pizza_Place: I'm a Gelsosomo's guy.
I was up to about 245 at one point, got down to 187 in about 8 months. Cut out carbonated beverages, sodium and fast food and hit the treadmill. Ideally I would like to get back down to 200 so I need to lose 20 to 23 pounds.

The highest I've ever been was 230, around August of 2006....About a year ago I was down to 197, the lowest I've been since early 20's...My perfect range is 195-205.

Considering I am 5 11 and you are 6'2, I guess I should shoot a little lower than 200 - lol.

I know I won't be able to maintain anything under than 200 because I like my snacks a little too much.

I'm 220-230ish (haven't been on a scale in ages), and pretty vertically challenged. I'd like to get down to anywhere between 175-180. I had planned on joining a gym after the holidays, so I should definetly give this a legitimate effort.

I'll do it. It will give me extra incentive to try out the new exercise regimen I've devised. Will be starting next week but one or two workouts will have a negligible effect on my current weight.

If I win the stick I'll present it to my girlfriend's old man as an epic reverse dowry maneuver.

I would be in for this - I was dieting hard core for about 6 weeks - no carbs - but last week and a half I've been cheating. You cut carbs and you will lose weight very quickly; however, once you start eating bad carbs again in pre-dieting form you will gain it back rather quick.

That being said, I would be down. I have my physical strength test for the CFD on Jan. 5th so I'm going back on later this week to hopefully drop about 15 before that date.

I'm like 5'9 about 240 right now.

don't stop eating carbs, for the love of whatever you believe in. it is such a dumbass way to lose weight.

don't think about losing weight fast, think about gaining it back fast. that's what a no-carb diet will do (as CSF just said).

1. quit drinking
2. lighter meals
3. eat more often (but not right before bed)
4. exercise

that's really all you need to do. if you can't do 1 or more things on that list, then you won't lose weight the right way and you'll probably cause more health problems down the road for yourself.

W_Z, I've heard conflicting reports on what effect drinking (or not drinking) has on weight loss and I'm interested to hear your take, especially if you can relate some anecdotal evidence.

if you're going to have a beer or two, it's not going to hurt. but when i say drinking i'm talking like, a six pack friday, saturday, and sunday, or a whole bottle of wine in an evening. the problem, too, with drinking, is that it leads to *more eating* as well...as you can see, in many of the drink-related threads...

it certainly doesn't help you *lose* weight. but a beer or a glass of wine isn't going to hurt you too bad.

but what's the fun in that?

I wanted some IB-like numbers and graphs to support this.

I would be down for doing this. I'm around 200 when I should be around 180-185. Its not alot, but its easy to keep putting it off. A little competition will help me kick it in the ass and get it taken care of.

There should be a weight gain challenge. Me and Doug could battle head-to-head.

I'm 5'9 and 220-225 and most comfy at 190-200.

I'm someone that fluctuates weight very rapidly (5-15 pounds in a month is not uncommon), so YMMV, but nothing has a larger effect on weight loss IMO than cutting out alcohol consumption. You can still have an occasional drink and lose weight, but it means you need to cut back on more food than you'd probably want to. I'd try to go cold turkey (but not Wild Turkey) for at least a month, and if you see a big result, maybe cheat a little bit thereafter for a week or so as a reward.

Just me $.02

If you go back to eating junk and not exercising, you will gain back weight fast after any type of diet. There are several effective ways to lose weight, but none of them will last if you fall back into bad habits.

that's true but in the case of the no-carb diet; once you start eating things like bread and cereal on a daily basis, it sends a shock to your system.

you don't need to deny yourself the finer things, you just have to eat smaller portions of them. that's all dieting really should be.

a lot of people get caught up in eating "healthier" things that are absolute garbage. like they'll eat salad, but douse it in dressing (the worst part of what you're eating); or have soup 3-4 times a week. soup is loaded with sodium, which is also bad for you in that amount of consumption. or people will eat fat-free or sugar free cookies but they'll eat a whole box of them. or buy baked or low fat chips and still eat 5 hand fulls.

really dieting is about portioning rather than denial of food.

but that's why exercise is so important. if you build that into your daily routine, and you go off your diet after you've lost the weight--at least your metabolism is at a higher rate, and you can have some fun if you keep it moderate. it all depends on you. once you raise your metabolism level your body will be able to burn everything off a lot quicker. guys who are in their 30's and pushing 200+ lbs are gonna have to take it a lot slower, obviously. i agree with quitting drinking cold turkey for a while and see what the results are.

I think it was mentioned... but we would realistically start this in January after we all get even fatter over Christmas, right?

Ok, so initial weigh-in would be sometime between Dec 31st and Jan 2nd
then? Does this sound reasonable for those going out and enjoying New
Years?

Totally understand. Easier to give people a little window. Some of us aren't
doing anything for New Years while others will be livin' it up. Jan 2nd should
give you a better idea of an actual weight if you let'er rip over New Years.

I suggested Mon Jan. 4th so folks would have the weekend to do whatever after New Years and start fresh on a Monday. But I am good with whatever the group wants. . . of course if you guys choose to do a live weigh in and such, then I will have to be out because I ain't driving 9 hours for a weigh in

This makes sense as well. We'll see what Crosscheck wants to do since this was kind of his
deal to begin with. So far sounds like we have a decent sized group willing to give it a shot.
