I dont think so. Id say he's a #2. Gary Payton in his prime is probably his celing.

He may be a top 20 NBA player but never a top 10.

Maybe its the position....Its hard to be a PG and be "The Guy"

Was Stockton a #1? He's a hall of famer. Maybe not a #1 though.

The only PG who starred on Championship teams were Magic and Isiah....maybe im forgetting some but its rare anyway.

So is he or isnt he?

What say you?

Just remember that Derrick Rose is 21 years old. If he was a football player he'd be preparing for a bowl game.

He's had an absolutely dreadful coach and Rose is too nice of a guy to get him fired after year one like he should have. He's not featured at all.

This is rock bottom for Rose. Once Vinny gets fired, and most of the losers around him are gone or benched he's going to finally take control of this team.

The reason that he may never win a title is because Lebron James is on his way to starting his reign of terror on the NBA. It may not happen this year but Lebron is going to take over very soon especially since Kobe is starting to show signs of decreased ability.

HE JUST NEEDS SOME WR'S AND AN OFFENSIVE LINE!

I get what you are doing, but it's complete bullshit. Even you, Rick, should be able to tell that Rose has better WRs and a better o-line than Cutler.

Back to the drawing board.

In the NBA guys below 21 regularly dominate. I give no creedence to his age as an argument

This is true. But even with a sub par coach or supporting cast, shouldnt we already have seen some if not many flashes of the impending brilliance. Where has it been?

Couldnt agree more. But he can be a superstar and not win a title, obviously.

I guess I was expecting Chris Paulish type play. So far he's not even Deron Williams.

If Rose were drafted by Phoenix or Denver, does anyone think his development would be different? In a wide open style offense, I think Rose would excel. But we really won't know until VDN is canned.

I think Rose has shown flashes of brilliance. The playoffs against Boston last year were signs of the talent that is lying dormant within Rose. Maybe the right coach will be able to bring it out - only time will tell.

Rose will never be an alpha dog on a contending NBA squad. I think he could evolve into a great second fiddle teamed with a dominate big man though.

They certainly can but we can't make a determination yet. Most of those players were featured from day one. Rose still defers to John Salmons! Terrible coaching.

The playoffs last year showed flashes of brilliance. The next coach is going to feature Rose unless we get Wade/Lebron/Melo. It's hard to look brilliant when Salmons needs to get his shots.

I agree. However, this team needs to be built around Rose. It's still roughly the same team since before he was drafted.

I still think he can become a player like Chris Paul but there is a lot of house cleaning that needs to take place.

Right, this is key. This team is real bad. Yes the coaching stinks, and yes they have had some injuries... but the team just really doesn't have good players on it. The organization is playing for 2010, and unfortunately that means another year of BS around Derrick. It's tough for him to develop when doesn't have talent around him... and a really bad coach who doesn't know how to use him.

It has good players. The problem is that John Salmons seems to believe that he's important. If they got rid of Vinny and Salmons and made it clear that the offense runs through Rose they'd be instantly better.

He is not featured. It's not about development. It's about getting the ball in his hands on every possession. I can't stand it when Salmons just goes one on one while Rose watches. That should never happen.

Won't disagree with that. But all in all, how many wins would a new coach add? Considering there aren't many top of the line guys available, my guess is a better coach will add somewhere in the arena of 5-7 or so wins.

To me, that means the team still sucks.

Well, asking "will he be" is different than "can he be." It depends on how the team is built around him.

Also, it depends on what you consider championship caliber. Not all championship caliber teams (say, 58+ wins) actually make it to the finals.
