Kenny! Kenny! Kenny!

First, why do Sox fans think this is Kenny's doing? Reinsdorf has been signing old players at the end of their careers while Kenny was trying to make it as a player? Carlton, Seaver, Raines, Bell and guys that are just at the end of their careers, willing to take anything to play. Like, Bo Jackson who wasnt old, but was amazing when healthy and came back at the end for a 1 1/2 years with the Sox. (Unless you ask Hawk, who thinks Bo played for 7 years and hit 200 giant HR's for the Sox). The list of guys goes on and on.

Second, I agree with this! I think it is a great way to run your franchise "IF" you are working on limite Funds. Which the White Sox are NOT working on! They claim they are. They are not a top 5 spending team, but they are top half! but cry like they are bottom 5?

Third, this is equivalant to me dropping a hundo on snake eyes every time. If I won, I might look like a genius, sure I have $3000 in my pocket, but I know it was just luck. (and this is where Frank C gets mad)

Seaver had pretty good seasons in 84 and 85 - I would settle for that type of production from our #4 or #5 starter today.

The Sox position players are fairly young so they are going with a veteran bench (hopefully Blanco will be next). Why is that so hard to figure out?? Oh, you can't call Reinsdorf cheap if you look at it that way. Carry on.

I see Big Fan's hard-on for the Sox continues on this Thanksgiving day, along with the suckage of the Detroit Lions and the overcooking of my mother's turkey.

This is typical White Sox bullshit.....just like the pile of crap Kenny threw on the field for Opening Day of 2009...this is pathetic...the usual Catch 22...Reinsdorf and Kenny put chumps on the club during the Winter...SEASON TICKETS SALES DECREASE....The team gets off to a boring start in the laughable A.L. Central...potential ticket buyers figure they are not going out to freeze their asses off in April and May despite the comical efforts of HAWKEROO to stir up interest...July rolls around and Kenny says he can't improve the team because the fans did not show up to watch his botched up abortion play in April, May and June......this record is always playing on the White Sox jukebox.

Big Fan, the only time Reinsdorf went out on a "financial" limb to spend money to make money was with Albert "Joey" Belle and even then both parties had an out clause after 2 years.

I'm struggling with BigFan's list here. Tom Seaver gave you two pretty good years. Steve Carlton had da fire and da passion during his ten starts for us (seriously, though, he was an August signing because our pitching staff was weak and he was more productive than most expected). Tim Raines - look, I hated to see Barry Jones traded, but Tim Raines did well enough to justify that trade, and Jones ate himself out of the league in a couple of years. I will give you George Bell, simply because he was a pain in the ass and hit way below average while here.

Vizquel - if he is limited to starting eight games and coming in as a defensive replacement in 12 more or so, I don't have a big problem with this. If injury forces him to be an everyday player, we're fucked. Jones is the signing that concerns me - as his numbers have sucked of late.

And I bet you just can't wait to get a down payment down for 4 full season tickets......

These moves are pure bullshit.....Wing and a Prayer crap...hardly a way to endear a franchise to the cutomers....

Teahen is a strikeout-double play machine...Vizquel is 43 fucking years old..and Jones appears to be a washed up STIFF.

You guys are morons. Visquel is going to be a backup, and my guess is he may be with the Sox for the next few years in the coaching aspect. Its not long before Joey Cora becomes an MLB manager, and Vizquel would likely make a good bench/base coach.

Jones is only 32 (33 in April) and for $500K, anything you get out of him is worth it.

We don't buy tickets to marvel at future manager Joey Cora and future bench coach Omar Vizquel.

Well I haven't bought tickets solely to see Nick Swisher, Juan Uribe, Pablo Ozuna, or Neal Cotts either, but they all have been integral parts of getting the Sox into the playoffs at some point.

Bob, I'm going to quote my own post:

I'm not excited about Omar Fucking Vizquel. But why should anyone be? He's a backup, who should see the most limited of roles this year.
Jones - I'm not sure he could win an everyday spot at DH - but I don't think it would hurt to kick the tires.

I don't understand the big deal here; we're arguing over $500K backups who happen to be older.

If this thread was started in March about the opening day roster, then we can bitch about Kenny's roster as a whole.

