Dotel Would Play For Mets Or Yankees
By Ben Nicholson-Smith [September 25 at 11:12am CST]
The White Sox told Octavio Dotel that he's not in their long-term plans when the righty approached the club about a contract extension last month, according to the Chicago Sun-Times. The 35-year-old reliever says he'd like to play in New York for the Yankees or, his preferred team, the Mets. Dotel has experience in New York; he began his MLB career as a starter with the Mets in 1999 and played a season with the Yankees in 2006.

This year Dotel has allowed 54 hits in 61.2 innings, walking 36 and striking out 74 for an ERA of 3.36. He projects as a Type A free agent, so teams will have to surrender a high draft pick to sign Dotel if the White Sox offer him arbitration. He's currently making $6MM in the second deal of a two-year contract.

2010 White Sox will have top-shelf starting pitching and a well-caliber bullpen

This was obvious when they traded for Pena.

He will probably be one of the better bullpen arms on the FA market...and I am not upset he won't be back.

He'll strike out the first two batters, get the third guy 0-2 and give up a home run to surrender a lead.

Dotel keeps teetering between type A and type B status. If he endes up a type A there is no way the Sox can offer arbitration because no one is going to give up a first or a second rounder(if their 1st pick is protected) to sign him. If he ends up a type B the team signing him will not surrender a pick and the Sox will receive a compensation pick. I'd like to see the Sox put him in everytime Miggy comes up in this series. That should ensure he ends up a type B free agent.

Dotel is a type b free agent. That means a team does not have to surrender a draft pick to sign him but if the Sox offer arbitration they will receive a supplemental draft pick (between the 1st and 2nd round). I think the Sox are safe to offer Dotel arbitration because a team (Mets, Yankees, Atlanta) will offer him a 2 yr deal.

For some reason Dotel qualified as a type A free agent. No way the Sox offer arbitration now. There are a lot of fucked up things in baseball but the free agent compensation system might top the list.

That's bizarre. Although if you just looked at Dotel's numbers, you wouldn't think he sucked.

But he did. Hard.
