Sitting here wondering if anyone caught Anne Maxfield's latest awkward attempt to join in on a sports conversation. She asked the Idiot (not Dostoevsky's) and the Sycophant what the over/under was on whether Ryan O'Malley would go on the disabled list.

So utterly painful to listen to.

I was just about to post on this very point, but you beat me to it. If she's going to "talk sports with the guys", can someone there (Rock?) clue her in that there is not an over/under on a yes/no question? This is the second time I have heard her misuse this.

Women like Annie are the reason I don't like to watch sports with my girl. God bless her for trying to get involved in the conversations, but she's just out of her league. Too bad Julie's a chef now eh?

But that's the saddest part with Annie. This stuff isn't that hard to learn and she's been doing it for 2 years now. If she'd do a little research (do a google search on betting definitions) or pay attention to formulate an actual thought then she wouldn't say dumbass things like this. Separate your lips from North's sac for a minute and pay attention for once.

Whoa! A Julie Swieca reference! Haven't seen one of those in a while. On a somewhat related topic, isn't it a bit odd that since the departure of dear Julie, our two Chicago sports radio powerhouses don't have any female hosts or reporters in the field or update people or whatever? (Well, unless you count the aforementioned Annie, and I don't.) National TV is loaded with female anchors and sideline reporters--especially sideline reporters--and we have our share of women on the local TV sports news, too. Fischer and Sayers are always all over the place covering stuff and anchoring news on Comcast . . . what's with the Score and 'MVP? Too much of a dirty old man's club?

Neither does the Score...

Unfortunately, most of the radio business, especially talk radio is a boy's club. Most of my female teachers at Columbia have confirmed this through stories of their own battles with sexism. This is why in order to be a woman on sports radio, you better know what the hell you're talking about because you have more of an uphill battle.

Annie's case is obviously different because she has the luxury of being the wife of a radio big-shot, which means she gets paid to show up and add absolutely no insight to the show she's on. Like Hawkeye said, all she needs is to do some research and preparation. I think it's a slap in the face to women who really work their asses off to be respected in sports radio.

There are very few women talk show host in this country period. Yes, some women are DJ's and some read the news but I'd say 99 percent of all of the talk shows are hosted by men. Right or wrong the male audience is desired more by advertisors and that's the reason. Men just don't want to hear a women host a show--sports or otherwise. It's simply a business decision by the GM's.

So why so many on TV? Is what we're saying here that if we men can have a pleasant woman to LOOK AT* on television, we'll tolerate her "lack of sports knowledge," but if we just have to LISTEN to them talk sports on the radio without the benefit of actually being able to look at them, we don't want them? I'm just curious as to why women seem to have made such a bigger breakthrough in televised sports than in sports radio.

*Yes, I know that not all of us here would rate every single woman on TV in a sports capacity as drop-dead gorgeous, but in all honesty, there aren't a lot of plug-ugly ones that are too painful to look at, either.

Yes. That is the answer PC. They are hired for eye candy on TV. Plus lets be honest they are just reading the scores and playing sound bites on TV so you don't have to have a vast knowledge of sports to do that. Hell most of the male sports anchors on TV have no idea about sports. You just have to be pleasant to look at and have a clean voice.

I actually think Paula Farris knows her shit. It comes across on the Sunday show she does. But that chick for channel 2 has no clue on what she's covering.

Have you ever seen a 250 pound women doing sports on TV. That's the women most likely to know her sports shit. But obviously she'll never be hired. Right or wrong that's the answer.

This question is a valid one in almost all instances. However, it also screams out for a picture of Shelly Smith from ESPN. Anyone?

Shelly Smith must be the Albert Einstein of sports to keep her job.

Forgetting about all women and all sports and all media, this particular woman should know something about some sport. She doesn't. Her pretense of being a NASCAR, hockey, and last month a "Gay Games" fan is silly.

Somebody up above said it "ain't rocket science". Well, true, but there is something to it and way more than she can pick-up in a couple years. It's obvious she never thought sports before this job.

And this is a Domer! My sister and her friends came off that campus 25 years ago as football nuts and any one of them knows college football better, to this day, than I ever will. And could give you a pretty good history of every Domer who ever made the NFL. (They could also give a pretty good history of Hanna Storm and her football "experiences") Women can be soooo catty.

Annie was in the communications lab on Saturdays, I guess.

I'd agree with this Beardown. Paula seems to have her act together but I somewhate disagree with you on Megan Mawicke. She does have half a clue having been a top level athlete in college (was a tennis player at Indiana), but she gets lost sometimes in all the fuss of trying to slam together 10 minutes of sports into 3 minutes of show.

Is BlazingSize Terry Boers? It is completely unethical to hint at possessing some great inside information and not share it.

Boers does this on a regular basis and it drives me crazy.

Blazing, feel free to share with impunity by simply prefacing your remarks with "Allegedly," or "In my opinion."

Dolphin and Stoneroses,

These girls I know are probably more jealous of Storm than anything else, and never gave up details about anything. It was always just bitterly alleged that she was overly involved with the teams. I don't know where she's from, but in college they mocked her as "Hanna from Atlanta" because she presented herself as a southern belle and used a thick accent. Either she put it on or they trained it out of her for TV.

Don't really have more than that. My sister isn't a real graphic person and Hanna doesn't come up much any more like she did during the Bulls runs. Sorry to disappoint. Maybe Annie knows.

This does not directly answer the question at hand, but for what it's worth, Hannah Storm is the daughter of Mike Storen (she changed Storen to Storm, apparently), who was the commissioner of the old American Basketball Association in the 1970's. Therfore, through her father, she must have had a lot of inside info and contacts in the basketball world. What she did with that info and those contacts, I couldn't say!

She changed her 'stage' name to Storm after working at a heavy metal station after college. Not that it changes all of the above facts.,...
