Shawne Merriman & T.O. both are on the trade block. Should the Bears go after one or both ?? can't see it costing you more than a 4th round pick ?

TO is injured. I dont think Lovie could deal with him.

As for Merriman, interesting but DE isn't our issue right now - Wale/Anderson/Brown are doing a good job this year. If he was DT, sure.

He'd play DE in a 4-3 system though.

I think Merriman's still gonna cost you more than a fourth-rounder, or I think another team will at least give the Chargers more than that for him...

If it works out you have an excuse to let Ogunleye walk after the season. This is a total contract push year and he is not going to be nearly as effective once he signs that paper.

He had a poor year the year before his injury.

Everyone turns into Daniel Snyder when they play make-believe GM. Trade for them! Trade for everybody! Sign, trade, sign! How's that working out for the Redskins? And besides, 3-4 LB is not exactly equal to 4-3 DE, although it's closer than 4-3 OLB. Ask Aaron Kampman how similar the positions are.

I've read studies to the effect that the "contract year" phenomenon is statistically invalid.

I'd rather see them look at a WR who can go up and get the ball. Why they won't even give Matt Jones a sniff is beyond me. He's working out for the Bucs today.

 that's just the ownership I had in mind when I said that someone would give the Chargers more than just a fourth-rounder for Merriman

I agree with you on possibly taking a chance on Merriman, Nas, but I wonder how well, if at all, T.O. and Cutler would get along. Those are two potentially volatile personalities, and as soon as T.O. does his usual crybaby thing if he's not thrown the ball enough it could backfire - I wish I'd be able to judge this possibility on talent alone, but Owens brings all that baggage with him...

Why would you put Merriman at linebacker? Where would he play? He would be completely lost in coverage, so MLB is out. The defense is all about funnelling tackles to Briggs, who's doing a DPotY job at Will, so why change that? The Sam is about absorbing blocks and coverage duties; that's not what you bring in Merriman for. You're not going to switch to 3-4 in week 6, and you don't have the personnel to do it anyway.

That leaves DE in the 4-3, which you need to hope he can actually do. You can't just treat draft picks like pogs and trade them away for the hope that maybe someone that hasn't been playing all that well finds the magic again AND can learn a new position on the fly.

We all play fantasy GM around here. If there is a hole on the team and a guy that could fill the hole becomes available it's only natural to wonder what it would take to acquire that guy. Merriman had 12.5 sacks the year before his injury. If I'm not mistaken Richard Dent may have been the last Bears player to get 12.5 sacks. I guess that is an off year compared to the 17 sacks he had the year before but I'll take 39.5 sacks in 3 years everyday of the week. My guess is he could play OLB. He would improve the Bears defense right away. If T.O. were available it would instantly make the Bears receivers better and improve their offense. Why wouldn't you at least find out what it would take if you were a GM?

Saying "look at this anecdote" doesn't invalidate the long set of data.

ProFootballTalk.com's Mike Florio, who will be on 670 The SCORE's "Danny Mac Show" tomorrow, says even though he has been doing very little lately, the Buffalo Bills aren't about to deal Terrell Owens. Wishful thinking...

In an attempt to sell tickets they showed him the money.

so you want a guy who's believed in his own hype after some monster success, took PED to barry bonds himself up, now can't figure out how to play defense and gets hurt...and you want another guy who believes in his own hype, is a clutch pass-dropper, and pisses and moans about everything if he's not thrown to 30 times a game?

good luck with all that...
