having this discussion because Iverson would probably have a ring.

Exactly. For the purposes of this discussion, I wasnt really taking into account what his legacy would be by the general population. I dont care about that. But actually you made a solid case for him being underrated. Dikembe was a great fit for him, but beyond that who's the best he played with? I think a rookie stackhouse, an overrated Glen Robinson, a completely washed up CWebb? He was the best scorer in the league for a 5-6 year period and one of the best players post-Jordan to date.

It depends on if he was willing to accept a diminished role given his diminished skills. If he was I can think of a few. I think he'd be good on the Cavs, Lakers, Suns, Bulls(replace Pargo with him), 76ers, etc.

I find it funny that the Pistons discarded him and gave the keys to Gordon and Stuckey. Yeah that'll help the ball movement.

Quote:
Phil Sheridan of The Philadelphia Inquirer: "If the 76ers sign Allen Iverson, they might as well skip ahead a few moves and make him coach and general manager as well. Just turn the whole franchise over to Iverson, because bringing the former Sixers star back now, after everything that has happened, is acknowledging the failure of Ed Stefanski and, by extension, coach Eddie Jordan. The logic is pretty simple. If Stefanski had a plan with a prayer of working, he would not sign Iverson. If Jordan had any intention of developing a young team to play the game his way, he would not want Iverson. Ergo, they might as well give Iverson their jobs, as well as the $3 million or so it will take to sign him. Iverson will be deciding how much he plays and with whom, so the Eddies won't be necessary anymore, anyway. ... This is the Buffalo Bills signing Terrell Owens -- a cynical move made for the sole purpose of bringing a little attention to a team that has proved itself incapable of earning it the proper way, by winning."
