As I walk home from Chens (thats what dinner was) I hear the loud cheers coming from Wrigley. I can't help but be ashamed that anyone is there cheering for that team right now. Why would anyone go to a game? For what? It's cold, it's a school night! OK, maybe 15,000 would just go because they got ticket for free from someone like me. If I am going out, I might say "hey lets go over to Wrigley" I get it, but the cheers sound like we are in some penant race and it sound slike 30,000!! No other way I can say , I am ashamed of the people in the park yelling like we just won a meaningful game!

I don't really see the problem in going to the game and enjoying yourself. And if that includes cheering for a team that is eliminated what the hell does it matter? I personally would not spend a cent to go to a game right now and have watched about 5 minutes of baseball in the past few weeks, but I can't fault others for feeling differently.

I was there last night. Got a pair of free tickerts from someone at work. Stadium was about half empty. They weren't many cheers going on, but you could sit wherever you wanted, and we spent most of the time making cracks about the Cubs' awful season. It was almost therepeutic in a way. I thought it was going to be cold, but it actually wasn't that bad. If it was Bear Weather, the stadium would have been filled. The biggest cheer of the night probably went to Blue Jesus, when he made a diving catch at first. Other than that, the game was over after the first inning.

Looking at the scoreboard and the vines steels one for the upcoming Winter.
The game is totally meaningless.....It is a Chicago experience now...the passage of the seasons....and as a Sox Fan, this stuff will ALWAYS piss me off....so it is better to go to The Shrine and enjoy beers and laughs in September rather than to go to the Cell and get Aggravated.

Attendance has been down at Wrigley, which is to be expected, but you can't have it both ways. If you want the roster/payroll that is competitive in MLB, you need your fanbase to support the time in thick and thin for 162.

some fans just enjoy watching baseball and get excited when their team wins. sure who wouldnt want the cubs to be in the playoffs but theyre not. you can still go to the park and enjoy a nicely played game by your team. after a couple more weeks there will be no more baseball for 6 months. might as well cheer it up now

Let's be honest here....the White Sox fanbase does not consist of tourists and fans of opposing teams coming here in the Summer months to get blasted in the neighborhood and pay homage to The Shrine.

The Sox fanbase does not consist of a lot of recent college grad Yuppies who are from somewhere else and look at the Shrine as one big party and care little if the "cutesy Cubbies" win or lose.

Wrigley Field and the neighborhood will always sell tickets.....the "Cubbies" will not.

White Sox fans took a look at this Kenny Williams Special coming out of Spring Training and were skeptical.....it is not ingrained in us to BELIEVE......I sure as hell don't blame a lot of folks for not showing up to watch THIS PAINFUL team under some "We are great fans" banner.

I agree with this and in large part I'm extremely frustrated with this stereotype of a Cubs fan. At times it feels you need to establish yourself as a fan of the organization from the minors up instead of the yuppie popped collar assclown who goes to the 50$ bar that can be Wrigley. At the same time though, the stereotypical Cubs fan does help the organization in terms of a larger payroll, so take the good with the bad I suppose although the bad is maddening.

To be honest, if I had to pick a team right now without any of my pass allegiances I'd be a Sox fan no doubt. Unfortunately can't really help the way I was brought up with my Dad,Brothers all being Cubs fans taking me to games etc.

I love baseball. I especially love baseball played the right way by great teams, so I went to my last game of 2009 back in July and the only reason for going then, was that I couldn't sell the tickets for a decent price. However, there are a lot of people who do not get the chance to go see a Cubs game in person, particularly when the team is going well (as was the case the previous 2 seasons). So when they get the chance, they might go, just to be able to feel the atmosphere of Wrigley. To drink in the history of the oldest ballpark in the National league, along with a few Bud Light's. When the game goes the right way, naturally they cheer. Just as when it goes wrong, they might boo. At least they are playing out the last of the games, giving some effort. Thats something...for the fan who paid for parking/concessions, if not the ticket as well, they deserve that much. The fact that it might result in a win, is not a bad thing, even if it lacks much meaning.

Yes, I understand that the CLICHE works for the pissing contest that Sox fans want to bait us into CONSTANTLY (which is pretty damned tired since, well, the '80s) and the "tourists and yuppies" do come out to the games and fill a significant percentage of seats - but it still is not an accurate damned representation of the "fanbase" like those resorting to this stupid-and tired-argument would have you buy into...

Stereotyping either fan base is way too easy. The Cubs are all yuppie drunks and dumbass tourists from Iowa. The Sox fans are all extended members of the Ligue clan. The truth is both sides have alot of legitimate fans who care about baseball and love their teams. Both sides also have alot of bags of douche. The pissing contest gets tiresome.

I guess I didn't make my point as clearly as I wanted to. This stereotype does not fit the 'real fan', but I do believe the Cubs, maybe just behind the Yankees/Red Sox, have more of this fan. My opinion is largely shaped by my experiences of growing up in St. Charles and going to school at Miami University in Ohio where there a ton of kids from Chicago who fit this stereotype of a Cubs fan to a T. I am definitely not trying to say this represents all or even most Cubs fan, but I do believe we a decently sized segment that fits it. Again though, the tourists and yuppies do allow us to have a higher payroll and theoretically a higher chance of winning each year if that money is spent wisely. So it's not all a bad thing.

Don't quite get the stigma of being a yuppie and a Cubs fan, why it has become a bad thing. I was once a young urban professional who was a Cub fan. I am no longer that young and neither live in the city but am still a Cub fan. Am I now a better Cub fan because I am no longer a yuppie?

I also went to college and at the same time went to Cub games and drank beer too, was I less a fan then?

And if someone comes to Chicago after college and becomes a Cub fan, I have no problem with that.

I am still awaiting the answer to my question, bigfan.

And I would argue that (in the ballpark) the first faction ALWAYS outnumbers the second. That is not to say that there are no true Cub fans out there who know baseball. I just think that they are in the minority when it comes to fan attendance at the games.

I think there are more of the first faction than you think. Remember last years playoffs? Comments from players and fans was "The place was dead". Well, the place was dead because you had the second faction couldnt afford the tickets.

I'm completely fine with real fans being there, regardless of what demographic they are part. And I think you know what I'm referencing here, but I'll highlight a couple examples for ya:



Frank's right for the most part (in THIS statement ), and that's why I care, enigma. I don't know why it pisses me off, but it does - I've wasted 26 years of my life caring about this damned team and in my own sick and twisted mind, statements like Frank's illustrate that these idiots basically make a mockery of the real Cubs fans' suffering.

I had a great time in Wrigley the other night....these are the real fans...they are locals...it was not drunkfest...we were watching crazed Carlos stare at the umpire in the top of the first...it was laid back...

Went to the game on Friday for dirt, dirt cheap (I saw tickets online for a dollar). Was a good time all and all except for getting trounced double digits by the D-Backs.
