Caught this little news bit from Detroit that I thought was worth mentioning:

Charles Rogers and Mike Williams are reportedly competing for the same roster spot.

Assuming one of them gets cut, and given the fact they’d be given a low or incentive-based contract from their next team, would you take a shot at one of these guys, see if they show something when given a 2nd chance?

They’ve both proven to be underachievers. That said, I’d gladly take a chance on either if the price is right. Unless some pinheaded GM offers decent money, you really have nothing to lose.

You have to think that they are competing for the same spot in the lineup, but maybe not the roster. I just can't see Detroit giving up on either of them.

The language I saw (from multiple sources) indicated that someone, likely Rogers, may very well get cut. It’s a contract issue, Hawk. If these guys had rookie baseball contracts, they’d let them take their lumps and give them as much time as possible. But with the #2 pick in an NFL draft, that eats a ton of cap space. It’s a financial decision moreso than a performance decision.

Wasn't Mike Williams their 1st round choice, just one year ago ? Why would they cut him that quickly ? I can see cutting Rogers with all the probems they've had, but cutting Williams this soon make no sense to me.

I know what you mean, and I agree, it does sound early. But their new coach, Marinelli, has a reputation as a real redass and is probably putting his foot down.

Also from the Detroit Free Press:

Williams, the 10th overall pick in 2005, arrived at last year's training camp overweight. He played in 14 regular-season games, but caught only one touchdown. He also was fined at various times by the team for being late to meetings and injury treatments.
