Here is a snippet that was posted in one of my fantasy leagues:

Robbie Gould (CHI - K )
Robbie Gould is winning his battle to keep the starting kicking job in Chicago. [-]
Impact: He's facing off with Josh Huston, who draftniks thought was the top college kicker last season. Gould was consistent on short kicks last season and has bested Huston on long ones in camp.

Gould "besting" someone on long kicks? I think not!

Does anyone have more info about this?

Sun Times reported Gould hit a 50 and 55 yarder at Soldier Field yesterday while Huston missed at both distances. It looks like Gould will win the job. Huston should be kept on the practice squad and the Bears should be checking the waiver wire throughout the season.

It is only a problem the first half of the year. No one makes those kicks in Chicago in December.

John Mullin has reported several times that Gould has consistently made 47-50 yard kicks at training camp. Very surprising.....

...Of greater concern to me is that Maynard is only punting like once a week due to a groin injury, and the Bears have brought in only nominal competition for him.

Wan't it Wanstadt who was always saying "Dah, we practiced really well today." And we know how those practices translated to game situations...

Unless he somehow strengthened that leg of his in the off-season, I won't believe it until he produces for real.

Yeah, well, Wannstedt was offering an opinion on his team whereas field goal kicking statistics leave little room for interpretation.

Still, like you, I will remain skeptical until I see Gould's expanded range with my own eyes.

They signed him because of his strong leg.

This is what confuses me. The Bears touted his leg strength when they signed him, but a lot of his FG kicks looked really weak--and his kickoffs weren't particularly deep, either.

He has a strong leg but he doesn't have any accuracy. They signed him because of his strong leg.

That surprises me too. It looked to me that he didn't have enough leg in a lot of his misses. It wasn't like he was always missing wide, he just didn't get it there...

Hutson has had difficulty with the lower tees in the pros and he seems reserved that he will be a camp leg. I read this in the trib the other day.

He mentioned in the interview that the advice he got from Gould is to kick good in the games and he will get more looks from other teams. Gould was in camp with the Pats last year, released and then picked up by the Bears.

Something tells me(the way he kicked last year) this is going to be an issue for the Bears this year. There will be a game(s) where he will be called on to win the game and I just don't see him making any of those kicks unless they are 35 yards out.

Lol.....

Don't worry about it, Nas, even I'm wrong once in every (great) while! ;)
