Ozzie: Figgins too costly for Sox
from cnnsi.com t & r
White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen doesn't concern himself with tampering rules or any of the red tape that keeps suits employed in the Major League Baseball offices. He deals with reality. So when asked Saturday about the reality of the Sox going after Los Angeles Angels leadoff hitter and free agent-to-be Chone Figgins this winter, Guillen spoke honestly. ''I don't think Figgins,'' Guillen said. ''To be honest with you, would we like to have players like him? [Bleep], everybody does. But this kid is going to cost you a lot of money. If we figure out this guy is going to solve our problem, then [chairman] Jerry [Reinsdorf] will take a shot because Jerry wants to win."

I think right now, Ozzie doesn't want to shoot his mouth off too much and run the risk of getting another phone call from MLB "Commissioner" Allan H. Selig's office for tampering. Right now, it's highly unlikely that the White Sox have the money to make a legitimate run at Anaheim's Chone Figgins as the possible new leadoff hitter for 2010 unless they say goodbye to the likes of Jermaine Dye, Octavio Dotel, Scott Podsednik, Bobby Jenks & even Paul Konerko. Anyone who thinks Figgins would play the outfield for the Sox is kidding themselves. If he sports the silver & black for the Sox as a free agent, he plays third base just like he does now for Anaheim and you shift Gordon Beckham to second base. There's NO CHANCE IN HELL that Beckham plays shortstop, especially because the Sox seem to think Alexei Ramirez will be even better than this year there. At the same time, Chris Getz & Jayson Nix then become possibly included in a trade package involving one of the above names.

Some of those guys you name-Dye, Dotel and probably Podsednik, will be gone. Konerko will be on the last year of his deal, coming off a good season. There might be a taker for him, now that teams would only be picking up 1 year and he's not coming off a year like he had in 2008. Jenks...there certainly will be interest, but do they trust Thornton to close?? Bottom line, is that with the bad claiming of Alex Rios and the trade for Peavy, there is a greatly diminished chance of this happening. Kenny blew it when he signed Rios.

The White Sox have $71 million slotted to 10 players, and have a few guys coming up for arbitration, including Jenks. I think it's likely that they will try and move Jenks for a few prospects.

They say listening is a skill, so is reading. I said that he CLAIMED Rios and TRADED for Peavy. Dumbass!

It would make sense if they believe that Thornton is ready to take on the closers duties. but is he? He had some opportunities and failed too often. I believe that with the way Rios performed after Kenny claimed him, that Jerry might be more reluctant to go spending much this winter. The attendance was down and he will probably use that as an excuse

Rather than having the part that you think supports your position, here is the entire section in question. It states that Kenny CLAIMED Rios, which he did. By claiming him (which was a terrible move, which I said at the time (Toronto Management is dancing in the streets over this) it was akin to Kenny signing him to the ridiculously high contract that he carries. Money wasted....Now, it makes it much tougher to go after much better players they could have used that money towards.
