Hearing Mac talk about buying his son a riding mower due to his fascination with such things. Just hearing the joy in Mac's voice when talking about his son is something I've always enjoyed about his shows.

One of my Sales guys got married at 40 years of age, & had Twins 18 Months ago. One of his Boys was just diagnosed with Autism & it is tearing he & his Wife apart. Annual counceling & tharapy is about $25K & Insurance in Illinois won't cover any of it. Whatever problems we think we may have in our lives pale in comparison to health issues like this that people must deal with both emotionally & financially for the rest of their lives.

We all have things that are tough to deal with in our lives. I just like to hear people who genuinely enjoy being parents and find joy in the happines of their children. Especially fathers. With the way fathers are portrayed these days, I find it refreshing.

Scorehead,
We have friends with a autistic boy who is about to turn 18. I guess he has to move to another home. I'm sure as a parent, you worry what happens after you are gone. It is a tremendous strain that no one deserves. Day to day life is tough enough.

I hated MAC when I first heard him...basically thought he was a blowhard and too anti cub...but his stories about his son humanized him...and thats when I became a fan.

Parenting should be enjoyed. Its stressful, but awesome.

The awesome WAY outweights the stess for me.

autistic boys in their late teens can be extremely aggressive and hard for mom to deal with. we had to put my brother in a home when he turned 18. it was the only option.

Hearing Mac talk about buying his autistic kid a riding lawnmower made me think of this week's episode of Mad Men.

I missed Mad Men this week. I wonder if the reruns are available on Hulu?

I will withhold any negative thoughts on DaMaNa the host and simply say that parenting is cool. I got nothing for Christmas last year, but watching my son open the stuff I got for him was enough for me.

Might not cure it but it makes it irrelevant for 10-15 minutes at a time though.

Something about this just doesn't seem right. I know I should stay in my place but this was really bothering me.

The family could be hurt by the autistic in the family. It is rough, but that may be the only option like Doug said.

Even strong male family members can have a tough time dealing with how physical a fully grown autistic male can behave. They can cause serious injury especially to someone they clearly outweigh and are stronger than. They are not only a danger to others but also to themselves and require specialized care. In jr. high I worked with the special education classes and many of the teachers struggled physically with those students when they would be having an outburst. I can only imagine what it would be like 4 years later when they've gotten bigger and stronger.

when a self-abusive, hormonal, 6' - 165 pound athletic 18 year old kid attacks your wife or mother on a weekly or basis, you do what you have to.

remember the scene in Rainman when Dustin Hoffman starting hitting himself in the head?
walk in those shoes for 18 years...or just be happy you don't have to.

I couldn't tell if you meant therapy for the child or for the parents. But, Illinois law was passed last year requiring insurance companies to provide coverage for children with an autism diagnosis.

Here is some information regarding it -