Maybe we can sign Kenny Lofton to play center? How about Gary Sheffield as DH he's only 41 years old. Since Kenny likes older pitchers there's always Randy Johnson 46, John Smoltz 42, Billy Wagner 38 and how about a pitcher with a injury Ben Sheets.

Middle of the season the Sox could have an Old Timers game at no charge.

Rios and Peavy are big and risky long-term commitments. It must suck to be wrong so often. Please change the first name of your moniker to a gerund to be honest with us.

My mistake.....I should have qualified it....When does Reinsdorf go balls out for big time free agents...and OK, if it doesn't make financial sense, why doesn't he have a top notch player development system?

THEY HAD BETTER GO OUT AND FIND A LEAD OFF HITTER, A RELIEF PITCHER WHO IS NOT NAMED LINEBRINK AND A GENUINE MAJOR LEAGUE OUTFIELDER...PURE AND SIMPLE......AND IT APPEARS KENNY ISN'T BUYING INTO PODS' CAREER YEAR AND OFFERING HIM A HUGE DEAL WHICH IS SMART....RIGHT NOW THEIR OFF SEASON MOVES ARE LIKE SOME NEIGHBOR GOING THROUGH YOUR GARBAGE CAN OUT BACK.

Why not, since their farm system has been pathetic for about 10 years!!!!!

Freddie Garcia as #5 starter is proof enough.

But if you want to continue the White Sox Paranoia Tradition thats OK too.

I believe (not 100% sure about this) the 2005 White Sox only had four position players that came up through the farm system, and only two of them were full-time starters (Aaron Rowand, Joe Crede). There was one pitcher in the starting rotation (Mark Buehrle) and one in the bullpen (Brandon McCarthy). Everyone else—6 players on the field, 4 starters—developed in other systems.

Your prospects don't have to spend much or any time in the majors to be valuable. Trading prospects or young players brought the Sox some key components to that team: Freddy Garcia, Damaso Marte and Carl Everett. Not whiffing on or overcommitting to free agents makes one hell of a difference, too: Jermaine Dye, Pablo Ozuna, Orlando Hernandez, Dustin Hermanson, Cliff Politte, Bobby Jenks (waiver signing), A.J. Pierzynski and Tadahito Iguchi.

Yeah, and the very next sentence, you insult them. CSFMB Guy is right. This is just you pointing at anything and everything White Sox and going, "ha ha ha look at what they are doing now!"

I wonder if you do that to the only World Series banner raised in this town in the last 90 years.

I doubt Reinsdorf is directing this. Williams is simply making moves to improve the bench, and neither Vizquel or Jones are expected to play anything beyond backup roles.

Exactly. By signing the likes of Omar Vizquel & Andruw Jones for bargain-basement prices by MLB standards, you don't exactly expect a great deal of production, but these are two veterans that can help these guys improve a bench that sucked last year. Ramon Castro? Corky Miller? Wilson Betemit? Are you kidding me? With Vizquel now on board, Brent Lillibridge & Jayson Nix are definitely on notice and I wouldn't be shocked if one or both of those guys don't make the 2010 Opening Day roster.

You are correct. I will agree Reinsdorf did not tell Kenny to go and offer Jones $500K, but it is structured just like Jerry has structured many deals over the years, before Kenny got there, thus didnt need the vast interaction ot structure a 1 year deal.

I will now wait to see how this comment is ripping the White Sox, which Frank will explain to everyone

In the case of Jones though, they signed him to an extremely cheap deal with incentives should he perform well. I don't think this deal is much different than what any other team would do, teams aren't handing out rich contracts to guys coming off a .215 batting average.

What if we could get JD back for $2 million, I would take that over Jones for $500,000 and from what I heard today on Sporting News Radio from some of their basbeall experts, a number of free agents could be had in the $2-3$ mill range this year.
Very Colon like in this deal (and both guys fat!), had to strike on this one right away and didn't wait to see what else we could get for the same dollars.

Valid point, unless the White Sox had Jones higher on their board than other players in the price range that they were willing to spend for his role.

I did not read any of the posts preceding mine. These are both great signings. Low risk, great reward. The only damaging part would be depending on either of these guys and pegging money for them you could use on others. The Sox should also bring back Dye at DH.
